  1. I was abt to say to Dave...all quality posts eh? But it applies to you too now Tom
  2. Key is keeping the hole wet as you drill IMO. I also have a ball bearing jig that makes drilling holes in glass easier as it keeps the bit from floating on startup. I got it a good while back and it certainly helps quite a bit when you need a precise hole location and particularly if you will drill a lot of holes. In the last 2 months I have drilled over 40 holes in glass tanks as we added to our fish system in the store.
  3. You just saying that cause you are only a few hundred posts away ;p
  4. Geez, that black sun coral is looking FANTASTIC!! Chris is the ultimate caretaker of sun coral and ALL coral that likes spot feeding!! Incredible.
  5. Loni, for a mat under the tank you can go to http://www.thefoamfactory.com/closedcellfoam/neoprene.html I recommend neoprene under acrylic tanks (though you have that special glass tank from me lol). In this case as your glass bottom is not an inset and is a bottom set pane neoprene will still be a good option for you. I prefer it over styrofoam/polystyrene not only for appearance, but because neoprene will rebound...not just contract like styrofoam. This makes it a better padding material under a tank. For your size tank 3/8" would be a good thickness. If you intend to only line the bottom of the tank then go with the regular half sheet. If you want to line the entire top of the stand (since its longer than the tank to your specs) then I would get the high quality as it looks cosmetically better.
  6. Clever work making the one removable side an outfacing electrical area Loni =). Will have nice easy access there! Its been so long since I last saw this build leave. I'm actually laughing at some of the pics that were taken from my garage before I got the dedicated work shop lol. I look forward to seeing your build progress....surprised there are no pics of the infamous ArtFully Acrylic Glass Tank up yet hahahahahahaha. You should see if they will somehow let you edit that main starting post to the thread so you can fix up the details since I know some of them changed way back when. Such as the fact that the tank is 36x24x18 whereas the stand is 42x24 =). It will be fun to watch! TTYL!
  7. Thanks for the review Mike! I appreciate it. The looks those basins got while they sat here a few days waiting for you . Everyone wanted to know what they were. I love the idea of the basin under the tank to protect the carpet or floors. Goodness knows most of us have seen what carpets or even worse hardwood can look like after a few years of a little saltwater here and there....ESPECIALLY if you get rid of the tank or move it lol. Oh, and I had NO IDEA the smaller basin was for the kitty litter box ROFL! Thought they were for two different water holding bins LOL!

  9. Hey everybody! I know some don't frequent the Refugium so some may not know this is out there and has been in the works for a while. We are about a week out. If you would like to come please visit the refugium and post up with who and what you would like to bring. We would love to see you all there!!! Details from the most recent post on the refugium thread are below: So far, we have the below confirmed for attending the BBQ/Pot Luck next weekend! I know there are others, I just don't have a solid pen in on them and we need to get it. So, to all who read this, since some may not visit the refugium frequently, let others that polled for 6/2 know that we are asking if they still coming . We want to be as accurate as possible with the head count, but know there will certainly be unplanned heads so we will of course try to accomodate...but I'm OCD (great when it comes to acrylic work lol) so I like to get as accurate as possible ROFL. 10. Jenn had her Blackworms with her when she came by the store Saturday. We trialed them in the lagoon tank where the Yellow Tang and Green Chromis went yum yum and chowed down...as did the Peppermints (no other fish in this tank so EVERYONE ate lol). Then we also gave some to the Calico Crab back in the invert system. At first, as they squirmed to the bottom, he didn't show any interest and did nothing while we watched. But, when we came back several minutes later there was no sign of them so he clearly became interested lol.
  11. LOL, well yeah of course....but a $4000 fish may make even the most confident aquarist begin testing compulsively again ROFL
  12. You got it....rarity/availability are the key driving factors. And yes, sometimes a contributing factor to this is catchability
  13. So you are saying IF it was younger you would? Personally, I would be a 24/7 nervous wreck having a single fish anywhere near that cost. LOL....Can you imagine....checking water parameters daily out of paranoia, spending hours on end "wrangling" and isolating any other fish that even looks at the bugger cross eyed LOL!
  14. I remember that toadstool....it's looking great Christie!
  15. Won't deter from the hobby...just deter from giant clams LOL....and they are already rare enough as it is so consider it an attempt at conservation and rebuilding the supply of giant clams for others to enjoy ROFLMAO
  16. Should change the sign stating that little fingers that touch the tank will be cut off and fed to the clam :bb: Building a bigger tank for that awesome clam will be AWESOME....can we say
  17. WOW Billy...I saw pics of that guy when you got him and had him in a Rubbermaid, but he looks even more colossal now that he is in the tank! I also see the "PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH THE AQUARIUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" sign below . Got enough exclamation points there ROFL! Having troubles already I see.......LOL! I will have to come back for a full meal soon...the tasting on soft open and the unofficial "first service" the week or two prior has left me craving for more =).
  18. Sorry to hear that =(. He was a cool looking nem in person....nice size sucker too!!
  19. If you are talking about the actual overflow boxes then the answer is it depends. If you don't want to be troubled with cleaning them, if the tank is glass and they are siliconed in place then yes, they aren't that hard to replace. You would just need a razor blade to cut them out and then use the razor blade to remove any remaining silicone left on the back of the glass. Follow that with Acetone to get off the remaining residue. Then the surface will be prepped for your new overflow boxes to go in. Once you have new overflows you would just silicone them back in place. If the tank is acrylic then you can't easily remove the overflows. They would have to be cut out as they are bonded/seamed to the back panel. This process isn't as easy but could be done with a jig saw mostly, but would leave behind likely at least an inch of the material. Therefore, new boxes would need to be a bit bigger to hide this material. If you do decide you want new boxes made you can send me a PM with dimensions and I can give you a quote. Regarding cleaning though everyone else is spot on with the vinegar soak. It works well on both glass and acrylic and would get off the majority if not all of everything you are trying to remove.
  20. Can you not remove the bulkhead and clean? Personally, I would replace the bulkheads anyway. Cheap insurance if they are old and have been sitting a while...
  21. Thank you for the kind words! Glad we were able to make things work out for your schedule and super appreciative that you were willing to take the hike from Waldorf. You certainly have a good eye for nice coral . Hope to see you again soon!
  22. It is only there temporarily...just long enough to "help" the tank cycle...then it will be taken down and put on the bathroom door where it should be
  23. I'm honored to have been one of those =). Thank the fam again for feeding me the other weekend! Love the dark sand! Did the reefbrite strips end up giving you the shimmer that you had hoped for once everything was full?
