  1. Greetings Fish Friends! Looks like some beautiful weather coming our way! While out enjoying the cool breeze and warm sun, stop in and say hi! And while you are in, take some time to browse the shop in hunt for that awesome coral or fish or invert for your tank! Find us on Facebook! Become a fan and get updated first with new stock and other important information! Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing you this weekend! ~The Marine Scene Team What's New NextReef Media Reactors are in stock! These reactors are perfect for utilizing products such as phosphate removers, carbon and denitrifying products. We have a couple different sizes available and to see one in action, check out our main display. We are currently using ROWAphos and Matrix Carbon in the MR1 Monster Media Reactor. The benefits to using a media reactor is you are actually utilizing all the media within the reactor since the water is being forced by a pump through the reactor. If using just a mesh bag filled with the media it is hard to make sure the water is really being pushed through in turn causing detritus to build up within the bag area possibly causing more harm than good. Stop in for more information about media reactors. Pink Pygmy Anthias are back in stock! These fun little Anthias prefer to be in a school of at least three and require larger tanks with heavy water flow. They make a great addition to any reef system. Also back in stock are Long Spine Cardinals. Cardinals are typically peaceful fish and should be housed with other docile fish. The Long Spine Cardinals also make great schooling fish and their colors really pop under reef lighting. Some other fish that have arrived this week include an African Flameback Angel, Coral Beauty Angels, Flame Anthias, Highfin Perchlets, Midas Blennies, Starry and Lawnmower Blennies, Azure Damsels, Royal Grammas, Firefish, Yellow Watchman Gobies paired with Tiger Pistol Shrimp, small Hippo Tangs, a Powder Blue Tang, Yellow Tangs, a smaller male Blue Jaw Trigger, Yellow Coris Wrasse, and so many more! A nice Rose Bubble Tip arrived along with some Green Bubble Tips, smaller Long Tentacle Anemones, Feather Dusters, Fighting Conchs, Sand Sifting Starfish, Tiger Pistol Shrimp, Indian Ocean Red Pistol Shrimp, tons of hermits and snails, Pink-n-Green Cucumbers, Flame Scallops, many different types of shrimps and crabs, and hundreds more! Check out our fully stocked coral tanks! Lots of beautiful pieces to choose from. We have a nice variety of frags as well as full colonies; LPS, SPS, Mushrooms, Zoanthids, Leathers, Softies, Sea Fans and more! What's On Sale Sales are good from Friday, September 10th through Saturday, September 11th. All Corals are 15% off and some are even up to 50% off! We are stocked up with some great pieces from frags to full colonies. All Salifert and Red Sea Test Kits are 15% off! These soft marine animals make a great gift for your special aquarist or an aspiring aquarist. Don't forget about our coupon at the end of our online Newsletter for more savings! Did You Know? Did you know that you may be trapping nitrates in your tank? As you know high nitrate levels can stress and even kill inverts, corals and fish. If you are struggling to get the nitrate level down in your aquarium, make sure you have enough sand sifters. If your substrate is not being sifted sufficiently you may be trapping nitrates deep down under the sand bed! To help you in your sand sifting endeavor, pick up some Nassarius Snails, a Sand Star or even a Fighting Conch. A "clean" sand bed will add to the efficiency of your biological filter, help prevent unwanted algaes and look nicer. And don't forget to rinse those sponges! If you have some sort of pre-filter sponge or felt, make sure you rinse it out regularly, a filthy sponge is a great place for nitrates to build up. Another good place for nitrates to hide is in your sump. Sometimes detritus can collect at the bottom of the sump so next time you do a water change, try cleaning out your sump to get out the excess mess. Canister filters are also a great hiding place for nitrates so make sure you clean it out regularly. Scheduling a weekly to bi-weekly 10% water change will also help to control high nitrates. Do you know how high your nitrate level is? Stop in and pick up some testing kits to help you better manage your water parameters. All test kits are 15% off this weekend!

Don't forget about our 20% off coupon at the end of our online newsletter for some extra savings! Did You Know? Did you know that live foods may not be a good diet for your fish? For those of you with large carnivores, I know its fun to throw in a few goldfish or rosy reds for your big fish to gobble up, but there may be consequences. Large carnivores can become spoiled on these live foods and refuse to eat anything else. Since fresh water feeder fish don't have the correct dietary balance of nutrition, and often carry diseases, this is an overall poor food choice to begin with. When a fish is fed only feeder fish you can expect to see a dramatic fading in their color and a huge decline in their immune system. If you have this problem, don't worry it may not be too late. There are feeding prongs; tempting foods and appetite stimulants you can try to use to train your fish to eat prepared foods again. For those of you feeding brine shrimp every day, guess what? It's like feeding your kids candy for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Yeah they love it! But they aren't getting much out of it. Especially if you are feeding live brine, beware; once the shrimp are old enough to reproduce, there is a good chance that they are carrying parasites like our old friend Ich (Cryptocaryon irritans). In this case I would recommend trying one of the irradiated frozen brine shrimp products that are supplemented with vitamins. For hose of you with delicate reef fish like butterflies and angelfish it is important that they are getting certain things in their diet. To maintain optimal health try the foods that are formulated specifically for them like San Francisco Bay Angel and Butterfly Formula, or Ocean Nutrition Pygmy Angel Formula. Next time you stop by, ask a sales associate to recommend an appropriate diet for your specific fish.

