  1. Greetings Fish Friends! Hurricane Irene is right around the corner. Make sure your tanks are prepared for possible power outages. If you don't have a generator, pick up some battery operated air pumps either here or at a sporting goods store (in fishing area for keeping live bait). Make sure you have extra batteries available for long term power outages. Keep some bags of ice in the freezer in case the aquarium temp gets too warm you can float them to help slowly cool your tank. Bring in any empty water containers and pick fill up with some of our pre-mixed salt water and fresh water for emergency water changes. If you have a generator make sure you have plenty of gas available and some extra long extension cords. We hope that everyone fairs well through this storm, please call us if you have any questions. What's New I did an extensive walk around the store and I am shocked to still see so many beautiful coral colonies still here! We have a huge selection of corals so if you are fairly new to keeping corals, we can work with you and help you in your next coral purchase. If you have been keeping corals for a while, we can also help get you to try out a different type of coral that you don't already have. Sometimes it is hard to picture what a coral might look like in a more natural environment other than on coral racks so don't hesitate to ask us for help or our opinions. Currently in stock are various Acropora colonies and frags, Acanthastrea colonies and frags, Duncan/Whisker polyps, Aussie Scolymias, various Chalice frags, Aussie War Coral frags, various ORA coral frags, many types of Montipora colonies and frags, a huge selection of Mushrooms and Zoanthids, Australomussas, Blastomussas, Elegance, Lobophyllias, Cynarinas, Trachyphyllias, Wellsophyllias, Fungias and Heliofungias, Cyphastrea frags, Carnations, Favia and Maze Brain colonies and frags, a nice selection of Leathers, Frogspawns, Torches and Hammers, Gonioporas, Hydnophoras, Xenia, Pipe Organs, Birds Nest colonies and frags, Pavona, Pocillopora, Sea Fans and Sun Corals. Although the pistol shrimp has poor eyesight he is a great digger, so the shrimp will dig a burrow in the substrate while the goby keeps his eyes peeled for predators. When a threat comes near the pistol shrimp is ready with his antenna touching the goby's tail fin, with one flick of the goby's tail, both the goby and the shrimp dive deep into their tunnel for safety. The goby also does the hunting for the couple bringing food back to the burrow. If you are interested in a pair for your small or large tank, we have a few shrimp and goby pairs available. There are a couple Yellow Watchman Gobies paired with Tiger Pistols as well as a Randall's Goby with a Tiger Pistol. Goby and pistol pairs are also a great addition to the lower portion of your tank and are great at sand sifting.

No Warranty. Did You Know? Did you know that live food may not be a good diet for your fish? For those of you with large carnivores, I know it's fun to throw in a few goldfish or rosy reds for your big fish to gobble up but there may be consequences. Large carnivores can become spoiled on these live foods and refuse to eat anything else. Since fresh water feeder fish don't have the correct dietary balance of nutrition, and often carry disease, this is an overall poor food choice to begin with. When a fish is fed only feeder fish you can expect to see a dramatic fading in their color and a huge decline in their immune system. If you have this problem, don't worry it may not be too late. There are feeding prongs, tempting foods and appetite stimulants you can try to use to train your fish to eat prepared foods again. For those of you feeding brine shrimp every day, guess what, it's like feeding your kids candy for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Yeah they love it but they aren't getting much out of it. Especially if you are feeding live brine, beware, once the shrimp are old enough to reproduce there is a good chance that they are carrying parasites like our old friend Ich (cryptocaryon). In this case I would recommend trying one of the frozen brine shrimp products that are supplemented with vitamins. For those of you with delicate reef fish like butterflies and angelfish it is important that they are getting certain things in their diet, to maintain optimal health try the foods that are formulated specifically for them. Next time you stop by ask a sales person to recommend an appropriate diet for your specific fish. All our frozen foods are buy 3 get the 4th free! A great time to try out a new diet for your fishes!
