What's On Sale CORALS ON SALE! Buy one coral and get 10% off, buy two and get 15% off both, buy three or more and get 20% off each! I thought we'd extend this sale another weekend since it is always a hit. Some corals are already on a bigger sale, even up to 50% off! (Sale not combined with already discounted corals and does not include frag tank coral frags). (expires 04/25/12) Maxi-Mini Anemones are 20% off! These small anemones are quite easy to keep and come in a beautiful rainbow of colors. Related to the Carpet Anemones, these guys stay much smaller and prefer to be placed in the rockwork as opposed to a sand bed. Although the Mini-Maxi's will not host clownfish, they are homes to anemone crabs and shrimp, especially the Sexy Anemone Shrimp. Unlike the aggressive Carpet Anemones, the Mini-Maxi's are not aggressive yet their tentacles are quite sticky so they can pack a powerful sting if something touches it. You can keep multiples in an aquarium and even keep them close to each other creating a really neat rainbow colony. (expires 04/28/12) 50% off ORA's Green-Tipped Orange Birdsnest Frags! The original ORA frag was placed in our display in 2009 and has grown beautifully. We have taken frags from our healthy colony and have plenty of frags (and even larger colonies) to go around. (does not include Frag Tank frags). Brightwell Aquatics have a great variety of different trace elements and supplements for marine aquariums to help keep water parameters within the correct ranges which in turn increase the health of the aquariums livestock. Take advantage of our multi-purchase discount scheme; buy 1 bottle at regular price, buy 2 and get 10% off both, buy 3 and get 15% off each and if you buy 4 or more, take 20% off each same size bottles. This is a great time to replace those almost-empty bottles or add the few that you are missing. Remember, your reef aquarium utilizes calcium, alkalinity, strontium, magnesium and iodine the fastest, so make sure you are replenishing those elements regularly. (expires 04/28/12) Purchase a Red Sea MAX 130D (34-gallons) or 250 (65-gallons) and we'll deliver it for FREE! Some geographical restrictions apply. Red Sea MAX systems are a great all-in-one, plug-n-play system for beginner to advanced aquarists. Stop in and see them in person and we'll be happy to answer your questions. We have for sale a very nice fixer upper tank. This is a Glass half circle aquarium with an internal overflow, stand and canopy plus a

