Good for both saltwater and freshwater setups! And don't forget about our coupon for extra fish savings! Did You Know? Do you know the difference between tap water and reverse osmosis deionized water? Tap water is filled with chlorine, phosphates, silicates, trace metals, nitrate, nitrite and even ammonia. All of these contaminantes can cause big problems in a saltwater tank, especially a reef tank. Such problems include; excessive algae, disease, sudden death, and so on. There are many filters available but the Reverse Osmosis Deionization method is the most thorough. Here at the Marine Scene we have several steps to our filtration process. Our water is passed through a 1 micron pre-filter, a large carbon filter, and a commercial grade pressurized reverse osmosis membrane. Next, there are two stages of deionization and finally the water is passed through an ammonia removal cartridge. What you are left with is the ultimate aquarium water, pure and uncontaminated. We usually have 400 gallons of water filtered at the start of each day and we even pre-mix with salt to make your maintenance easier...no more mixing! The RO/DI saltwater is $1.21 per gallon and the RO/DI fresh water is $.96 per gallon. We sell five gallon jugs and your first five gallon fill of water is free when you purchase one of our jugs. So next time you stop in, bring a container with you or purchase one of our handy jugs, and see the difference your water source can make. Do you know how pure your water is?

Rod's Food is back in stock. Rod's Food is a blend of many different ingredients designed to feed your entire reef system: brine shrimp, clams, fish eggs, garlic, krill, mysis, nori, oyster eggs, golden pearls, and many other yummy ingredients all your reef inhabitants will love! There are five different blends specifically for different type of systems. The Original Blend is designed as "The Complete Reef Food" to feed your typical reef aquarium including the fish, inverts and coral. The Herbivore Blend has all the ingredients that the Original Blend has yet with double the veggies, triple the nori and some other natural seaweed for those of you with many herbivorous fish within your reef. The Coral Blend was designed for those who want to feed frag tanks or a nano with very few fish. This blend lacks the greens and the larger particles that the Original Blend contains. For those of you who have very few or no corals but mainly reef fish, the Fish Only Blend will provide the same feeding as the Original Blend yet with much less coral foods. And last but not least is the Predator Blend. This food contains much larger pieces for those hungry predators and herbivores. A large shipment of fish and inverts arrived early this week. Good for both saltwater and freshwater setups! Did You Know? Did you know that it is beneficial to have a hospital (or quarantine) tank available? It is always good to quarantine a new fish before adding it to your main tank to ensure that the fish will not bring in any unwanted parasites. That is one main reason we quarantine just about all our new fish arrivals here at our store. It is also good to have a quarantine/hospital tank available for when a fish has a parasite or infection because medication will most likely be needed to cure it. There are a lot of reef-safe medications available, yet for those non-reef-safe meds, a hospital tank is the best to use. All you would need for a hospital tank is a 10-gallon or larger tank (remember the smaller the tank the more stress on the fish), live rock, a heater, and some power heads. You need to cycle the tank like you would your main tank and make sure it will support a fish or two living in it. Make sure the environment is stable and follow the medication dosages correctly. For more helpful information on quarantine and hospital tanks please speak with a sales associate. Are you sure you have the means to cure a sick fish?

Did you know that the water coming out of your RO/DI unit might not be as pure as you think? Tap/well water first passes through a 0.5 micron micro-tec sediment filter where silt, sediment and particulate are removed. Water is then forced through a high efficiency 0.5 micron carbon block filter. This matrix of micro- pulverized carbon efficiently adsorbs chlorine, chloramines, pesticides and other harmful organic chemicals. The water is stripped of membrane damaging particles and chemicals, flows into the RO module where pure water molecules are forced through the RO membrane leaving salts, hardness, bacteria, viruses, pyrogens and other impurities to be flushed from the system. RO membranes, although very good at removing contaminants, still allow trace amounts to pass through. Nitrates, phosphates and silica are among these substances not removed. By further processing RO water through mixed-bed deionization cartridges, even those difficult to remove chemicals are reduced to virtually undetectable levels. The Dual TDS meter offers an easy and convenient way of monitoring the performance of your RO or RO/DI unit. It allows you to quickly check the quality of the inlet and outlet water and helps you to determine when the cartridges need to be replaced. It is a great addition to any RO or RO/DI unit. Features: highly efficient and accurate due to its advanced microprocessor technology; displays TDS levels of the Feed Water and Product Water with in & out electrode probes; auto-off function conserves battery power, the unit shuts off automatically after 10 minutes of non- use; Dual Range-Measures from 0 ~ 999ppm, with a resolution of 1ppm; factory calibrated-recalibration is not necessary; comes equipped with John Guest Quick-Connect T-fittings; installs quickly and easily.