Did You Know? Did you know that if you have a sufficient amount of live rock in your aquarium you do not need bio-balls, bio-wheels, or other un-natural bio-media? Live rock is a natural biological filtration, given it has proper circulation. The waste produced in an aquarium is only capable of feeding a set amount of beneficial bacteria and if you use other forms of bio-media, it reduces the effectiveness of the live rock. For example if you are using a bio-wheel in conjunction with your live rock, the bacteria culture on the bio-wheel will compete with your live rock to break down the wastes. Bacteria in an oxygen rich environment break down ammonia wastes into nitrite, a toxic compound for tank inhabitants. Nitrite further breaks down into nitrate, a much less harmful compound in low quantities. However, as nitrate levels build up in the tank over time, especially in artificial systems, they also become quite toxic. The additional anaerobic bacteria that are cultured in live rock, but not well in artificial biological materials, help to break nitrates down into nitrogen gas and remove it from the systems. Are you sure you have appropriate filtration for your tank?
  4. Greetings Fish Friends! A busy week it has been and it's getting busier! Great to see many new faces and definitely many familiar faces! We want to thank you all for your support! We are here to help educate you, our customer, and to provide top of the line equipment and livestock. Thanks for making us a regular stop amongst your daily routines! Find us on Facebook! Become a fan and get updated first with new stock and other important information! Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing you this weekend! ~The Marine Scene Team What's New If you haven't been here in a while, you have to come by! Our 260 display is growing beautifully and we have even started fragging out certain corals that just seem to be taking off in there! It's hard to believe that the tank has been set up and running for a year and a half so far! And man has it come a long way! Check out our pictures on Facebook! I'll spare you some reading and just mention some cool fish we currently have in stock. The Blue Jaw Triggerfish, not very common to find, is available and doing well! It is a male so has the brilliant coloration and is one of the most reef safe triggers around. Typically will not bother coral but may go after some crustaceans and very small fish, otherwise a great addition to a larger reef system. The Majestic Angel we have is gorgeous! She isn't shy at all, swims around looking for food and eats very well. They are not ideal for a reef system as they will nip at some corals and even clams but make a great colorful addition to a fish only system. A beautiful Marine Betta is in stock and makes a striking addition to any reef or fish only system. They are very peaceful and a bit shy yet adapt quite well. The one we have is eating and checking things out but is still a bit shy. Check out the Dragonface Pipefish we have in stock again. These little guys don't have a swim bladder so are going to 'snake' around the tank in search for foods. They are known to eat the parasitic Red Bugs off of SPS coral and do well in an established reef. Many other awesome fish and invertebrates are available so stop in and check out what we have! A coral shipment is expected in Friday afternoon so our tanks will be overflowing again. We currently have a great variety of corals available and they are all on sale! Photos Link... What's On Sale Sales are good from Friday, July 23rd through Saturday, July 24th. ALL Corals are 20% off! But the sale doesn't stop there! Buy any TWO Corals (already at 20% off), and take 50% off a Mushroom or Zoanthid colony! We have a great variety of over 500 beautiful, healthy corals for our mix-n-match sale. If you purchase any two corals already discounted, you get your choice of a Mushroom or Zoanthid rock at 50% off! Otherwise all Mushrooms and Zoanthids purchased individually are 20% off. No limit on coral purchases! All Zoanthid Frags and Nano Corals are now only $10 each! Need to replace or add any powerheads? Maxi Jet 600, 900 and 1200 powerheads are on sale! Maxi Jet 600 powerheads are on sale for $21.59 (was $31.99), Maxi Jet 900 powerheads are on sale for $24.29 (was $34.99), and Maxi Jet 1200 powerheads are on sale for $26.09 (was 42.99). These pumps are great for adding circulation to your aquarium and are the best choice to use with a wave maker strip. There are even magnetic powerhead holders available if you don't want to keep replacing those suction cups! Kent Garlic Xtreme 1oz bottles are now only $11.99 (was $15.99). Garlic Xtreme is an all natural food additive for all fishes. The natural attractant helps finicky eaters accept prepared foods and it also contains high-quality marine sources of protein with essential vitamins and minerals. Garlic Xtreme will also help prevent parasites such as marine Ich. The Natural Wave/Timer Power strip regularly priced at $94.99 is on sale for $50.39. This power strip contains three adjustable cycled outlets in timing patterns from 20 seconds to three minutes. It also has three standard outlets. Great to use with Maxi Jet powerheads to create that natural current for your reef. You will notice your corals seem much happier with an ever-changing flow pattern! A used Red Sea MAX 34 gallon is for sale at $350. This is the silver model and is in good condition. Will need the bulbs replaced and a little cleaning. 20% Off Fish coupon, go to our online newsletter and print it out for the savings! Did You Know? Did you know that it is beneficial to have your powerheads on a wave maker? Creating different cycles with your powerheads allows a more natural current in any aquarium, especially a reef. The ocean does not have one constant direction of flow so having one in your aquarium will not allow the corals to be as happy as they can be. Different movement of water allows the corals to release the oxygen buildup from the microalgae's living inside them and also helps remove any dead spots in the aquarium preventing nuisance algae blooms. Food and nutrients also will be able move more freely throughout the water column providing your rock, corals, sand and invertebrates a natural feeding behavior. With the use of a wave maker, you will notice your corals growing faster and healthier. Don't forget that the Natural Wave/Timer Powerstrip and Maxi Jet powerheads are on sale this weekend! A used Red Sea MAX 34 gallon is for sale at $375. This is the silver model and is in good condition. Will need the bulbs replaced and a little cleaning. Don't forget about the sale coupon at the end of our online newsletter! Did You Know? Did you know that most fish foods do not have sufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals? Dry, frozen and even some live foods loose most of their vitamins and minerals thru the packaging process. We carry a variety of food additives to replenish your foods with the vitamins and minerals needed to keep your aquarium fishes healthy and happy. Garlic Xtreme, Garlic Guard, Zoe, Zoecon, Selcon, AminOmega, Vita-Chem, Vitamarine-C are a few food additives we keep on our shelves. Supplementing your fishes foods with a combination of these additives will help keep them healthy and prevent parasites such as marine Ich. For those of you with Tangs, feeding them with various types of seaweed soaked in vitamin supplements such as the Zoe, Zoecon and Garlic Xtreme should help keep them healthy and gradually bring back its color if it has dulled out. Tangs are extremely susceptible to a condition called Lateral Line Disease and after extended periods of time in captivity their color begins to fade and they may develop a pale like extending from their eyes to their tail. The jury is still out on why exactly this occurs yet we do know that it is nutrition and tank size related. Make sure all your fishes are getting a good nutrition based diet by adding these vitamins and minerals to your feeding regiment. Don't forget, Kent Garlic Xtreme, Zoe and Zoecon are on sale this weekend!