We will keep you updated on the progress of the install. In this hobby we are constantly battling algae's, both good and bad. As well as focusing on your glass and aquascape, make sure your pumps and other equipment are clean as well. Calcium and lime buildup on your equipment can reduce their functionality and can even cause damage. To prevent this and keep your equipment nice and clean, stop in and pick up some Magi-Klean. Magi-Klean is a powder form of phosphonic acid which can be used safely to efficiently remove calcium and lime deposits from your aquarium equipment. Not to be used directly in the aquarium so make sure to remove your equipment as needed and soak in this magic solution. When selecting that next fish, along the thought of its personality and vibrance, think about its benefits. Natural algae grazers such as Blennies provide both clean up function as well as add comical character and even coloration. Look into getting a Copperband or Klein's Butterfly if you're have difficulty ridding your tank of those pesky Aiptasia anemones. Check out the different Wrasse species that do a great job at eating unwanted parasites and irritants such as flatworms and nudibranchs off of coral and clams. Shrimp Gobies and Sand Sifter Gobies are great at keeping your substrate turned over and clean. We keep a great selection and variety of fish in stock to choose from so stop in and we'll be happy to help narrow down your next fish. A coral shipment is expected to arrive Friday morning. These corals are coming from the same source that Tom traveled to and handpicked from the other week. The shipment should include more beautiful Acropora, Chalice, Lobophyllias, Zoanthids, Aussie Hammer and Torch, green-polyped Toadstools, Trachyphyllias and Wellsophyllias, orange, green and purple Fungias, Alveopora and Goniopora, and many more. The Radion features full-spectrum, fully adjustable, upgradeable, advanced lighting conditions, wireless connectivity and much more. Stop in and see one in action! Ready to get that new fish? We have a great selection to choose from for any size aquarium. For those with smaller tanks check out the Spineyhead Blennies, Blue Neon Gobies, Green Banded Gobies, Yashia or Hi Fin Gobies, Tail Spot Blenny, a cool Flametail Combtooth Blenny, Clown Gobies, Firefish, Pink Bar Gobies, and the Rainfordi Goby. For medium to larger systems check out our Coral Beauty, Cherub Pygmy, Flame and Flameback Angels, Lyretail Anthias, Longnose, Spotted and Flame Hawkfish, Lawnmower and Starry Blennies, Copperband and Klein's Butterflies, Clownfish, Scooter and Mandarin Dragonets, Dottybacks, male and female Hoeven's Wrasse, Naso, Bristletooth Tomini, Yellow, Purple, Scopas, Sailfin, Powder Blue and Hippo Tangs, along with many others. The majority of the fish we stock are reef safe but each fish is different so make sure you ask us any questions you have or let us know what you have in your tank before you choose that next fish. If you have a fish only system that is quite large, we have a couple beautiful Crosshatch Triggers that are quite personable and are 20% off each. We also have a nice sized Volitan Lionfish for those with preditor tanks. Time to repopulate your janitorial crew? Make sure that not only are your parameters in check but that you have a variety of hermits, snails and other scavengers to help keep algae at bay. We have a huge selection of inverts that will help you combat algae issues, along with other critters to add some fun character and uniquness to your tank. Flame Scallops, Maxima and Deresa Clams, Pink-n-Green Cucumbers, Skunk Cleaner Shrimp, Fire Shrimp, my favorite the Coral Banded Shrimp, Serpent Starfish, Sea Urchins, Sand Sifting Starfish, Arrow Crabs, and 21 different types of hermits and snails are currently available. What's On Sale Time to replace your media? Take 15% off Carbon media, Phosphate media and/or Denitrate Media! If you're trying to reduce phosphates or nitrates (which are big algae factors), or just using carbon for additional organic control, stop in and stock up. If you are not currently using a media reactor, check out the Next Reef Media Reactors we carry in three different sizes. The use of a media reactor greatly improves the functunality of the media being used and you will see better results than just placing the media in a mesh bag in a high flow area of your tank. Compact and easy to install, ask us about the media reactors we carry and which will suit your system the best. (expires 03/08/12) All Kent Pro Scraper Products are 15% off! Pro Scrapers are great for cleaning hard, encrusting algae's such as coralline off glass and/or acrylic. The scrapers and scrubbers include the replacement plastic and steel blades, short and long handle plastic and steel scrapers, Aqua Mop, utility packs and replacement pads. Kent 24" Acrylic Pro Scrapers are $10 off! These long handled scrapers are great for cleaning those hard to reach places and especially for deep tanks. The blade is plastic and safe for acrylic yet can also be used on glass tanks. Have a glass tank, that's OK. We have replacement blades in both plastic for acrylic and steel for glass (sold separately). (expires 03/08/12) Clearance items at closeout prices! We use Aqueon (All Glass Aquariums), Marineland and Oceanic for our tank vendors, so if they make it, we can get it. Now if you