That is a great deal for some nice looking rock; practically cured already this rock has all sorts of shapes and sizes, is lighter weight than Fiji and has lots of life on/in it. Did You Know? I have been getting lots of questions this week about proper acclimation procedures. Did you know that acclimating your new livestock is essential to their survival? Just floating the bag on your tank's surface won't cut it. In order to properly acclimate all livestock, try drip acclimation. Adding water from your aquarium to the water the critters are in will gradually and safely adjust the temperature, pH, salinity and overall water quality to match your aquariums. This way your new livestock won't be stressed or shocked when introduced into their new home. You can use airline tubing to create the drip by tying a knot in the end of it and adjusting the tightness of the knot to obtain about 3 drops per second. Once the volume in the container doubles, your livestock purchase can be removed and placed carefully in the aquarium. There is also what I call the shot glass procedure. No, you aren't going to get your fishes drunk. After floating the bag in your aquarium water with the lights out, add approximately an ounce or shot glass of aquarium water into the bag. Do this about every minute until the volume in the bag doubles then carefully remove the livestock item and place it carefully in the aquarium. Also make sure that you are not dumping the store water back into your aquarium. Keep in mind that many places will use medication in their fish only systems and you don't want to add anything that may potentially harm your critters. It is best to just dump that water down a drain. For more information on the drip acclimation and shot glass procedures ask any Marine Scene employee for a handout.

Check out our online newsletter for a 20% off coupon Did You Know? Did you know that Mantis Shrimp are predatory crustaceans that use specialized raptorial appendages to capture and subdue their prey by either spearing the animals or smashing them with heavily calcified clubs. Even though these shrimp are not reef friendly, being that they can and will attack and kill just about fish or invert that moves, they are actually well sought-after by mantis fans since they have such beauty, cool behavior, and are otherwise very difficult to obtain both online and from stores. Mantis are classified into two general groups: smashers that club their prey with great force (similar to that of a 22 caliber bullet), and spearers that have sharp appendages that literally skewer their prey. They come in an array of colors, greens, browns, greys; however the most sought after is the Peacock Mantis. They cannot be kept with other animals because they are highly predatory yet are great in a species only tank and can be kept with live corals. To learn more about the fascinating behavior and great intelligence of these animals stop in and speak with one of our staff. And don't forget, if you are just stopping by, take a peek at the Peacock Mantis we currently have in stock!

Did you know that magnesium plays an important role in helping maintain the calcium concentration in reef systems? If the concentration of magnesium is too low, it can become difficult to increase the calcium to the desired level no matter how much of a calcium supplement is added. So if your calcium levels are constantly low, make sure to add magnesium to your testing and dosing schedule. Do you know what your magnesium level is?

Products include live sand boosters, live rock boosters, coralline algae boosters, coral foods and lots more great supplements to choose from to make your tank thrive. Did You Know? Did you know alkalinity, aka carbonate hardness, is important to maintain in both a reef and fish-only-tank. When dosed properly, alkalinity helps buffer the pH of the aquarium, ensuring that it does not drop suddenly. In a reef tank, alkalinity helps maintain the calcium level and is a major building block of coralline algae, which helps prevent nuisance algae from growing. At the store we check our alkalinity weekly and recommend that all hobbyists do the same. We carry a big selection of different alkalinity buffers and different brands of test kits for it. Do you know what your alkalinity level is?