  3. Greetings Fish Friends! Yay for beautiful weather! We hope everyone has been enjoying this break from the heat and humidity. We have had a great week here and hope to spread out the greatness! Lots of beautiful fish and corals to select from for all aquarium types. While you are out cruising with the windows down and the wind in your face, take a pit-stop at your favorite fish store and let us help you select your next coral, fish or invert! We are also clearing out some inventory so this is a great opportunity to upgrade your skimmer, add some LED lighting or replace a main system pump. Check out our "What's On Sale" section for more information. Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing you this weekend! What's New Have you been pondering how to fill in that low lit area in your tank? Or the area that gets too much or not enough current? Well ponder no more! We have a huge selection of corals to fill in any of those gaps in your tank. Beautiful Blastomussa corals are a perfect fit under indirect or lower lighting and a low to moderate flow rate. Birds Nest coral love high light and a high flow rate and grow beautifully in many different reef systems. Montipora are a very hardy coral that just about adapts to any aquarium conditions. Bubble corals are also a great filler for a lower lit and flow rate area and they are quite unique and pretty. If you’re looking for some “flowy” corals, check out the Torch, Hammer and Frogspawn colonies we have. They are very easy to care for, require a moderate to high light and a moderate flow rate. Our LPS display at the end of our last coral isle displays these corals beautifully. Looking for more unique and rare corals? We have a selection of Acanthastrea frags and small colonies, some Chalice frags, SPS frags among others. So remember, you can almost always find a coral that will thrive in a certain spot in your aquarium, and we are here to help you locate it! For a sneak peek at what’s currently available, click here! If you missed it last week, we still have a great selection available of Ricordea polyps! We have brought these in previously and they have been a big hit. They come in a variety of colors, mainly yellows, golds, blues, greens and oranges. The single polyps are sold individually so you can select your preferred colors and we even have some small rocks made up of a variety of the colors as well. We have a multi-purchase price-break for those of you who want a variety of colors too! Ricordea prefer a low to moderate lighting and a low flow rate. Take care when acclimating them to an aquarium with metal halides, they should be placed very low in the aquarium and even could benefit from the indirect lighting. Otherwise they adapt quite well under most lighting. They are also great for mix-n-matching the colors and creating a colorful mushroom garden in an area of your tank. Our newest fish and invert arrivals this week include Royal Grammas, Midas Blennies, Lawnmower Blennies, Starry Blennies, Klein's Butterflies, Red Scooter Dragonets, Flame Cardinals, Azure Damsels, Clown Gobies - Greens and Yellows, Helfrichi Firefish, Hi Fin Banded Gobies, Pearly Jawfish, Watchman Gobies, Orange Spotted Sleeper Gobies (Diamond Watchmans), Gold Head Sleeper Gobies, Randall's Shrimp Gobies, Fuzzy Dwarf Lion, Bicolor Dottyback, Purple Dottyback, Diadema Dottyback, Two Bar Spinefoot Rabbitfish, Naso Tang (med), Blonde Naso Tang - male (med), Powder Blue Tang (med), Bluestreak Cleaner Wrasse, Yellow Coris Wrasse, Pinstriped (Hoeven's) Melanurus Wrasse, Vermiculate Leopard Wrasse – male, Six Line Wrasse, Christmas Wrasse (Fiji), Bumble Bee Snails, Fighting Conchs, Skunk Cleaner Shrimp, Peppermint Shrimp, Randall's Pistol Shrimp and Sand Sifting Starfish. Check out our online newsletter for some used equipment now at reduced prices! Did You Know? Did you know that almost all corals, and some invertebrates such as anemones, require higher intensity lighting than just regular fluorescent bulbs? A good rule of thumb to lighting is to have about 3-5 watts of light per gallon. You can definitely have more light to be able to keep SPS corals and clams, but for a wide range of soft and stony corals and most anemones, 3-5 watts per gallon should be fine. A few different types of lighting that you can use to keep live corals are PC’s (Power Compacts), VHO’s (Very High Output) and Metal Halides which includes a mogul base (screw-in) and/or HQI (double-ended) bulbs. There are many ways to upgrade your lighting. Some ways include buying a lighting unit containing the appropriate lights such as a Halide unit or a PC unit, or buying a retro kit and installing the lighting yourself into a canopy or an old light strip. The Marine Scene has a wide variety of different kinds of lighting units and retro units including PC’s, VHO’s and Metal Halides so please come by to get more information and choose the appropriate one for your tank. There are even Lunar lights you can also add to your tank so you can view all the night activity.