  10. Happy Friday! It's been a busy week with lots of shipments arriving. We've been working hard to bring in some newer livestock lately so keep an eye out for that special new arrival. and as always, if you are interested in something we don't regularly stock or sell out of too quick, let us know and we may be able to special order it for you or add you to our store wish list. No experience necessary and we also have applications for those who do not yet have a resume, so please come on by. Flexible shifts including daytime, evenings and Saturday's are available so if you are looking for some extra cash, your first job or just really enjoy the hobby, this is the place for you! Please emailresume or work experience. Hope to see you soon! ~The Marine Scene Team What's New Live Rock has finally arrived! We received 500 pounds of Vanuatu rock. It is quite nice looking, very porous, shapely and lightweight and covered with microalgae's and coralline algae's. We have quantity prices breaks set up for this rock to help with larger purchases. A few fish arrived this week that we haven't seen in a while. Stop in and check out the shy yet beautiful Marine Betta. These reclusive fish tend to take a short period of time to adjust to their environment but once they do, they are quite hardy and very interesting. The Marine Betta mimics a moray eel and is usually found in deeper waters so they tend to stay near or within the rockwork. Although reef safe, these fish may snack on other small fishes and crustaceans. The Blue Jaw Trigger is also finally back in stock. This is a beautiful trigger, and unlike most other triggers they typically do not bother other fish and invertebrates making them a nice addition to a community reef tank. Also check out our tiny Matted Leatherjacket Filefish. This little guy is so adorable and will even help you rid your tank of those pesky Aiptasia Anemones. Be aware though that these Filefish are known to nip at soft and stony corals so use caution if planning to house in a coral reef system. A beautiful Red-Head Fairy Wrasse is also in stock and adjusting very well. As with any Wrasse, be sure to have a closed lid on your aquarium as they are great jumpers. We have plenty more fish in stock and ready to go to a new home. Dwarf Angels, Bartlett's Anthias, Lyretail Anthias, Barnacle Blennies, Lawnmower and Starry Blennies, cute little Tail Spot Blennies, Klein's Butterflies, Pajama and Bangaii Cardinals, lots of Clownfish, Bluefin Damsels, Azure and Yellowtail Damsels, Mandarin Dragonets, Bar Gobies, Clown Gobies, Firefish, a Pink Spotted Watchman Goby, a little Rainfordi Goby, Royal Grammas, Orchid Dottybacks, Purple and Bicolor Dottybacks, Six Line and Four Line Wrasse, Hoeven's Wrasse, Purple and Yellow Tangs, Naso Tangs, Kole Tangs and many, many more! Our invert selection is all stocked up as well! Lots of Chaetomorpha is available so if you are looking to stock your refugium then come on by! A beautiful selection of corals are available. Or better yet, stop in and see them for yourself, always better in person! Did You Know? Did you know that over time, organic waste, silicates, phosphates and many other unwanted impurities are built up in an aquarium? Not removing them can be harmful to the health of your fish, corals and invertebrates and can even create algae issues. There are many ways of removing these impurities safely. Water changes using RO/DI water, carbon and phosphate removers are the main effective way to remove these unwanted impurities. At The Marine Scene we carry a variety of different medias used to remove organic waste, phosphates, silicates, toxic metals, color impurities, acids and many others. We also carry the appropriate media bags and reactor canisters to properly use the media. Seachem SeaGel is a very good product that is a combination of both carbon and phosphate removers to safely and effectively remove the majority of unwanted impurities leaving your aquarium looking crystal clear and removing food sources of nuisance algae