Nutramar Ova is also useful for feeding to nearly all species of fish throughout the larval and post-larval stages. A great new food to add to your fishes and corals' diets! Since Tom was out in LA over the weekend he was able to check out many of the vendors there and personally hand pick out some amazing stuff! He said the fish selection was quite low so looks like there are some fish regulations out there that I am unsure about or the vendors are keeping a low stock throughout these economic times. Although the fish stocks were low, the corals were amazing. We got in about 100 pieces of cherry corals so make sure to come on in and check out all the new stuff! Australian Euphyllias, lots of beautiful Echinophyllias (frags being made) and Echinoporas, Chalice, Pink and Green Maze Brains, Aussie Acan Lords (frags being made), extremely Blue Mushrooms, Red Favites War Coral (frags being made), a Pink with Yellow Eye Goniopora, Aussie Moon Corals, Aussie Duncan/Whiskers polyps, gorgeous Aussie Elegance, Red and Green Trachyphyllias, Metallic Wellsophyllias, Blue Zoanthid Frags (Joker Paly), Red (Lava) Zoanthid Frags, Green Zoa Frags, Blue Xenia, amazing Acroporas, Black Sun Coral, Green Scroll Coral, Green Stylopora, and I am sure a few others slipped my brain. As you noticed we are also fragging up many of these corals to help everyone get a piece as well as lower the prices for you! We did get a fish shipment in as well which included Helfrichi Firefish, Purple Firefish, regular Firefish, Bluestreak Cleaner Wrasse, McCosker's Flasher Wrasse, Long Spine Cardinals, Midas Blennies, a small Naso Tang, Spotted Hawkfish, Tail Spot Blennies, Two Bar Rabbitfish, Yellow Watchman Gobies, Six Line Wrasse, Red Scooter Dragonets, Mandarin Dragonets, Lawnmower Blennies, a Juvenile Emperor Angelfish, Foxface Rabbitfish and many others. A fresh shipment of beautiful Indo Rock arrived earlier this week. It has great macro/microalgae growth as well as lots of beautiful coralline algae's. Many shapes and sizes and very porous. Photos Link... What's On Sale Sales for the Weekend of August 21st and August 22nd Alor Live Rock is $2 off per pound! Originally $9.99 per pound this rock is very lightweight, porous, fully cured and good coralline algae growth. Many of our corals are on sale up to 50% off! Lots of beautiful corals have been looked over the past couple weeks. Maybe a discount in price will find them a good home. All Marc Weiss and Weiss Organics Products are on sale! These products are great for reef and fish-only tanks. Products include live sand boosters, live rock boosters, coralline algae boosters, coral foods and lots more great supplements to choose from to make your tank thrive. All Chillers are 10% off. Chillers are a great unit to help keep you aquarium cool throughout these hot summer months. Available sizes include 1/15, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2 and 1 HP. We even have a little micro- chiller perfect for little nano-tanks! I am currently running one on my little 4-gallon to keep those awesome Catalina Gobies. All Cooling Fan kits are 10% off. Fans can help reduce the heat of an aquarium without having to spend lots on a chiller. We have many types available including the IceCap Temperature Controlled kits. Although fans work pretty well, they may not be able to cool your aquarium to your liking but they are worth the try. They can also help reduce moisture within your stand. Did You Know? Did you know that there are many benefits to metal halide systems for your reef tank? The main benefit is the intense illumination they provide. They are capable of providing several hundred watts of energy for one bulb while other systems such as PC's or VHO's would need multiple bulbs to provide the same intense light output. Halide bulbs also create that beautiful shimmering effect making the aquarium appear more like the ocean. Using metal halide lighting you are also able to care for a wider range of corals including SPS (small polyp stonies) and even those beautiful clams. There are some minor downfalls which can be easily altered such as they tend to create a lot more heat in the aquarium. Cooling fans and the use of a chiller can help with this problem. Most halide units have to be suspended at least six inches above the aquarium which makes some aquarists hesitant to hang their unit from the ceiling. I have suggested using heavy duty shelving brackets so you can hang the unit from the wall instead of the ceiling and some newer units are now designed with legs so you can prop it right on your aquarium, no need for any hanging! Please see a sales associate for more information on metal halide units and the best one for your aquarium. Do you have the best lighting for your reef?