Don't forget to read all the way, there is a coupon at the end of the newsletter for extra savings! Did You Know? Did you know that corals can "fight" with each other? Most corals have some means of aggression or defense. Several large polyp stony corals are able to form "sweeper" tentacles that can reach up to a foot away to sting a competing coral. A few examples are Bubble, Galaxy, and Brain corals. Hammer, Frogspawn and Torch corals are also very strong stingers. Soft corals such as leathers will secretly release toxic compounds into the water around them to ward off encrusting or competing corals. So the next time you purchase a coral be aware of its aggression level and place it in the tank accordingly. Try to prevent corals from touching each other. As you well know, we all need our own personal space. Is your reef tank really a coral battle ground?

This was the display we had set up full of Green Star Polyps and for our Seahorses. The tank is in great shape just may need the bulbs replaced, otherwise it is in good condition. 15% off Frozen food only with coupon off our website! Did You Know? All bulbs, whether they are; fluorescent, metal halide, power compact, T5 or V.H.O., need to be replaced. The color you see when you look at a bulb is called its spectrum. All aquarium bulbs have a specific spectrum designed to mimic specific conditions. As bulbs get older the spectrum shifts and the new color the bulb produces is often not one that corals can use for photosynthesis. The corals tend to not survive as well and other problems can arise. In both reef and non-reef tanks, the aging of the bulbs usually contributes to the growth of algae that is undesirable and can make the tank look unattractive. Most bulbs need to be replaced about every eight months; however, some do not last that long while others can last longer. Just because the bulb is still functioning, it does not mean the bulb is still good. A benefit to adding your name to our store database is that we can help you track your purchases. We can look up when you last purchased your bulbs and what kind they are so it makes it easier to get the right replacement. Do you know when the last time you changed your bulbs was?

Did you know that a refugium is beneficial to both a reef and fish only systems? A refugium can be of any size and are nothing more than a refuge from predation, which is connected to a larger tank with shared filtration. A refugium is used to grow algae for Natural Nitrate Reduction (NNR), isolate sensitive critters such as Seahorses or to hold/raise food such as copepods and amphipods for the main tank. Most refugia are used for NNR using macroalgaes and caulerpa to feed off the nitrates in the main tank. This also provides hiding and breeding areas for your copepods and amphipods which are a great live food source for picky eaters such as Dragonets. Don't forget to start dosing Iron and Bromide to keep your algae's healthy and growing. You can either hang a refugium off your main tank or plumb it into the sump system underneath the tank for a cleaner look. Some refugia even are designed now with a skimmer attached and a small light strip. For more information on a refugium and how it works, please stop by and check with one of our sales associates.

