  1. Leaving the hobby

  2. Proving that RFID can work just as well under water as above, the Underwater World aquarium in Singapore (UWS) is taking a unique approach to identifying fish while they are swimming in their tanks, as we reported last month. The new concept was created to give visitors a more interactive and educational experience, while making it easier for staff to monitor the individual health of the fish. See attached PDF! 3. I just wanted to say THANKs for a great event. Quite impressive. Excellent speakers. Excellent raffle. Great coral frags. Zowie. And it did NOT hurt that I won that EuroReef CR80 skimmer. That may just save my tank and keep me going in the hobby! Thanks to Blue Ribbon Koi and EuroReef for donating it to the club for raffle. steve
  4. yup... THAT Emily! Lemme know when to stop by... s
  5. In my bill from DirecTV, it had an advert in it for Setanta Sports. Claims they are the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany licensed broadcaster. $11.95/mo. Anyone know anything about this channel? Will it be in HD? I suspect it is much like Univision, but in English. Thoughts? s
  6. I care. Love the avatar. For the addicted, go to bCentral World Cup Schedule. Download the application and it will add the full world cup schedule to your MS Outlook calendar! Then you REALLY will know who is playing when... s
  7. ITALBRASS MOODY AQUARIUM CONSOLE SINK For a sale price of $4550, how could anyone resist? s
  8. I have a Mag7 you could use. I also have spare impellers for them. How long are you gone for? I am in process of a waterchange and this is my waterchange pump... s
  9. I use an electronic shut off valve from LifeReef.com. Expensive (about $60), but flawless. If power is on to run the pump for flow through the kalk reactor, the shut off is opened. When power goes out, it shuts off the flow. No siphoning and back flow. Perfect. Make sure this baby is on the fresh water side of the reactor. Check valves rarely work due to the cracking pressure issue. Another strategy is a peristaltic dosing pump. No siphoning ever. s
  10. How big of a tank is it in now? How big is it now? How big is it projected to grow to? s
  11. Thanks to BRK. Great to see a new LFS. You are a much needed supply of difficult to find stuff (esp. plumbing!). Look forward to supporting you and your store over the years! We appreciate your support of WAMAS. Look forward to seeing you at the winter meeting! (I Hope). s
  12. Wouldn't ya know, both my teams are playing during the social: Redskins and Patriots. The rest of y'all are a bunch of losers. You wait and see... So.. How big's the TV? Got Surround Sound to go with it? Details please! s

  15. Because of MACNA, we have the interest of the Nat'l Aqu'm in DC's president. He'd love for us to do something together. As a courtesy, I do not think I can give out his info on a public forum. Call me at 703.319.3171 and we can chat about how to do this. Ok?
  16. We are about to update the WAMAS website with info about the MACNA experience. Care to share stories about the event? If you have photos, would you please email them to Nathan at bizonthenet@comcast.net. We'll post what you send! Descriptions would be nice, as we may need help understanding what you send... Thanks to all who participated in the event. TIA to those that post and send pictures! steve

  19. Welcome aboard. We meet quarterly, but the meetings tend to be large and well attended. Lots of trading and always a good speaker. You might try SuperZoo in Annandale. Marine Scene is a high quality store in Herndon (notice the high part). They have excellent animal husbandry practices and that's where I got most of my fish. You can also try Roozen's in Port Washington, MD. They are a wholesale/tranship operation with retail facilities. Hope to meet you at our next meeting. steve
  20. Thanks for all the kind words. WAMAS was a kick butt group and we made it happen. No idea what that blenny is. Took that picture in Belize. ??? s
  21. Turns out our winner had made an arrangement with the Hotel staff to have it brought up to the loading dock. She was to figure out packaging and shipping and have it sent away today. The staff was really kind and moved it from the garage to the loading dock. All should be well on that front. Drat. I wanted it! :P Steve
  22. The WAMAS Member ThankYou list is Way too long. Our club has put quite a stamp of success on MACNA. I met a lot of new faces from our club and the spirit of volunteerism was very humbling. I thank all of you who helped out. First and foremost in my mind is a personal thank you to Craig Kuhn. Without you, we all would have fallen on our collective -sses. 2am setting up FRAGexchange? wow... I'm grateful for your friendship and partnership in running this event. Dave Sandstrom, Michael Gerdes: The speakers and coordination were absolutely top notch Doug Arthur and Aaron Klein: You guys made internet and audio/visual look easy Rastaman and Lito: I can't say how much I appreciate the hours you spent at registration Doris and Nathan Gaub: T-shirts, Gift shop and raffle. What a huge job. What an incredible success. Tamie DeWitt: Gala banquet and desert reception. Yummy. Need I say more? Glen Rosenbluth: General volunteer management and "get it done" guy. Thanks. Moderators: Chip, and all the others that I don't know of, these sessions stayed on time and people loved the way it flowed. Club members: During setup, tear down, I got nothing but smiles, high fives, appreciation, and "these guys are heros" from the vendors. If I forgot someone, I apologize. I'm a bit space and tired. What an effort by all. steve

Even if you just want to vist the exhibit hall, buying a Gala ticket is worth every penny!!! Support your club. Come to MACNA XVII. You will find it to be a hugely rewarding experience. Not to mention the freebies, free frags, corals for sale, and raffles... Steve
  24. Contact ReefMon. He had the mother lode of tank crashes. And he's back with a fantastic system. Again. s
  25. Hi all, We have just finished a teleconference with Ian Martinez of the city paper. Yes, he's for real. Yes, if you want to be part of a story in the paper, please DO talk to him. We're kinda excited because it will help WAMAS, MACNA and our mission on issues in sustainability how we are leading to fix them, both as WAMAS and as individual members. Do talk with him if it can fit your schedule!!! Steve