Chemi-Pure Elite adds ferric oxide to the original Chemi-Pure formula to also remove phosphates and silicates. Did You Know? Did you know that you don't need to "gravel vac" your reef tank? In fact you may be doing more harm than good with a "gravel vac". Your sand bed has different layers which different levels of toxins accumulate and your micro-organisms feed off of. When you stir up the sand, you end up releasing trapped toxins which could cause your tank to become unstable or even crash your tank. Also, when you apply suction to the bottom of your tank, you are pulling out all sorts of important critters. Think of all the micro-organisms that are such an important part of your tank's ecology. Don't pour them down the drain with the dirty water, keep the good and dump the bad by siphoning out water from the top of the tank. If your sand bed has algae blooming on or in it there are a few different critters that can help clean the algae such as Nassarius and Cerith snails, Sand Sifting starfish, and even hermit crabs can help keep your sand bed looking nice and pretty. So remember, don't vacuum, let the critters take care of that. gotta post some pictures...
  11. Gurnie, just exactly what concern do yuo have about our water quality? We must be doing something right to survive for over 13 years. This is typical of a ridiculous and meaningless post that can have bad implications for a business like mine. And while you are posting such commentary how about you describe your experience and qualifications prior to randomly making absurd opinions. Tom

Not much left but a few nice larger pieces and a selection of smaller nano sized pieces. Did You Know? Did you know that one of the most common mistakes made by the novice marine aquarist is topping off their aquarium from evaporation with salt water? You must top off your aquarium with FRESH water. The salt does not evaporate so as the water level decreases (from evaporation) the salt level increases. You would only use salt water if you are trying to slowly raise your salinity or if you are performing a water change. So the lesson is: top off with fresh to maintain a stable salinity and water change with salt. And don't forget to use your hydrometer or refractometer regularly to be sure your salinity is stable and consistent.
  13. I appreciate all of the kind words spoken here. For over 13 years we have strived to maintain the best possible shopping experience with a high quality of product. That goes hand in hand with the quality of our staff. I have always pondered the "price" assumptions. I know for a fact that a number of our coral prices here are less than some of the favored vendors (before the 10% WAMAS discount). At the end of the day we simply want to stay in business and afford our staff the livelihood that allows them to have a good life. I would also voice my appreciation for your recognition of our staff. I personally feel that our current staff is hands down the best we have ever had. If you haven't been here in a while or at all come say hi. Thanks again, Tom

Good for both saltwater and freshwater setups! Did You Know? Did you know that certain fish, coral and invertebrates in your aquarium need to be target fed? Target feeding is when you directly squirt liquid foods such as Phytoplanktons and Zooplanktons to corals, or prong feed foods such as silversides, squid, clams and krill to anemones, LPS, lionfish, eels and puffers. Corals are largely carnivorous and do not only feed from the lighting or the trace elements in the water but zooplankton, phytoplankton, copepods, free-living bacteria and many other planktons. While some corals do not require constant feedings because they have zooxanthellae in their tissue which obtain a significant portion of their nutrition, many others exclusively feed on phytoplanktons and zooplanktons. At The Marine Scene we carry a variety of live, freeze dried, spray dried and frozen coral foods. Next time you come in make sure to speak with a sales associate to get the right foods for not only your fish, but your corals and invertebrates as well. And don't forget about the feeding utensils such as the SeaSquirt feeder which is on sale this weekend.

Good for both saltwater and freshwater setups! Did You Know? Did you know that aiptasia (aka. glass anemone) is a nuisance anemone that rapidly reproduces and can sting, even kill your corals? Aiptasia is a persistent critter because when you try to scrape it off your rocks or glass you actually end up spreading it. There are a few natural ways of controlling this nuisance anemone. Peppermint Shrimp, Berghia Nudibranchs and most Butterflyfish can and will eat them yet sometimes it is easier and faster to just zap it yourself. Using a needle like applicator and the treatment Joe's Juice or Aiptasia-X you can target and kill each one. It can take a little time to get each one but it is better to start getting rid of them as soon as they show up or you will eventually have an infestation which can be almost impossible to control. Do you have any Aiptasia in your tank?