Did you know that many corals can and will eat food? Most corals get their energy from their photosynthetic algae living inside of them; however, many of them do much better when supplemented with foods. There are quite a few different types of food that are available for corals, mainly consisting of phytoplankton and zooplankton. DT's Live Marine Phytoplankton is a great food for many corals and even invertebrates such as feather dusters and sponges. There is also Oyster Eggs, a highly nutritional zooplankton replacement. Cyclopeeze Freezer Bars are a great source of zooplankton and Sun Corals and Gorgonians especially love this food! Hikari makes frozen cubed Rotifers which are great for feeding fry and corals. This is another natural food for corals as it is frozen baby brine shrimp which are natural pray for all sorts of corals, inverts and fish. Golden Pearls is a very fine micron which mimic live brine shrimp nauplii. Fish seem to love this food almost more than the corals do! Reef Chili and Coral Frenzy: Ultimate Coral Food both are a fine micron, all natural food which contain all sorts of spray-dried phytoplankton's, zooplanktons, oyster eggs and many others which will feed corals, clams, sponges, feather dusters and many other organisms in your aquarium. Tigger Pods and AquaPods: Live Copepods are also a live food for feeding corals and picky fish. Kent also makes a wide variety of phytoplankton and zooplankton mixtures that work great to enhance the health, color and size of your corals, and they do not have to be refrigerated like DT's. While most corals will survive in captivity without feeding, the whole reef tank seems to completely come to life with it. Are your corals just surviving, or are they thriving?

Did you know that if you are making plans to leave town for the summer or even holidays it is a good idea to have a friend or neighbor stop by to feed your fish and check on your tank? While the idea of an automatic feeder may seem convenient and appealing, more often than not they do more harm then good. The flake or pellet food can be used with the automatic feeders are high in phosphates and can cause problems with water quality. Having a friend or neighbor stop by also allows your tank to remain on its normal dosing schedule and it's always a good idea to have a pair of eyes to check everything over. Afraid your "sitter" might overfeed or overdose? Make their job easy and use Ziploc bags to portion out the food for each day making sure to supplement it with any vitamins you are using. Create an easy to follow dosing chart explaining how much to dose, what to dose and on what days to dose. Put away any other foods or supplement so make sure nothing is overfed or overdosed and of course be sure to have plenty of fresh water available for water evaporation! Make a check list and leave emergency phone numbers to help out your tank sitter and have a great vacation!

