  2. But I also added a protein skimmer to the goldfish tank this morning and it isn't doing anything. I spent $400 on it. What!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Max Ivers

  5. I have a very large 29 gallon aquarium with goldfish. The water is cloudy and some of them are dying. what can i do? Thanks, Max
  6. Mine is a model citizen and even is getting picked on by my 2 maroon clowns. They are 2" max and the trigger is 6" (male). It did try to hunt my coral banded shrimp but other than that has been awesome. Definately a good addition. ps I returned the coral banded shrimp the next day before the trigger could eat it. and it was a HUGE shrimp (4-5" across claws)
  7. I have 250ml of WM EcoBak pellets on my 55g sps dominated tank. They combined with a beast skimmer for it (RO NWB 150) keep my nitrates around 0.2 at most on a Salifert kit. Key is definitely stable parameters. Chemi-Pure elite also can help with nitrate and phosphate problems. HTH
  8. +1 to the post above, but the guy (GrimReefer) who is the main info poster in that thread has his own site with his test results of almost every bulb out there and different recommended combos here. Definitely a good read for any T5 user.
  9. Had it since Dec '10 so around 6 months, replaced my old Current 10K and Actinic stock bulbs. Growth is awesome under them, ATI really is the way to go, or Geismann (sp?) if you have the money. Both are great quality bulbs that are colorful and pack a punch.

  11. Personally for great growth and color I like my setup which is around a 16-18k look. Front to Back: ATI Blue+ ATI Purple+ ATI Aquablue Special ATI Blue+ ATI Aquablue Special ATI Blue+ HTH
  12. Sounds like I'll be buying one then! Thanks for the reply
  13. Hello, I just have a quick question about the ATO that you guys make. I'm really interested getting one as a part of the GB but I just have a few questions. 1. Does the on/off cycle make any noise like a relay on a controllers power strip that clicks when it turns on and off? I have two solid state relays on outlets 2+3 on my PC4 and they are silent, but sometimes my ATO pump (aqualifter) will stick on due to its poor power factor. Have you guys tested this ATO with an aqualifter and does it ever stick? 2. Is the relay silent? I'm looking to get this to solve my problem of hearing the switching on and off of the relay when my float switch cycles on and off on my RKE. Thanks, Max P.S. - Justin, it was really cool to meet you the other night when you brought the frags in to the store (aquarium one) I'd really love to come out and see your greenhouse sometime if it's at all possible. Thanks!
  14. Did you check your ALK? pH? Salinity? Also were the pictures taken at the same time of day? I've seen corals color up later in the day as I guess they "warm up" especially some SPS.
  15. Tagging along, I love cube tanks and yours looks great, especially the rockwork. Keep it up!
  16. Ah now I understand, I'm going for both waterproofing and maximum reflection of light into the tank. To control light leakage (since this is inwall) I'm going to probably use weatherstripping to fill any small gaps that light goes through. It's what I did on my cabinet for my 55 gal to keep the fuge light from spilling out as the tank is in my bedroom and the fuge light was on while I was asleep.
  17. Also another update...I started to measure out where I'm going to be cutting the hole in the wall! Next comes ripping out the carpet and tearing down the drywall on the "wet" side of the tank so that I can get a look at the inside of the wall. Lots of progress is going to be made in these next two weeks or so since I'm on spring break Thank you all for your interest in my project.
  18. Yeah I don't think I'm going to make any reflectors for the VHO's since they have the internal reflectors. I'm going to put the primer on any wood that is near the tank so that the moisture won't affect it too much, but I'm not going to do any sort of painting since it'll all be hidden in my fish room. What do you mean when you say you "left yours unfishied to cut down somewhat on leakage" I'm confused about what you mean.
  19. I'm pretty sure its an AGA. The sticker on the bottom (some is ripped off, its in one of the corners on the bottom) matches the one on my new AGA 120g in terms of color. The sticker is orange and says something like don't move with water inside, don't pick it up by the rim, etc. FWIW I bought the tank at Petsmart and I'm pretty sure it was their "top fin" brand? HTH
  20. Congrats on winning my tank again Sham! It's actually a 45g (48"x13"x17") so I'm not quite sure about the tempering situation. I'd personally take it to a glass shop, as they can tell whether or not it is tempered. Also on the skimmer situation, I have a Reef Octopus BH-100SS which is a HOB skimmer. I used it on this EXACT tank with great results. If you'd like I can sell it to you. Its a really good HOB skimmer especially for the money.
  21. 100 turbos seems quite excessive to me, IF they're the huge Mexican Turbos. I "rented" three to clean up a bit of hair algae in my 55 and they ran through it in a week. Unless you're growing the forbidden forest in your tank and need to do some heavy "deforestation" I wouldn't recommend more than a handful of the large Mexican turbos for an established 120. They'll die off pretty fast if you don't have tons of algae for them to eat. I would instead recommend a mix of Astreas, Nerites, Ceriths and a few dozen hermits to start. maybe a dozen nassarius wouldn't hurt either, the more diversity the better!
  22. I would try and jump on a livestock GB for getting the snails. I personally am not a fan of the sand sifting gobies (it covered a brand new fungia with a mountain of sand and killed it in 2 days, needless to say, it went back to the store) because they decide to make mountains and cause blizzards. I love my brittle starfish and he keeps my sand very clean. Plus he's awesome to watch during feeding time, he's earned the nickname "the kraken" for his wild flailing in search of a piece of food. About the nassarius snails, I have about 40 in my 55gal with a 2" sandbed and they keep it nice and clean and mixed and don't disturb anything or anyone. I would advise against too many hermits, I have about 25 mixed between blue, red and white leg hermits and they are good scavengers, but as they grow they become bulldozers with their shells. I'd recommend as much diversity as possible in terms of your CUC. Think of it this way, if you could go to a buffet, you could only eat so much and of probably one or two foods. But if you brought your friends with you, you would each eat one or two kinds of foods and you'd clear the buffet out. So I really think diversity is key in CUC's. Nerites, astrea's, blue/red leg hermits, nassarius, a brittle star (probably 2 for a 120) are my vote for the janitors. Hope this helps, Max
  23. Thanks alot of elbow grease and a few gallons of vinegar goes a long way! Also I'm not sure if I was totally clear on how I'm going to run my lighting. All 4 VHO's are going to be run as an actinic cycle and my 4x54 T5 setup is going to be run as my daylights. I may try an experiment with the cheap 4600k VHO bulbs from the big orange box as I have more than a few in my house and they're cheap to replace. I may go and look at Lowes for the sliding track, good idea. Thanks! And thanks for tagging along Thanks for the question, I actually had that question myself. Do T12 bulbs need reflectors? These seem to have internal reflectors (URI SuperActinics) but I already intended to paint the "reflector" side of the board white with Kilz 2 Primer to keep the moisture out and I figure it'll help with reflection. And the setup I posted a pic of is just a temporary setup so I could get the hang of wiring a retrofit light setup. But I appreciate the questions and I hope you'll continue to ask because I'm sure there's always something I've overlooked