False Percula Clowns are actually Ocellaris yet are commonly known as the False Percula because they look almost identical to the True Percula Clownfish. As juveniles, the Ocellaris and the Percula look very similar with orange bodies marked with white bands outlined in black. The False or Ocellaris tends to be the more popular among many aquarists due to their brilliant orange and white colorations. The True or Percula clowns grow to have a paler orange and the black outline of the white bands gets thicker almost taking over the entire midsection of the clown. True Perculas are more prized for the amount of black they have on them along with the pattern of their stripes as they can have quite distinctive patterns with names such as Picasso and Snowflake. You can also tell the difference if you have the patience enough to count the dorsal spines as the False or Ocellaris has 11 spines and the True or Percula has only 10. So next time you are walking around the store wondering why some are called False and some True, you will know the answer. Do you know which kind of clownfish you have? Write us a review! We thank all of you who have taken a few extra minutes and written us a review! And for those of you who are unaware, we launched a new advertising program using www.superpages.com and anyone that would like to give us kudos, please do so! Just enter our business name and city, (Marine Scene, Herndon VA), then click on "write a review". We appreciate your support and help with getting the word out! Find us on Facebook

The reason behind this is there are lots of fish species out there that are not appropriate to keep in captivity; some get way too large, lots are endangered, most will not eat prepared foods or have a specific diet which can be very hard to provide in captivity, and lots more reasons. We do still carry a very wide selection of fish and just because you don't see it here, does not mean we don't stock it. Sometimes we don't stock a certain fish because we don't sell them often enough. If you are looking for a specific fish species we might be able to order it for you. The Marine Scene also has a store wish list for those items you do not see here very often or that end up selling out of before you get here. You can even check on our website for the fish we have stocked at least once here and place a request to get a particular fish (or any other item) in stock for you.
  6. We stock the 12"x12" and the 4"x8" Poly Filters
  7. We do carry the Formalin and have 6 bottles available if you still are in need. I hope your fishes are getting better! Melissa

We are just discontinuing stocking these bulbs so if in the future you need a replacement, we can always reorder them for you! (while supplies last) Did You Know? Did you know that there are a lot of corals, fish and invertebrates that are nocturnal or spend more time out in the dark? We carry a variety of very bright corals that usually are found in deep waters or in caves so they don't normally see daylight. These corals can adapt with some help and daily target feedings. Some of these corals include the beautiful Orange and Black Sun Corals, Yellow and Red Sea Fingers, Orange, Yellow and Red Sponges, and many more. We have had great luck keeping these corals healthy and thriving using an assortment of coral foods such as DT's Live Phytoplankton, Oyster Eggs, CyclopEeze frozen bars, Golden Pearls and a few others. Some of the fish that prefer the dark but can adapt to brighter environments are Eels, Puffers, Cardinals and some others. You can usually tell if a fish prefers the dark because they have larger eyes than most yet in the case of the Eels, they don't see well to begin with so they rely on other senses such as smell and movement. Some invertebrates that you might have in your tank and don't see very active during your light hours are the Serpent and Sand Sifting Stars, Fire and Peppermint Shrimp, Cowries and other snails, Pom Pom Crabs, Lobsters and many others so just because you can't see them out all the time, doesn't mean they don't come out. Some