Did you know that False Percula Clowns are not at all a Percula? False Percula Clowns are actually Ocellaris yet are commonly known as the False Percula because they look almost identical to the True Percula Clownfish. As juveniles, the Ocellaris and the Percula look very similar with orange bodies marked with white bands outlined in black. The False or Ocellaris tends to be the more popular among many aquarists due to their brilliant orange and white colorations. The True or Percula clowns grow to have a paler orange and the black outline of the white bands gets thicker almost taking over the entire midsection of the clown. True Perculas are more prized for the amount of black they have on them along with the pattern of their stripes as they can have quite distinctive patterns with names such as Platinum, Picasso and Snowflake. You can also tell the difference if you have the patience enough to count the dorsal spines as the False, or Ocellaris, has 11 spines and the True, or Percula, has only 10. So next time you are walking around the store wondering why some are called False and some True, you will know the answer. Do you know which kind of clownfish you have? Here are some coral pictures: and here are some fish and invert pictures:
  12. Greetings Fish Friends! We have been having some amazing weather this week! I hope everyone has been able to get outside and enjoy the sun and cool breeze. Even with a rainy day, this week has been great for us too. The rain brought us in a great shipment of coral, lots of new fish and inverts and all of you! It's been great seeing faces we haven't seen in a while; make sure and stop in frequently as each week we get new and fun stuff in! Continue enjoying the weather and make sure to add us to your shopping schedule this weekend! The Marine Scene has a Facebook page! Become a fan and get updated first with new stock and other important information! Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing you this weekend! ~The Marine Scene Team What's New Over 100 new corals arrived this week! We received a great selection of some beautiful pieces including Acropora, Montipora, Porites, Mycedium, Pectinia, Plates, Long Tentacle Plates, Tooths/Cynarinas, Lobophyllias, Symphyllias, Scolymias, Trumpets/Caulastreas, Favia Brains, Trachyphyllia Brains, Torches, Frogspawns, Hammers, Bubbles, Orange and Yellow Suns/Tubastreas, Pagodas, Scrolls, Toadstool Leathers, Yellow Leathers, Colt Leathers, Orange Zoanthids, Green Zoanthids, Yellow Polyps, Pink Zoanthids, Brown Button Polyps, Striped Mushrooms, Marbled Mushrooms, Frilly Rhodactus Mushrooms, Blue Mushrooms, Ricordea yuma, Spotted Mushrooms, Neon Green Mushrooms, Blue Xenia, Green Star Polyps, Daisy Polyps, and many more! With over 500 corals in stock, over half are priced within the $30 to $50 range. And these aren't just frags or small pieces but full colonies! A Marine Betta came in this week. Marine Bettas are a beautiful, peaceful and shy fish. At first they tend to hide a bit but eventually get used to their surroundings and owner and emerge from the rockwork. They mimic an eel in the way they move and will eat small fish and shrimp. Otherwise these fish make great additions to a larger peaceful reef tank. Pink Pygmy Antias are new in stock. These Anthias stay smaller than many other Anthias so can be kept in a smaller yet still large system. They are a great schoolig fish and will not harm any corals or invertebrates and are peaceful with other tankmates. Banded Pipefish and Dragonface Pipefish are back in stock. The Banded Pipefish are very peaceful, social species and prefer to be kept in pairs or schools. The Dragonface Pipefish is also a very peaceful fish. They do not swim, yet travel along the rockwork in the aquarium by sliding its body similar to a snake. They can be kept in high flow systems like Acropora and are actually known to eat the parasitic Red Bugs that infest many SPS corals. Pipefish are a bit difficult to keep due to their picky eating behavior so supplementing the tank with TiggerPods and Cyclopeeze is a necessity. Over time, they become accustomed to eating frozen foods like the Nutramar Ova, Cyclopeeze and even Mysis. A Four Line Wrasse also is back in stock. This pretty wrasse looks very much like the Six Line Wrasse with a slightly different color patter and of course less lines/stripes. They stay fairly small and will eat parasitic snails, flatworms and Nudibranchs in a reef tank. A beautiful Desjardini Sailfin Tang also came in this week. The Desjardini Tang is very similar to the Sailfin Tang; it will get very large and needs lots of algae to graze upon. These tangs will do best in a larger fish only or reef tank. Along with those entioned we got in lots more! Yellow Coris Wrasse, Radiant Wrasse, Yellow Tangs, Sailfin Tangs, Purple Tangs, Yellow Mimic Tang, Kole Tangs, small Hippo Tangs, Valentine Puffer, Porcupine Puffer, Purple Dottybacks, Royal Grammas, Orchid Dottybacks, Neon/Arabian Dottybacks, Bicolor Goatfish, Volitan Lionfish, Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish, Candy Hogs, Spotted Hawkfish, Longnose and Flame Hawkfish, Yashia Gobies, Hi Fin Banded Gobies, Yellow Watchman Gobies, Red Head Gobies, Randall's Shrimp Goby, Pearly Jawfish, Purple Firefish, Helfrichi Firefish, Orange Spotted Sleeper Gobies, Green Banded Gobies, Engineer Gobies, Green and Yellow Clown Gobies, Scooter Dragonets, Red Scooter Dragonets, Mandarin Dragonets, Fiji Blue Devil Damsel, Green Chromis, Azure Damsels, Yellowtail Blue Damsels, True and False Percula Clowns, Mated Pairs of False Percula Clowns and Maroon Clowns, Pink Skunk Clowns, Clarkii Clowns, Cinnamon Clowns, Australian Clowns, Pajama Cardinals, Long Spine Cardinals, Orange Striped Cardinals, Tail Spot Blennies, Starry Blennies, Midas Blennies, Lawnmower Blennies, Blue & Yellow Blenny, Bicolor Blennies, a female Swallowtail Angel, Pygmy Angels, Flame Angels, Coral Beauty Angels and many others are currently in stock! We are fully stocked up on invertebrates this week after being cleaned out last week. Turbo Snails, Margarita Snails, Astrea Snails, Ninja Star Astrea Snails, Nassarius Snails, Trochus Snails, Blue Leg Hermits, Burgundy Hermits, Scarlet Reef Hermits, Halloween Hermits, Electric Blue Knuckle Hermits, Rose Anemones, Purple Long Tentacle Anemones, Green Bubble Tip Anemones, Pink & Green Cucumbers, Blue Linkia Stars, Coco Worms, Feather Dusters, Skunk Cleaner Shrimp, Peppermint Shrimp, Fire Shrimp, Tiger Pistol Shrimp, Sexy Anemone Shrimp, Coral Banded Shrimp, Chestnut Algae Cowries, Mithrax Crabs, Sally Lightfoot Crabs and hundreds more fun invertebrates are also in stock looking for a new home! Did You Know? Did you know that The Marine Scene only carries a specific selection of fish? The reason behind this is there are lots of fish species out there that are not appropriate to keep in captivity; some get way to large, lots are endangered, most will not eat prepared foods or have a specific diet which can be very hard to provide in captivity, and lots more reasons. We do still carry a very wide selection of fish and just because you don't see it here, does not mean we don't stock it. Sometimes we don't always stock a certain fish because we don't sell them often enough. If you are looking for a specific fish species we most likely will be able to order it for you. The Marine Scene also has a store wish list for those items you do not see here very often or end up selling out of before you get here. You can even check on our website for the fish we have stocked at least once here and place a request to get a particular fish (or any other item) in stock for you.

Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing you this weekend! ~The Marine Scene What's New We have some new fish to our stocking list! Some Pink and Purple Pygmy Anthias (Luzonichthys waitei) arrived. Quite shy at the moment but very low priced compared to many other Anthias and do well in a smaller high flow system. A very cool Ember Blenny (Cirripectes stigmaticus) is another newbie and is doing great. Similar looking to a Lawnmower Blenny yet larger and with brilliant colors this fish would make a great addition to any peaceful to semi-aggressive fish only or reef system. For those of you with little nano tanks, we got in a very cute Mini Dart Goby (Aioliops megastigma). These guys are truly 'mini' yet are quite colorful and not very shy at all. Another newer fish to our store is the Forktail Blenny (Meiacanthus atrodorsalis). Similar to the Black-lined Fangblenny or the Red Sea Mimic Blenny, these open water column swimmers make a nice addition to any peaceful aquarium, smaller or larger, and have a very pretty coloration of pale blues and yellows. Along with those few newer fishes we received some Golden Blennies, a beautiful female Swallowtail Angel, Longspine Cardinals (great schooling fish), Orange Striped Cardinals, Pajama Cardinals, Bangaii Cardinals, Blue Damsels, Firefish, Purple Firefish, Mandarin Dragonets, Yellow Watchman Gobies, Green Banded Gobies, Randall's Shrimp Gobies, Yashia Gobies, Sixline Wrasse, Radiant Wrasse, and some Kelloggii Seahorses. Of course we have a great selection of many more fish in stock including more Angels, Tangs, Blennies, Gobies, Hawkfish, Lionfish, Clownfish, Damselfish, Dottybacks, Rabbitfish, and Wrasse. Flame Scallops are in stock and are a striking bold red. Fairly easy to keep, they don't require any reef lighting and do best in a low light environment with phytoplankton feedings. We have a beautiful small Blue Maxima Clam and a fairly large Crocea Clam in stock. Green Bubble Tip Anemones, Condylactus Anemones, Flower Anemones, Red Fromia Starfish, Sand Sifting Starfish, Fighting Conchs, Sally Lightfoot Crabs, Pom Pom/Boxing Crabs, Skunk Cleaner Shrimp, Fire Shrimp, Peppermint Shrimp, tons of snails and hermits, and so many more! Did You Know? Did you know that it is important to test your water regularly? A well-established tank's water chemistry still changes. Alkalinity, p.H., and calcium are always dropping in a tank, while nitrate and salinity tend to be always increasing. Regular water changes should fix this; however, without knowing the measurements, you might not be doing enough water changes and might need to add buffers to correct the swings. The Marine Scene carries about four different brands of test kits and even has some digital instruments. Not checking the water parameters could lead to fish and coral loss as well as algae blooms, so it is important to check these at least once a week. At The Marine Scene we check our water weekly to make sure if there are any changes in the water chemistry we can fix them before they really become problems. Do you know what your water parameters are?