Did you know that all crustaceans "molt" their shell or exoskeleton? Just as we outgrow our clothes, crustaceans outgrow their shells. Prior to molting, the crustacean reabsorbs some of the calcium carbonate from the old exoskeleton and then secretes enzymes to separate the old shell from the underlying skin, or epidermis. Then, the epidermis secretes a new, soft, paper-like shell beneath the old shell. This process can take several weeks. A day before the crustacean molts, it starts to absorb seawater and begins to swell up like a balloon. This process helps to expand the old shell and causes it to come apart at a special seam that runs around the body. The carapace then opens up like a lid and the crustacean extracts itself from its old shell by pushing and compressing all of its appendages repeatedly. It can take up to 15 minutes for a crustacean to "crawl" out of its old shell. When a crab molts, it molts all of its legs, its eyestalks, its antennae, all its mouthparts and its gills. Once the crustacean has completed its molting, the new shell is very soft at first making the crustacean vulnerable to predators. Within a few days the shell hardens up. The molting process does not only allow a crustacean to grow, but it helps get rid of parasites, barnacles and other animals growing on their old shells. Molting also allows a crustacean to regenerate lost appendages. Before molting a new limb but grows out of the missing legs joint. After molting, the new leg is smaller than the others yet overtime with more moltings, the new leg grows back to its normal size. Have you seen any moltings in your aquarium? Eveybody loves pictures!

Most of these filter cartridges can be used with the Oceanic BioCubes and even the CUSA AquaPods, though the cartridges may be slightly larger or smaller. Good for both saltwater and freshwater setups! Did You Know? Did you know that it is essential to have good water circulation in your aquarium? Water flow is an important factor for many corals as it helps to carry oxygen to them, brings foods and stimulates animal activity. Of course certain corals prefer high current vs. low current and vice-versa so make sure to do some research and position them appropriately in your aquarium. Good circulation also helps to oxygenate the water and keep slime algae's at bay. One of the most important roles good water circulation plays is to drive the biological filtration in the tank. Live rock can not filter the water if the water is not flowing through it! Good circulation also keeps detritus and other tank matter from settling on the bottom which allows them to be filtered out by a mechanical filter, box sponge or protein skimmer. A good rule of thumb for water flow is to turn over the entire volume of your tank 10 to 20 times per hour. So, for example, if you have a 75 gallon tank, the total flow in the tank should equal at least 750 to 1,500 gallons per hour. Do you know how much flow you have in your tank? Stop in and speak with one of our knowledgeable staff to help you select the right circulation pump for your system.

Fully cured in all different shapes and sizes, about 250 pounds in stock! Did You Know? Did you know that a small water change may be better for your tank than a larger one? Small, frequent and regular water changes will keep the water in your tank more stable, clean and healthy. Water changes replenish the trace elements, dilute nitrate and help keep the pH and alkalinity stable. If you are doing large changes after long intervals your water may already be depleted of important trace elements, be dangerously high in nitrates and have a low pH. Over time your aquarium critters adjust to these conditions gradually. If you do a large water change you may bring the water parameters back to normal all within a few minutes. Your aquarium life may not be able to acclimate to this drastic change in water quality in such a short period of time. If you change a small amount, say 10% of the water on a regular, frequent basis, say every other week, your animals may barely notice any change and live much happier, healthier and longer lives. Do you know if your water change schedule is stressing out your fish and inverts? Stop in and speak with one of our knowledgeable, friendly staff members for more information about water changes and any other questions you may have.

We are overstocked on a few types of corals and fish so a good time to put them on a sale so we can get in some newer variety. Take advantage of this sale and add a new coral or fish to your tank! Did You Know? Did you know the term "frag" is used in our hobby to describe a smaller piece or cutting of a coral that is grown into a new colony? Many corals are quite easy to create frags from and it is also a great way of preserving the reef. Small Polyp Stony corals like the Acropora species are simply broken into smaller pieces, and the branches are glued to a small rock or plug and placed in the tank to grow. Given time, these "daughter colonies" will grow to rival the original coral in size. Soft corals like Leathers can be cut with a razor blade, and the branches attached or glued to rubble rocks in the same way. These softies grow quite fast, and many frags can be made in a relatively short time. The Marine Scene sells many different types of frags, mainly captive raised out of our display tanks or from ORA. We also sell the glues, plugs, disks and rubble rock to create your own frags. Ready to try fragging yourself? Ask one of our staff for help or more information!

