  1. This is only a problem if you use the dosing pump to pull the kalk directly. If you put the dosing pump to pull from RO/DI water reservoir then force through the reactor, the issue goes away. Good: RO/DI -> dosing pump -> Nilsen reactor -> sump Bad: RO/DI -> Nilsen reactor -> dosing pump -> sump Essentially the kalk clouds up the tubing, etc., so medical drip pumps will not see the drip.
  2. This recipe made about 16 baggies of food last time. If we need to double it, we surely can... !!! If people bring a lot of the various hard to get dry goods, we can do a run to the Korean fish market before the grinding party. We certainly should be able to have quite a copious amound of fuuudddd... s
  3. My experience tells me these young guys are rather right on this one. Time, raised calcium/alkalinity levels will both help. Coraline does not like extremely bright light and tends to get wiped out w/direct MH lighting, so I think your lighting isn't a problem at all. Patience, grasshopper... steve
  4. I couldn't take it anymore. This question has bugged me for a LONG time. The Internet provides an answer... Usage capital and capitol Seems capitol is the building itself. Otherwise, use capital. Now ya know! steve
  5. Wow. I thought it took about 2 years for clownfish to become mature and capable of full breeding. Maybe mom is just laying eggs but dad can't yet fertilize them? Super news, though. Glad they are getting along so well! Nice to hear about happy marriages these days! s
  6. Forgot to say this but it is important. All WAMAS sponsored events are non-alcoholic in nature. Soft drinks only please. This is a family event and we want everyone to get home safely! Steve
  7. PLEASE RSVP at Pool Party Planning! so we can plan accordingly! Thanks all. Looking forward to seeing everyone! The pool is a BIG one (20'x50' and 12' deep) and we have about 1/2 acre of play area/lawn. Anyone got a horseshoe set to bring? :D steve
  8. Who's coming? Please post here if you think you are coming. We need to plan body count wise... Looking forward to a nice crowd for a gorgeous Saturday... steve
  9. Recipe from last tank food party... I'll update it as we see who is bringing what. s
  10. I'll be supplying some Spirulina flake as well. I have half an old bottle of Selcon (about 1yr old), so we can put all of that in (unless it ages and is useless by now). s
  11. Let's use the coral chow contributions thread for this tank food party. I'll update contributions from folks over there... steve
  12. I have cyclopeze and mysis shrimp to contribute... s
  13. FYI... I have an old MR-1. Same problem. Beckett sealed in. Andy at My Reef Creations sells a new injector for about $75. Can be opened up and cleaned in a snap. He sells them for 2 reasons... upgrading a single injector system like the MR-2 to a dual injector system AND to upgrade older skimmers. I did this and am a very happy camper now. s
  14. No, that is not normal. Should fire and stay lit. I'm not an expert here on how to fix it, but I do know once it fires, it should stay lit. s
  15. I built my Nilsen reactor a couple years ago at a club building party at my house. It uses a powerhead to mix the kalk. I have it hooked up using quick release fittings, making it easy to remove and then refill with kalk. The top has three old fittings in it for 1/4" tubing which are not used anymore. Only the top one is used to bleed off air after closing it up. This design came from a mix of the designs Michael posted. I'll take more pictures when I reload the kalk. The stiring powerhead is on a digital timer set to run for 1 minute every three hours every day. Keeps it mixed well and minimizes the destruction on the impellar. Seems to need a new impellar about annually, which I call pretty maintenance free. Nilsen sitting next to 20G Brute bucket for reservoir. Note the solenoid to stop the siphon and the powerhead are both controlled by a relay switch (from lifereef.com): I use a MJ1200 in the bottom of the 20G reservoir to pump the water. Flow is slow and gentle. Just about perfect against head pressure and back pressure through the system. Here's the lifereef float switch in my sump... steve
  16. Don't forget to help contribute to the Tank Food Party. Hmm... pool party, ground up fish guts. Perfect! s
  17. Yes, its a tank food party as well. Check out the Tank Food Party we held at my house about a year ago. Excellent photos of the event and info on the recipe there. Also in the DIY forum is Michael's food recipe. Look there for more info on what to bring. Please post what you can bring! Everyone walks away with some if we contribute enough stuff... s
  18. Resurrecting this thread to help us with our tank food party on July 10! We need folks who are willing to contribute ingredients. Look through the recipes above and tell us what you can and will be bringing to this fragrant event! Looking forward to a nice social time with everyone! Steve
  19. frag swapping is always on the radar screen. I have tons of xenia and zoanthids looking for a new home. Got mushrooms, staghorns colt and sinularia as well... s
  20. Got lucky. cowrie has a test kit. mine tested as 1250ppm. sea water is 1300-1500, so I think a few water changes will bring it back up. s
  21. Please do not forget... we will be making TANK FOOD as well. I'll start a thread for coral chow and we will repeat the "bass-o-matic" for those who show an interest. Also a tank tour... Craig Kuhn's magnificent collection of tanks and (obviously) my tanks. We look forward to those who can come and enjoy a nice summer day with WAMAS! Oh Yeah, this is a FAMILY event. Kids, spouses and significant others are all welcome! s