Spring Cleaning Time! The weather is getting nicer and we all want to be outdoors fixing up the yard, the house and just enjoying the sun. But don't forget about your tank! This is a great time to stock up on supplies to get your tank all cleaned up so you can spend more time during the spring and summer enjoying the outdoors! Minor things that can be done to spruce up the appearance of your aquarium are: pull out empty shells from the sand bed and front of the tank, sift with a net or use a siphon to remove the top layer of substrate and replace with a new layer (really brightens up the tank), give all reachable insides a good scrubbing, cleaning off your pumps and replacing suction cups or upgrading to the magnetic holders, replacing old filter sponges or felt pads, cleaning out your sump of detritus build-up (a big nitrate and phosphate source) and to replenish hermits, snails and other critters for more natural algae control. All Kent Pro Scraper Products are 15% off! Pro Scrapers are great for cleaning hard, encrusting algae's such as coralline off glass and/or acrylic. The scrapers and scrubbers include the replacement plastic and steel blades, short and long handle plastic and steel scrapers, Aqua Mop, utility packs and replacement pads. Algae Scrapers Algae Pads are 15% off. These are scrubber pads for either acrylic or glass and some are attached to long handles making it easier to scrub down the front and sides of your aquarium. Gravel Vacuum Siphon Hoses and Nets are 15% off. You should never have to actually vacuum your substrate but these hoses are good to help remove the top layer. After a while the substrate can become dull looking or even get built up with some algae's or larger chunks of shells and corals. You can even use a net to help sift out the top layer and either replace with a new layer of sand or let your sand sifters stir it all up. MagFloat and Twister Magnets are 15% off. Stop getting your hands wet by scrubbing the inside of the glass with a sponge! Use a magnet; they are great for cleaning both the inside and outside of your glass aquarium. MagFloat Magnets even float if you accidently pull the outside piece off and are available in acrylic safe too! Don't forget while you think you might have clean hands, oils and soaps remain and can pollute your tank. AquaGloves are designed for aquarium use and are 28" long for those deep, hard-to-reach places (or those of you who have nice long arms)! AquaGloves are on sale at 15% off! And of course when you are finished cleaning the inside of your aquarium, don't forget about the outside! And remember DO NOT USE WINDEX! We carry some great, aquarium safe polishes for the outside of your glass or acrylic tanks. Acrylic Aquarium Cleaner and Glass Aquarium Cleaner are both 15% off! AragAlive Fiji Pink and Indo-Pacific Black 20lb bags originally priced at $39.99 are now $33.99 each. Carib Sea substrates and live sands are a perfect sand bed for any reef or fish only system. Did you know that seawater is composed of 11 major ions? These constituents make up 99.9% of the dissolved substances in seawater. They are: chloride, sulfate, bicarbonate, bromide, borate, fluoride, sodium, magnesium, calcium, potassium, and strontium. While the total amount of these ions can vary locally, i.e., the salinity of the water can be different depending on location, the relative proportions of these ions remain consistent. This is important because organisms such as corals are adapted to a specific set of chemical conditions in the seawater and that is why the maintenance of any marine aquarium involves water parameter testing and adjusting the chemical conditions of the water in the tank by doing water changes or adding trace elements. There are many different synthetic salts good for fish only aquariums but only few synthetic salts, including Reef Crystals, Instant Ocean and Tropic Marin, are suitable for aquariums with sessile invertebrates. Do you know if the ion levels in your tank are suitable for your habitants? For more information on components of seawater read "Natural Reef Aquariums: Simplified Approaches to Creating Living Saltwater Microcosms" by John H. Tullock.

Most of the fish that we keep in our home aquariums would live anywhere from one year to twenty five years in the wild. Some fish may live even longer than average in captivity due to the absence of predators and food competition. In order to raise your fish into its old age you will need to provide ideal environmental conditions for it. This includes good and stable water quality, little to no stress, a variety of food and vitamins, and appropriate aquarium size. Proper maintenance and care will help you help your fish live a long, healthy and happy life. Do you know how old your fish are?

Did you know that it is not safe to clean the outside of your aquarium with Windex or any other chemical based product? A common mistake made by beginners. Windex is full of ammonia and as you know ammonia is the last thing we need in our tanks! One of the best ways to clean the exterior glass or acrylic with is just plain old water. Squeegees are helpful in this endeavor. There are also great cleaner polishes that work great and all you need is just a dry soft cloth to help buff the polish. It takes a couple minutes and your aquarium is spot and streak free. Check out the Acrylic and Glass Aquarium Cleaners we have available, both of which are on sale!

Did you know that with proper precautions it is safe to handle corals? Many beginners watch me reach in and pick up anemones and corals and exclaim, "doesn't that sting"? The answer is yes, and no. In the case of anemones, yes they do sting but our skin is too thick for us to actually feel it and in some cases the anemone seems to just "stick" to your hand. Many corals don't even have stinging cells but for those that do, it is OK to touch them, with caution. There are also a few corals which are not often found in the hobby that can put out a painful sting such as Fire coral. Palythoa Polyps have a palytoxin so care must be used when handling these corals. It varies from person to person and those with more sensitive skin may have a different reaction to individual coral. When handling live coral or anemones, you of course have to handle or touch the live coral carefully as to not damage the tissue of the coral. When placing the coral in your aquarium, be careful how it is placed within the live rock or sand and make sure it is in the right lighting and flow requirements. For more information on the proper way to handle corals, stop in and speak with one of our sales associates.

Did you know that Feather Dusters are actually worms? A Feather Duster is a Tube Worm that uses its feather-like appendage for food capture. A Feather Duster can "throw" its feather head when stressed. This does not mean that the worm inside is dead because the tube worm can grow its feather back slowly over a couple weeks. However, keep in mind the worm will have to survive without food until its feather head begins to grow back. These worms can also "jump" their tubes, which is also usually due to stress. Once out of the protective casing of the tube, the worm has little chance of survival. It is possible for the worm to form a new tube but it's always a race to do it before hermit crabs or some other critter starts picking on it!