Flexible shifts including daytime, evenings and Saturday's are available so if you are looking for some extra cash, your first job or just really enjoy the hobby, this is the place for you! Hope to see you soon! ~The Marine Scene Team What's New A coral shipment arrived earlier this week with some beautiful Wellsophyllia pieces, two-tone Frogspawns, neon green Ridge Hammers, green and orange Torches, Long Tentacle Plates, happy Bubbles, Star Polyps, orange Rhodactus Mushrooms, Pipe Organs, Yellow Polyps, Galaxys, red and green Favia Brains, and lots more beautiful pieces. We received some beautiful Deresa and Maxima Clams, a beautiful Bahama Red Serpent, Purple Long Tentacle Anemones, Flame Scallops, Mini-Maxi Anemones, Peppermint Shrimp, Blue Globe Urchins, Yellow Tip Hermits, Mithrax Crabs, Chestnut Algae Cowries, Zebra Turbo Snails, Sand Sifting Starfish, Arrow Crabs and so many other neat critters to add to your aquarium. Although many of the marine inverts available seem small and unnoticable, they are a wonderful addition for general algae, overfed food cleanup and interesting symbiosis with their tank mates. As us what are favorite critter is and why, it just may become one of your favorites. Looking for a different and interesting fish to add? That can be a tough choice with all that variety we carry. Think of where you may be lacking some character. Do you need a bottom dweller such as a Watchman Gob, Hi-Fin Goby, Pinkbar Goby, Jawfish, Scooter Dragonet, Sleeper Goby or even an Engineer Goby? Maybe a top current swimmer like those Green Chromis or Midas Blennies? How about that unique fish that lacks a swim bladder and enjoys perching along the rockwork like a Hawkfish, Neon Goby, Clown Goby, Lawnmower Blenny or one of those tiny Spineyhead Blennies? There are a lot of neat fish currently available that may have not been your original choice. Learning the characteristics of a fish will help you decide if that will be a great next addition, and we are always here to help you in your quest. Check Out What's Available Now! Amazing selection to choose from, whether it is a specific coral system such as SPS or a mixed reef, we are sure you will find that great new piece. Did You Know? Did you know that trace elements are naturally occurring elements found in varying quantities in seawater? They are the elements that fish, corals and invertebrates use to form their skeleton, tissue, and to help maintain coloration and health. Some of the trace elements are rapidly utilized by the corals and need to be replenished on a regular basis. Any trace element that is naturally occurring in the ocean should be present in a captive saltwater tank. Depending on the quantity and type of animals in the aquarium, different trace elements become more or less important. Here at the Marine Scene, we suggest that a reef tank be dosed with Calcium, Magnesium, Strontium and Iodine. Tanks with abundance of macroalgaes should be dosed with Iron, Bromide, and Iodide. Fish only tanks should be dosed with all elements, but perhaps to a lesser degree. There are numerous test kits for the hobbyist to use which help to identify the particular needs of a given tank. Always remember that you should test for that element before dosing to maintain proper levels. The Marine Scene carries all the trace elements that saltwater aquariums need as well as the test kits. Check out our few top brands of water care products for the necessary trace elements, buffers and vitamins that your aquarium needs. If you have any questions about your tanks personal needs, please feel free to stop by the store and speak with a sales associate. Is your aquarium being dosed properly?

Ich, or Cryptocaryon irritans, is one of the two most common parasite that attacks the immune system of fish. Signs of infection are rubbing or scratching against the rock or substrate, rapid breathing, loss of appetite, abnormal swimming and especially the telltale white spots. The spots are usually described as small grains of salt stuck the body and fins of the fish. Ich has an interesting lifecycle in different stages. The stage where the parasite is attached to the fish is called a trophont. The trophont will usually stay attached for about seven days the leaves and becomes a protomont. The protomont travels to the substrate and crawls around for a few hours and as long as 18 hours after it leaves its host (the fish). Once the protomont attaches to a surface, it begins to encyst and is then called a tomont. Dividing inside the cyst are hundreds of daughter parasites, called tomites. This stage is noninfectious and can last from three to 28 days. Once the tomites hatch they start looking for a host. This stage is called theronts and they must find a host within 24 hours or die. If they find a host they transform into trophonts and this entire process begins all over again. A few ways to cure ich is to place the affected fish in a quarantine tank and dose with Copper. If this is not practical, there is a reef-safe medication called Kick-Ich. It is a two week treatment that does not kill the Ich, but attacks the stages of its lifecycle not allowing it to continue to breed or host on the fish. If the fish can be caught, giving it a freshwater dip can help kill the parasites off the fish. Dipping the fish daily will continue to kill off any ich that is hosting on the fish, which in turn, will kill the cycle. To do a freshwater dip, use dechlorinated tap water, the same temperature as the tank, in a big enough container. Put the fish in the dip and let it swim around for no less than 5 minutes and even up to 20 minutes. The longer the fish stays in the freshwater, the better to kill the parasites. Once the dip is done, the fish can be placed back in its main tank or in the hospital tank. When dosing any medication, dipping can also be done daily but no more than once a day. Another more natural method to help rid Ich and other parasites from fish is to feed a variety of meaty and veggie foods soaked with vitamins and even garlic extract. Since Ich attacks the immune system of the fish, keeping the fish well fed with a balanced diet will help keep it healthy and happy.

