  1. Good eye! I usually take it off to clean the cup. I must have forgotten to put it back on. Does anyone drain that to another bucket? The hammer looks happy. Maybe it will split. The more the merrier! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. In the mean time, here are some pics from this morning. The hammer coral is VERY happy with lots of plump extension. Does anyone know what the bubble in the middle is? Also, here is a daytime pic of the birds nest. So much polyp extension. I ordered some coral food for the corals from aquaforest. Anxiously waiting for that the arrive. I got this monti frag and the middle seems to have died but the edges are encrusting nicely on the rock, on all sides of the plug. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. Ever since I started using the Aquaforest probiotic reef salt, my skimmer has been pulling black gunk. Good or bad? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. It is a Birds Nest SPS. It gets great extension at night. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. Tom, You are a math wiz!!! Thank you! I shall use the kitchen scale (don't tell the spouse) and shall report back!
  6. Hello, I wanted to share my progress with you folks and ask for some advice. Update: After the hair and slime algae invasion, I started using PRO Bio F from AquaForest and the algae steadily died off. At the moment, there is almost no algae on the rocks at all. I also purchased a small bucket of Aquaforest Probiotic Reef Salt since I would like to switch to that from Instant Ocean. However, the instructions on the bucket are in European units (kg/liters). Question 1: Is anyone using this salt? How much to mix a 5 gal bucket? Question 2: Lastly, I am still tinkering with my AI Primes. I like the blue heavy coloring however have no idea how much red/green or cool white to add to the mixture. Any ideas? Thanks a ton!
  7. Here is a much overdue update with pics. I got three little damsels and some corals yesterday. Started with some frags of a month, birdsnest, and trumpet. Everyone seems very happy with lots of polyp extension so far. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. UPDATE: I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! I am looking forward to Xmas, which is my fav. holiday of the season! I have started cleaning up the tank. I waited for the algae to build up and manually removed most of the algae off the rocks and glass by hand. Also vacuumed it up. I have two new inhabitants in the tank now. I rescued a sickly hippo tang from my local Petco, and got a a sailfin as well. They have been happily grazing whatever is left on the rocks. The hippo is doing so much better which makes me happy. Pics to follow.
  9. Guys, I figured out exactly what was wrong with the skimmer. A piece of the sponge in the silencer was stuck in the air tubing thus creating all the unnecessary pressure and vapor locking. I cleaned it out and now the skimmer works like a champ. Some pics. Thanks again everyone for all their help! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. the silencer is not attached because when I attach it, the pressure builds up in the cone and it overflows. When i keep it up next to the collection cup, it seems to be working fine. Any thoughts? I could order the spare parts for the The output pipe is not below water level. Per your suggestion, I might try to cut off the cylinder some and see how it goes. I will also remove the extra piping off the output tube so that there is no vapor locking. Thanks for the tips!
  11. Here are some pics of my hair algae factory Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. THANK YOU both for your quick responses. Alan, The output valve is all the way open. I have it setup as the Sicce hooked up to the skimmer cone and there is nothing attached to the output. I added an extension pipe around 4" long and added an elbow to that to silence the output as much as possible. I have the first ever model I think. Below are some pics. As you can see, the moment I bring the air intake below the collection cup level, the pressure must build up in the skimmer cone that the skimmate actually overflows. Also, since the muffler is not connected to the air-tube anymore, the skimmer runs so very loud. I hope I can tweak it somehow, and not have to get a new skimmer since I just got a new pinhead propeller for the Sicce. I appreciate your help very much! Thank you dudes!
  13. work has been absolutely crazy so as my new setup. I have been keeping up with my water changes, however MAN, those dry rocks from BRS are like PO4 factories... The HA is everywhere that light touches in the tank. My skimmer is going NUTS (I think there is something wrong with it). More pics and information coming up soon.
  14. Hey Guys, I need some help with my CS1 skimmer. It has been running for some time now and it is still going a little crazy, to the point that I cannot even place the collection cup on the skimmer since it overflows. The skimmate is very wet. I see a decent amount of bubbles in the cone and the water line in the SUMP is a little above where the cone starts. Am I doing something wrong? What is the optimal water level? Thanks, Matt
  15. Yup! Nitrates are shooting up. I am not in a hurry, still getting the hair algae here and there on the rock. I kinda want to wait until I have corraline algae all over the rock; might be testing my patience tho. When I previously asked about critters, I was thinking maybe a crab or a snail ?
  16. Today's values are: Should I start adding critters? phosphate 0.25 (API) ph 8.2 (Red Sea) alk 8 2.9meq/l (Red Sea) Ammonia 0 (Red Sea) Nitrite 1 (Red Sea) Nitrate 50 (Red Sea)
  17. Vortech pumps pulse every 10 seconds in my 29 gal and they move quite a lot water around. However, I am not sure how to replicate that with a regular pump. Maybe try 10 sec too and see what happens then move it to the display tank? Will there be rock work in front of the nozzle?
  18. I must agree with Tom here that the little suction cups almost always fail and the last thing you want is a sand storm in your tank. You could use some egg create and lots of imagination to make a shelf for it and could potentially hang it on the side of the tank. Second issue I see with that pump as a wave-maker is the size of the nozzle to provide a broad-enough current, thus it might end up blasting a spot on the rockwork with 200 gph. You could however place the pump somewhere in the tank and make a DIY flow diffuser from PVC pipes (HD has all sizes) and create some nice surface flow... Just an idea. This will also help aerate the water. Having said all of that, I must admit that I LOVE a good bargain and the challenge to make it work.
  19. Phosphates down to ~0.25 I turned off the lights for the curing process. Once the phosphates read 0, I will turn them back on. Stay tuned!
  20. I got a new QD from BRS for my old MP10. The improvement in the reduction of motor noise blew my mind! It is so quiet now and there is definitely an increase in flow. I HIGHLY recommend upgrading your old Vortech drives if you can. On another note, HA is blooming in the tank. The lights are off but there is some residual daylight that gets in (no direct sunlight) and I think it is enough for the algae to bloom. The skimmer is working 24/7 and making some good gunk, and I just made a 10gl water change to bring ammonia and phosphates down (I don't have a Phosphate test yet, should get one soon) I am also planning on introducing some Phospban to absorb the rest of the leeching from the dry rock.
  21. I am drooling at my desk looking at these pictures.
  22. I like the cave but think of the flow and deitrus collection in the rocks. Also GoT in the background, dig it! Can't wait for the new season; "the winter is ... finally here!"