Products include live sand boosters, live rock boosters, coralline algae boosters, coral foods and lots more great supplements to choose from to make your tank thrive. Did You Know? Did you know that all clownfish are born unsexed with no stripes and then undergo transformation into juvenile males with the beginning signs of adult coloration? The juvenile clowns are non- reproductive until they become adult males or females. A juvenile clown only becomes a mature adult male or female if they are the senior fish in the group or pairing. The more aggressive, dominant of the clowns will then transform into a female and the less aggressive, less dominant clown will become the adult male. The male-to-female switch is called protandrous hermaphroditism. The female is the largest and assumes the role of the protector, charging at trespassers that infringe upon her territory (including the aquarists hands and cleaning devices). Keeping only one or two clownfish in an aquarium is best. If you have one already, it has most likely become a mature, adult female and if it is quite large, it will most likely accept a small male as her mate. Purchasing two juvenile male clowns will result in one becoming the dominant female and the other the dominant male. In the wild, non-reproductive juvenile clownfish seek a new home in the tentacles of a host anemone. If the juvenile attempts to settle into a sea anemone already occupied by other clownfish, the newcomer is either chased away, or if there is a vacancy, it takes a position of the lowest member of the "household". A typical clownfish society consists of one mature female, one mature male, and often a few adolescents. The dominant male and female pair maintain their role as the larger and only sexually mature adults in the group. Juveniles that join a male- female pair develop only to the adolescent stage and remain so, possibly for life, pending change in their social group. If disaster befalls the dominant female, the dominant male assumes her role and changes into a functional female and the strongest adolescent male assumes the role of the dominant male. If disaster befalls the dominant male, the strongest adolescent male assumes the role and changes into a functional dominant male. This cycle will continue or adolescents can move on to find a new host anemone that is not occupied and start their own "family". Do you know which of your clowns is male and which is female?

Carbon removes organic pollutants, stains, and extreme toxic gasses in both marine and freshwater aquariums and really clarifies the water. A large selection of corals are on sale from 10% off up to 50% off. This sale includes the corals we already had in stock before these newest shipments. There are hundreds to choose from! No new corals will be on sale but they will be priced to move! A great selection is out there for every type of coral lover! Did You Know? Did you know that over time, organic waste, silicates, phosphates and many other unwanted impurities are built up in an aquarium? Not removing them can be harmful to the health of your fish, corals and invertebrates and can even create algae issues. There are many ways of removing these impurities safely. Water changes using RO/DI water, carbon and phosphate removers are the main effective way to remove these unwanted impurities. At The Marine Scene we carry a variety of different medias used to remove organic waste, phosphates, silicates, toxic metals, color impurities, acids and many others. We also carry the appropriate media bags and reactor canisters to properly use the media. Seachem SeaGel is a very good product that is a combination of both carbon and phosphate removers to safely and effectively remove the majority of unwanted impurities leaving your aquarium looking crystal clear and removing food sources of nuisance algae's. Make sure to remember when using any form of carbon to not use it for more than a week. Carbon is utilized within a week and if left in the aquarium can start leeching out organic wastes back into the tank in high concentrations. It is best to use carbon for 3-5 days each month to keep up with the removal of those unwanted impurities. Are you using carbon and phosphate removers and if so, are you using them properly? Stop in and speak with a sales associate to get more information on the different types of media we carry and their appropriate usage. And don't forget Kent Reef Carbon is on sale this weekend!

True Perculas are more prized for the amount of black they have on them along with the pattern of their stripes as they can have quite distinctive patterns with names such as Picasso and Snowflake. You can also tell the difference if you have the patience enough to count the dorsal spines as the False or Ocellaris has 11 spines and the True or Percula has only 10. So next time you are walking around the store wondering why some are called False and some True, you will know the answer. Do you know which kind of clownfish you have?

That is a great deal for some nice looking rock; practically cured already this rock has all sorts of shapes and sizes, is lighter weight than Fiji and has lots of life on/in it. Eclipse filter cartridges are 50% off. These replacement filter cartridges are for the Eclipse Systems 3, 5 Corner, 6 and 12 as well as the System 2 and 3. Most of these filter cartridges can be used with the Oceanic BioCubes and even the CUSA AquaPods, though the cartridges may be slightly larger or smaller. Good for both saltwater and freshwater setups! Did You Know? Do you know the difference between Brine and Mysis shrimps? Fish love both of them but only one of them has real nutritional value. Brine shrimp are basically just exoskeleton that must taste good but it isn't doing much for the health of your fish. Mysis shrimp are much better for the fish over all and they seem to love it. Be careful when feeding Brine, fish will actually become spoiled on it and begin refusing all other foods. If you have this problem already there are vitamin additives I would recommend adding to the Brine shrimp to increase its nutritional value. Even many picky eaters will accept Mysis so consider making the switch. Don't forget, this weekend our frozen P.E. Mysis shrimp will be on sale.