Did You Know? Did you know that Zoanthids and Palythoa's are a very popular coral, grow rapidly and come in a variety of colors and patterns? As with many other corals, Zoanthids and Palys are dubbed some weird and crazy names such as "fire and ice" and "green hornets" and even "lord of the rings". Some of these names are based on the colors and patterns of the specific zoa's and some are just for fun and have little or nothing to do with the actual species identification. Zoanthids and Palys are usually quite tolerant to many conditions yet do best in a moderate to higher current and moderate to high lighting. They are filter feeders using their "skirts" to capture foods and move to their mouths. Target feeding will encourage faster growth. One has to take precautions when handling Zoanthids and Palythoa's as they secrete a slime that is toxic to humans. It is best to use gloves when handling them, especially if you have any open wounds, and take extra care not to touch your eyes or mouth after touching the polyps. All-in-all, Zoanthids and Palythoa's are a great addition to any reef system and will add some great color mixes. Do you have any Zoa's or Palys? PICTURES!

Make sure to check out our FLYER for the entire list of these great specials. (Clearance prices good only while supplies last!) And don't forget about that coupon for 20% off any Invert! Did You Know? Did you know that temperature is a very important factor in a healthy reef tank? Ocean animals, especially invertebrates like shrimp, snails and corals, will perish in water that is either too hot or too cold. The ideal temperature range is between 74 and 78 degrees for most reef critters. Most reef tank keepers usually struggle with higher temperatures due to the heat produced by the intense lighting and mechanical equipment. Here are some tips to help keep the temperature down; install cooling fans on either side of you canopy, leave the lid of the tank open to release trapped heat, or reduce the duration of time the lights are running. If you have metal halides, try 4 hours of white light and let your cooler actinic lights run for 6 to 8 hours. Make sure your tank isn't getting any direct sunlight that may be heating up the water. And of course don't forget to check your heater to make sure the thermostat is running properly. Keep in mind a natural decline in temperature overnight is normal, just be sure it isn't falling more than a degree or two from dusk until dawn. Do you know how stable your temperature is?

Check out the right side of our online newsletter for some used equipment now at reduced prices! Did You Know? Did you know that it is beneficial to have a hospital (or quarantine) tank available? It is always good to quarantine a new fish before adding it to your main tank to ensure that the fish will not bring in any unwanted parasites. It is also good to have a quarantine/hospital tank available for when a fish has a parasite or infection because medication will most likely be needed to cure it. There are a lot of reef-safe medications available, yet for those non-reef-safe meds, a hospital tank is the best to use. All you would need for a hospital tank is a 10-gallon or larger tank (remember the smaller the tank the more stress on the fish), live rock, a heater, and some power heads. You need to cycle the tank like you would your main tank and make sure it will support a fish or two living in it. Make sure the environment is stable and follow the medication dosages correctly. For more helpful information on quarantine and hospital tanks please speak with a sales associate. Are you sure you have the means to cure a sick fish?

And don't forget about that coupon at the bottom of the newsletter. Did You Know? Did you know that one of the most common mistakes made by the novice marine aquarist is topping off their aquarium from evaporation with salt water? You must top off your aquarium with FRESH water. The salt does not evaporate so as the water level decreases (from evaporation) the salt level increases. You would only use salt water if you are trying to slowly raise your salinity or if you are performing a water change. So the lesson is: top off with fresh to maintain a stable salinity and water change with salt. And don't forget to use your refractometer or hydrometer regularly to be sure your salinity is stable and consistent.

All bulbs, whether they are; fluorescent, metal halide, power compact, T5 or V.H.O., need to be replaced. The color you see when you look at a bulb is called its spectrum. All aquarium bulbs have a specific spectrum designed to mimic specific conditions. As bulbs get older the spectrum shifts and the new color the bulb produces is often not one that corals can use for photosynthesis. The corals tend to not survive as well and other problems can arise. In both reef and non-reef tanks, the aging of the bulbs usually contributes to the growth of algae that is undesirable and can make the tank look unattractive. Most bulbs need to be replaced about every eight months; however, some do not last that long while others can last longer. Just because the bulb is still functioning, it does not mean the bulb is still good. A benefit to adding your name to our store database is that we can help you track your purchases. We can look up when you last purchased your bulbs and what kind they are so it makes it easier to get the right replacement. Do you know when the last time you changed your bulbs was?