natural ways to see what goes on in your tank at night are to add some Moon or Lunar Lights to your existing lights. Moon and Lunar lights are LED's that are easily added to just about any lighting unit and create a beautiful glow to your tank at night! Used Equipment for sale: USED 90 Gallon complete setup in good condition for $1100. Cherry cabinetry, sump system, protein skimmer, RO/DI unit, PC lighting in canopy, and return pump. Did you know that trace elements are naturally occurring elements found in varying quantities in seawater? They are the elements that fish, corals and invertebrates use to form their skeleton, tissue, and to help maintain coloration and health. Some of the trace elements are rapidly utilized by the corals and need to be replenished on a regular basis. Any trace element that is naturally occurring in the ocean should be present in a captive saltwater tank. Depending on the quantity and type of animals in the aquarium, different trace elements become more or less important. The Marine Scene suggests that a reef tank be dosed with Calcium, Magnesium, Strontium and Molybdenum, and Iodine. Tanks with lots of macroalgaes should be dosed with Iron, Bromide, and Iodide. Fish only tanks should be dosed with all elements, but perhaps to a lesser degree. There are numerous test kits for the hobbyist to use which help to identify the particular needs of a given tank. The Marine Scene carries all the trace elements that saltwater aquariums need as well as the test kits to make sure they are at their proper levels. Check out Brightwell Aquatics for a great selection of trace elements, buffers and vitamins that your aquarium needs. If you have any questions about your tanks personal needs, please feel free to stop by the store and speak with a sales associate. Is your aquarium being dosed properly? Stop in and pick up any of our dry or powder supplements which are on sale for 15% off! Used Equipment for sale: USED 90 Gallon complete setup in good condition for $1100. 10. The tank is looking great Sam! Sorry to hear about the Barnacle Blenny, we did get in more this week. And so happy to hear the Yellow Assessor is doing well, they are really cool fish. Those Green Banded Gobies are a bit secretive at first but with time, they'll be "scooting" all over the tank, we had one in our 260 display that we would see on occasion then had to rescue it from the overflow box. Decided to keep it in a smaller tank so it would be seen more often Keep up the nice work and continue posting pictures! ~Melissa

Did you know that acclimating your new livestock is essential to their survival? Just floating the bag on your tank's surface won't cut it. In order to properly acclimate all livestock, try drip acclimation. Adding water from your aquarium to the water the critters are in will gradually and safely adjust the temperature, pH, salinity and overall water quality to match your aquariums. This way your new livestock won't be stressed or shocked when introduced into their new home. You can use airline tubing to create the drip by tying a knot in the end of it and adjusting the tightness of the knot to obtain about 3 drops per second. Once the volume in the container doubles, your livestock purchase can be removed and placed carefully in the aquarium. There is also what I call the shot glass procedure. No, you aren't going to get your fishes drunk. After floating the bag in your aquarium water with the lights out, add approximately an ounce, or shot glass, of aquarium water into the bag. Do this about every minute until the volume in the bag doubles then carefully remove the livestock item and place it carefully in the aquarium. Also make sure that you are not dumping the store water back into your aquarium. Keep in mind that many places will use medication in their fish only systems and you don't want to add anything that may potentially harm your critters. It is best to just dump that water down a drain. For more information on the drip acclimation and shot glass procedures ask any Marine Scene employee for a handout.
