  1. Your frogspawn growing next to each other should be fine.
  2. Some soft coral also exude compounds that will inhibit the growth of SPS coral around them (I read that somewhere long ago and cannot remember where I got it). I like having Xenia in my tank because my clowns have hosted it and that keeps them from beating my hammer and frogspawn to death. Also when it pulses it is mesmerizing. Just keep it on its own island and you should be fine; if isolated it will not be able to spread other than by dropping heads which you will be able to control without problems.
  3. Also, if you intend to stay in the reef hobby look at joining RASOC (Reef Aquarium Society of Charlotte) and get on the forums at carolinafishtalk.com. Both are active groups of good people.
  4. I spent some time in Yuma. We were there for a month doing some training with the air wing guys. That was when I realized that cacti are projectile weapons when near a helo landing zone (they get hurled into the air from the force of the rotors). I had one go through my leather combat boot and lodge itself 1/4 of an inch into the meat of my foot (right at the arch). Talk about PAIN! Lake Norman is a very pretty place you are going to love it. Be prepared that traffic around the area (looking at you I-77) gets pretty congested during the work rush, when the Panthers play, and for NASCAR. Other than that it is a really good place to be.
  5. Are you not allowed to keep hard coral, or collect them. I am confused.
  6. Yeah, they can keep this. To me the building, learning, and maintenance are most of the fun in having a tank.
  7. Those look more like Anthelia to me rather than Xenia. All the Xenia I have seen has multiple heads per stalk. Either way, you should be able to peel the "mat" off the rock. Get a razorblade under it and once started they usually peel off with no problem. In my tank the Xenia lose to my palys so they can act as a natural barrier for the Xenia. However, in my experience the best method of control is to isolate them (Xenia) as they can spread very quickly.
  8. I would say that you have enough for that mix. The acros may not color up as nice as if they were under 300 PAR, but they should grow. Will you be feeding the corals as well?
  9. So, I was taking my trash out last week and I noticed some glass sitting near the dumpster. As I got closer I instantly realized I was staring at a 20 long and a 10g! I am sure not many people get as excited as we reefers do when we find free aquariums, but needless to say I was happier with this find than I would have been if there was a $100 bill sitting there. I filled both tanks with water and gave them a good scrubbing and NO LEAKS! The problem is that they must have been used for reptiles or something because the 10g has a distinct animal poop smell that I have been unable to get rid of. I tried bleach and water overnight and, while it looks clean, the smell is still present. The 20g cleaned up well and is as good as a new tank. I really want to use the 10g as a QT for new corals and fish, but I don’t want to take the chance that there are some nasty organics still present which are causing the smell and may affect the livestock put in for QT. Does anyone have any advice (other than bleach and water) for cleaning what seems to have been a reptile tank? Thanks!
  10. Are these readings done without water in the tank, or is that an old picture?
  11. This is an older article, but I thought the topic was an interesting one. Hopefully this is not a repost. http://reefbuilders.com/2011/12/05/acropora-phosphate-growth/
  12. Just so I am clear when thinking through this, your tank is drilled, but has no overflow yet? I would also upgrade the sump to something bigger than a 10g. You will find it hard to fit equipment in there. I tried it on a 20g DT and it filled up really quickly. Also, when looking for a sump go with a long footprint over a high. This will allow you more room for the skimmer, heater, return, etc...
  13. I think you will be good to go.
  14. I second the advice to do a water change right after. Also, this depends on how long you have had your tank up and running. If it was set up last month I doubt you will have any problems.
  15. I bet those people never emptied a skimmer cup before If they did, I doubt they would be playing in the foam.

  17. Also I have had the magnets split which will reduce the flow or stop it all together. Check that out too.
  18. I ran 4 of the evo 750s in my 75g and they do sometimes start backwards. The company has some type of fix which should have been on yours if you bought new (mine are 3 years old). Try unplugging it and plugging it back in. If it is running in reverse you should be able tonfix it that way. I had mine on a reefkeeper and they would sometimes do that when used on a timer.
  19. I am very sorry to hear about this. You have a beautiful tank, hopefully they will pull through!
  20. I wish this forum had a "like" button.
  21. Also, just to be clear Bridgelux is a US company that manufactures in the US.
  22. Only thing I see in that video is more light coverage on the Chinese side.
  23. It isn't the razor, but I saw a guy selling this setup on another forum and thought you may be interested: Maxspect Mazzara P LED systems http://www.carolinafishtalk.com/forum/sale-wtb-trade/47650-fs-royal-exclusiv-vertex-alpha-200-maxspect-mazzara-p-led-systems.html
  24. I could live in that thing!