Did you know that there is a difference between "cured" and "uncured" live rock? When live rock is harvested from the ocean, it is likely that there are several critters residing in and on that rock. Everything from sponge to starfish to crabs has been found on fresh batches of rock. However, the live rock is shipped to stores in wet newspaper, which means the most delicate of the organisms living on the rock will most likely not survive the trip. So, the curing process is the period of time it takes for those more delicate organisms to die off and be broken down naturally by the bacteria that inhabits the pores of the rock. When adding rock to an existing, established setup, try to find cured rock or cure the rock yourself at home. All live rock needs to cure is saltwater, constant flow and stable temperature. Use a container like a fish safe bucket, a small power head and heater, fill it with saltwater, set up your power head and heater and wait. Changing the water in the bucket and scrubbing the rock may speed along the process. In a new setup, adding uncured rock gives you the benefit of starting a natural nitrogen cycle and the chance of hitch hikers which can be interesting. So now you know, and knowing is half of the battle. For more information about live rock, its benefits and curing process visit the Q&A portion of our website. Don't forget, we have some nice cured Pohnpei Live Rock currently on sale! Here are more pictures of our current stock...

Did you know that Mithrax Crabs, also known as Emerald Crabs, eat all kinds of marine algae and nuisance algae, especially Valonia which is commonly known as green bubble algae? They are a hard-shelled crab with a shiny green, flat, compact body and hairy legs. They are sometimes available in a reddish color as well. They are a hardy crab and are very popular for use in an aquarium because of its varied appetite for multiple algae's, good and bad, and leftover foods. They do require an established aquarium with plenty of live rock for scavenging. If you have an algae problem, get some Mithrax Crabs and make sure you have enough various clean-up crew critters to help out with the algae problem. And if you have bubble algae issues, make sure to pick up some Mithrax Crabs! Some pics for you to drool over
  25. Happy St. Patrick's Day Weekend WAMAS! Many of you have already gasped as you walked through our doors. For those who are unaware, we are remodeling our main reef display. We have prepared to replace the existing 150 gallon over the next few weeks with a brand new 260 gallon custom built starphire glass tank along with new cabinetry and equipment. Basically the works! The finished result will give you an excellent idea of the quality of work you can expect our expert custom service and installation team to do in your home or office. We thank you for your patience as we build out the new system, and hope you enjoy watching the process as our display evolvesit has already begun! Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing you this weekend! What's New Rod's Food is a new item in our freezer. The Herbivore Blend has all the ingredients that the Original Blend has yet with double the veggies, triple the nori and some other natural seaweeds for those of you with many herbivorous fish within your reef. MacroFeast is finally back in stock! This live red gracilaria is great for any refugium and for feeding your tangs, angels, butterflies, rabbitfish and many others. Click here to see what books are on sale. Did You Know? Did you know that it is recommended to have at least one clean-up critter per gallon! This includes a variety of snails, hermits, crabs and starfish. Most of these critters help clean excess foods, nuisance algae and waste. Each different critter usually has a specific task it does well; however, as general scavengers, they are all recommended. We carry three different types of hermit crabs, Blue Leg, Burgundy Leg, and Red Leg, which cleans up hair algae, slime algae and other algae's and waste. The two varieties of crabs we carry are the Mithrax Crabs, which are great for eating bubble algae, and Sally Lightfoot Crabs which clean everything from hair algae to slime algae. We also carry a large selection of snails including Margaritas which are great for your glass and just a good all-round snail, Turbos which do an amazing job on hair algae's, Crown Tops and which are good for hair algae and slime algae's, and Cerith and Nassarius which are great sand sifters. The best starfish cleaner we carry are the Serpent Starfish. While they are a nocturnal animal, they do a great job of cleaning under the live rock of excess foods and waste. We also stock an assortment of shrimp, urchins and more ornamental critters to make your tank look like the ocean of your dreams. Also, make sure not to feed your critters (except your starfish) because then they will get spoiled on food and won't eat the algae and waste they are meant to eat! Don't forget we also have lots of cleaning tools to help get those tough spots your critters can't reach or just don't clean fast enough. So to make sure your tank looks it's best, make sure you have enough "clean-up crew" critters in your tank and make sure to replenish them as needed!