  12. Happy Friday Fishy Friends! Summer is here, yet it feels like it has been summer for a couple months now. We hope everyone has had a nice week and stayed cool and dry. Looking forward to a great weekend ahead of us and we hope to see many of you, so stop on by! Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing you this weekend! What's New We have implemented a discount scheme for any multiple PC bulb purchases; purchase one PC bulb at regular price, two at 10% off, three at 15% off and four or more get 20% off each bulb! We are working on spreading the savings onto you, our customers! More on the way from Hanna Instruments! New Hanna Calcium Checkers are nearly on their way and we're accepting pre-orders for these highly anticipated new testers. Give your calcium tests the reliability of a digital tester! These kits will sell for $55.99, just like the rest of the Checker line. If you pre-order now, get 10% off for a final retail price of $50.39! We currently have Alkalinity Checkers as well as Low Range Phosphate (0.0-2.5ppm) and ultra Low Range Phosphorus Checkers (0-0.61ppm) in stock along with additional reagents. The Low Range Phosphate kit would be the one most of us would use. The Low Range Phosphorus kit would be great for those keeping a very low nutrient system or anyone regularly keeping Phosphates under 0.61ppm - the kit's highest reading. All three of these Checker models are in stock TODAY and available for $55.99. If you're looking for a better way to test your Phosphates, look no further than our new Hanna high- and low-range Phosphate colorimeters. A colorimeter uses LED and a digital sensor to read the color-change for you! We are swimming with a great assortment of fish this week! Finally back in our tanks are Yellow Coris Wrasse! These bright fish are a great addition to a community reef system as they are extremely beneficial and will eat fireworms, pyramidellid snails and flatworms keeping your corals and clams protected. They may also eat some other more desirable crustaceans like smaller shrimp and tube worms and possibly even parasites off other tank mates. Also back in stock is a beautiful Harlequin Tusk. This is a great addition to a fish only system as the Harlequin will eat some coral as well as many types of crustaceans in a reef system. Looking for a bright addition to your fish only system? I recommend the Harlequin Tusk for that task! Did you know that all clownfish are born unsexed with no stripes and then undergo transformation into juvenile males with the beginning signs of adult coloration? The juvenile clowns are non- reproductive until they become adult males or females. A juvenile clown only becomes a mature adult male or female if they are the senior fish in the group or pairing. The more aggressive, dominant of the clowns will then transform into a female and the less aggressive, less dominant clown will become the adult male. The male-to-female switch is called protandrous hermaphroditism. The female is the largest and assumes the role of the protector, charging at trespassers that infringe upon her territory (including the aquarists hands and cleaning devices). Keeping only one or two clownfish in an aquarium is best. If you have one already, it has most likely become a mature, adult female and if it is quite large, it will most likely accept a small male as her mate. Purchasing two juvenile male clowns will result in one becoming the dominant female and the other the dominant male. In the wild, non-reproductive juvenile clownfish seek a new home in the tentacles of a host anemone. If the juvenile attempts to settle into a sea anemone already occupied by other clownfish, the newcomer is either chased away, or if there is a vacancy, it takes a position of the lowest member of the "household". A typical clownfish society consists of one mature female, one mature male, and often a few adolescents. The dominant male and female pair maintain their role as the larger and only sexually mature adults in the group. Juveniles that join a male-female pair develop only to the adolescent stage and remain so, possibly for life, pending change in their social group. If disaster befalls the dominant female, the dominant male assumes her role and changes into a functional female and the strongest adolescent male assumes the role of the dominant male. If disaster befalls the dominant male, the strongest adolescent male assumes the role and changes into a functional dominant male. This cycle will continue or adolescents can move on to find a new host anemone that is not occupied and start their own "family". Do you know which of your clowns is male and which is female? 13. Greetings Fishy Friends! Phew! It's HOT out there! We hope everyone is staying cool these past few days. If you get too bored indoors, take a trip over and check out all our newest livestock. If you're looking to add some coral, we are expecting a large shipment Friday morning so it's the perfect time to swing on by! Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing you this weekend! What's New Back in stock are those handy, handheld Hanna Checkers (now that's a tongue twister). Currently available are the Hanna Phosphate and Alkalinity Checkers. Sometimes testing should be easier than it is. Testing for Phosphates in your water can be one of the toughest because of the relatively faint color change from clear to light-blue. Using the naked eye is a tough way to read it. So, if you're looking for a better way to test your Phosphates, look no further than our new Hanna high- and low-range Phosphate colorimeters. A colorimeter uses and LED and a digital sensor to read the color-change for you. We've got the low-range (0-200ppb) and high-range (0.0-2.5ppm) kits in stock. The high-range kit would be the one most of us would use. The low range kit would be great for those keeping an "Ultra Low Nutrient System". All three models are in stock and available for $55.99. We also have the replacement reagents available. Finally back in stock are the Aqualifter Pumps! This unique vacuum pump is designed to pump water up to 30" at a low flow rate of 3.5 gallons per hour. It is great to be used with any external overflow system as well as trace element dosing. Lots of new fish and inverts this week including Coral Beauty Angels, Atlantic Pygmy Angels, Midas Blennies, more Barnacle/Spineyhead Blennies, Bangaii Cardinals (captive raised), Green Clown Gobies, Purple Firefish, Hi Fin Banded Gobies, Gold Headed Sleeper Gobies (nice and large), Mandarin Dragonets, Tangaroa Gobies, Magnificent Foxface, Hippo Tangs (small & medium), Kole Tangs, Bluestreak Cleaner Wrasse, McCosker's Flasher Wrasse, very cute Yellow Banded Possum Wrasse, Six Line Wrasse, Trochus Snails, Astrea Snails, Turbo Snails, Cerith Snails, Indian Ocean Pistol Shrimp, Blue Coral Banded Shrimp, Peppermint Shrimp, Blue Linkia Starfish, Sand Sifting Starfish, Chocolate Chip Starfish, Mithrax Crabs, Arrow Crabs, Sally Lightfoot Crabs, Halloween Hermit Crabs, Pencil Urchins, and much more available so make sure to check out our website for up-to-date inventory and prices. Did you know that The Marine Scene carries a wide variety of captive bred animals, aquacultured corals and rock? If you are environmentally concerned about the ocean's reefs then we can help you help preserve them. We carry all sorts of captive bred fish and even some aquacultured corals and inverts. Among our captive bred livestock are all Clownfish, some Dottybacks, a few Gobies, Seahorses, some Cardinals, Abalone snails, Clams, some Anemones and Fighting Conchs. Our aquacultured corals include, but are not limited to, Xenia sp., Acropora sp., Montipora sp., Seriatopora sp., Sarcophyton sp., Chalice sp., Euphyllia sp., and many others. Did you also know there is a difference between "captive bred" and "tank raised"? You probably never thought about it but if a fish is "captive bred" it has been bred from egg to fry to fish in a tank; it's never even seen the ocean. Fish that are "tank raised" were wild caught at a very young juvenile stage and then raised in captivity. Do you know where your livestock is from? We are HIRING! Did you know that as the weather starts warming up, you might notice some problems keeping your tank cool. The intense lighting is one of the main causes of over-heating your aquarium. Your house temperature can also affect the temperature of your aquarium. Some easy ways of cooling your tank is by adding plastic cooling fans to your canopy or a chiller to your system. Fans are easily installed and less expensive than a chiller yet fans will only cool your system a couple of degrees whereas a chiller can cool your tank as much as you need depending on the size of the chiller. Don't forget that temperature stability is very important so you will still need a working heater even in these hot summer months coming up. Fluctuation of more that a couple of degrees can bring on parasites such as ich and can stress your fish, corals and inverts, so make sure that your temperature only changes a degree or two during your day and night cycle. Do you know how many degrees your tanks temperature fluctuates? We Are HIRING! There are several invertebrates available that will add beauty and balance to your marine aquarium and will thrive with out all the fancy light bulbs. Live sponges add bright color as well as extra filtration to your tank. Feather Dusters, Cluster Dusters, and other tube worms are also filter feeders and may add some movement to the rock structure. Many Gorgonian corals are non- or only slightly photo-synthetic and many have colorful polyps to add a different texture to a low light reef. More non-photosynthetic corals include; Distichophora, Dendronepthia (Carnation) and Sun corals. Of course the most popular low light corals are Mushrooms and Zoanthid polyps. And don't forget about all of the interesting shrimp, snails and crabs that can be fascinating as well as helpful in a reef tank. My personal favorite is the Boxing Pom-Pom crab. This little crab is white with pink markings and it holds tiny miniature anemones in its claws for food capture and defense.
