  1. I had a similar experience. My gf bought 5; one-by-one over the course of a few weeks, all but one jumped out. And that was in a 180g. I didn't have anything to keep them from jumping out, though. Part of me wants to try to have several again, 'cause they're so cool looking, now that I have egg-crate I can put to keep things from jumping out. Plus, now that I got rid of my only ("semi-")aggressive fish (bicolor pseucochromis), the firefish can spread out if they can't get along... The one remaining fish is still around and lives in a little nook with my watchman goby (and I think my peppermint shrimp as well).
  2. Brian, I can help out. Call me tomorrow (510-681-4996) if you still need it. (I was at your place last week, so I know how to get there.)
  3. Erik, are you saying you don't need/want a grounding probe AT ALL? Just have GFCIs and that's all you need? I was actually planning on getting a grounding probe, too, after reading others' advice on here.... As for the GFCIs, one of the outlets I use is connected off of a GFCI, but one still isn't, and I've been wanting to swap that out. I actually bought a couple GFCI outlets about a year ago but when I went to install, there were more wires in the existing outlet than the instructions explained how to deal with, so I didn't know what to do and ended up never installing it. I'd like to, though; I like safety. Anyone care to come over to give me a lesson in electrical wiring?
  4. i'm kinda lookin for recent grads (college biz degree or biz school) who're interested in starting/running businesses rather than workin for the man... want to meet up for lunch sometime?
  5. How much are you selling the achilles for?
  6. Hydor Koralias output in a V shape. I'd imagine a couple 4s would be enough, but I'll let others opine. They aren't small, though...
  7. Anyone else? Got a PM from Valeria, who'd be interested in some of the equipment. Probably need a couple more people involved... Tank still available Brian?
  8. If no one wants to buy the whole thing for their own set-up... If there are others around who're interested in going in on it together, i.e., to make an offer and part out, then let me know. I can front the money and we can use my basement as a staging area (though it's a finished basement, so we can't make a total mess). My place can be available all week long. I also have an empty 120g on its way from MOT (I think), which would make things a whole lot easier. The caveats are: I can't do much of the work because I have several time-consuming and time-sensitive projects (that's why I'm offering to front the money and the space). And my girlfriend's parents will be staying over next weekend, so that would limit comings and goings that weekend.
  9. i used to have that growing randomly in my tank; it got to be pretty big, but one day it broke off from the rock and that was it. weird how stuff just grows outta nowhere. i thought it was really pretty, so I was sad it died. i imagine though it would've been eaten up pretty quickly once i got my tangs...
  10. Just got an email about this. Sale only lasts until 2pm tomorrow (Wed). Problem is, they have a $9 processing fee and a $9 fuel surcharge. So their "free shipping" is worthless. Grrrr. But if you were thinking about making an order, might as well get a copperband, too. Beautiful fish. Of course, if you just happen to be ordering from there tonight or tomorrow morning and DON'T want one, throw in an order for a copperband for me!
  11. I don't know much about zebra fish, but this sure sounds cool... Story HERE.
  12. That's pretty cool. I have to say, one of my favorite things about this hobby is when it seems like members of two different species have become "friends," even if that's not what's really going on. I have a lavender tang that sometimes swims around with my wrasse.
  13. I'm planning on getting an iPhone 'cause i need a new phone. I wish they'd come out with the second-gen G3 (and GPS?) phone already, but I'm going to have to get one soon. Oh well. As for the iPod Touch, I'm not as big a fan of that 'cause I'm not a huge portable-music listener and relying on free wireless hotspots doesn't give you much in the way of network access. But I think after June, when the iPhone/iPod Touch software update comes out, and a slew of third-party apps start coming out shortly thereafter, the iPhone/iPod becomes a very attractive option. If you can buy the ACIII now and the iPod later, that might be the best of both worlds (though I guess that's a Duh!!). Or maybe by then they'll have announced the second gen iPhones and you'll want a new phone.
  14. what's GSM? green spotted(?) mandarin?
  15. I guess it also depends how much you're feeding too. One person's once-a-day might be no better or worse than another person's once-a-week depending on what and how much? Another thing, don't anemones regurgitate (or whatever you call it) what they don't digest? I thought I read they can only eat so much and will spit out the rest. Not that that would be enough to cure overfeeding, but seems like it's a natural brake on the problems mentioned in the article.
  16. What's a good ramp-up rate? I'm too cheap to buy a phosphate reactor, is it good enough to put it in a filter bag and stick it somewhere in the sump? Is it okay to put it in a filter sock or will there not be enough water movement through the media?
  17. I feed when I have the motivation to, which ranges from 0 (usually) to 2 or 3 (rare) times per week. Mine looks much better when being fed consistently; that's how I nursed him back from wasting away (I didn't realize I needed to be feeding him at first). Because I'm not good at doing it consistently, he hasn't grown much since I successfully nursed him back to health. But I'm going to start feeding him regularly, if I can keep it up. A while back I threw some shrimp and bay scallops and some garlic (maybe something else but don't remember) into a blender and froze chunks of that; I also a whlie back cut up some fish I'd bought but didn't eat. I feed him either of those, usually the former, or a clump of mysis. Watch out b/c shrimp and crabs will sometimes steal the food. I saw last week a tank (Niki's) in which an anemone had grown enormously over a year (at least quadrupling in size AND splitting off an anemone equal to the original size). Niki said she'd fed it daily. Her's was a RBTA, I believe. My anemone came bleached, so I guess that means it doesn't have the photosynthetic bacteria or whatever it is that provides the energy that would allow other anemones to get by without being fed. (?) Does anyone know how one can get the color back into an anemone? mine's white as ivory. Looks nice, but I guess it's not healthy...
  18. I've heard it said not to go from 0 to 24-7 with phosphate remove. Is that right? Why is that? If that's right, what's the ramp-up rate?
  19. Ah, great! I will contact him and see if he can come out to take a look. I'll update to let you all know how it goes.
  20. darn, I was hoping that was a link, Raf!!
  21. 180g. I know, that's a lot of weight. :( Do you have experience with adding support to a floor? Or any idea how complicated/expensive that is?
  22. Hi Phil. Thanks for the reply. When I set it up and started filling it with water, it was slightly off level, but it wasn't enough to make me want to empty, level, and refill (or to think something might be really problematic). I was a little concerned, enough to do some really rough measurements (I didn't really have anything to do exact measurements with), bit I didn't think it was getting worse for a really long time. But now I think it is. I can't see the joists from below, but I was thinking about taking down the paneling in the garage this weekend to take a look. I'd thought about doing this for a while b/c...: I think the depression might have first occurred due to previous occupants' having a small flood of water in the kitchen leak down through the floor; the thought occurred to me b/c (embarrassed to say...) I accidentally had a small flood in the kitchen as well, which is why I've sort of been hawkish about the depression. As background, I'm in a townhouse, the tank is up against a side wall. One end is close to where there's a (I think) supporting wall below; the other side, close to the depression, does not have a supporting wall below (below is the garage). I'm most worried about the strength of the floor, of course; the leveling of the tank is of secondary concern.
  23. I'd like to have someone come over and look at the floor where I have my tank. When I set it up, there was a slight depression on one end of the room. I'm pretty worried that it's getting worse due to the weight of the tank. So I'd like to have someone look at it, help me discuss solutions, tell me how much it would cost worst-case scenario, etc. Can anyone help me with that? (I'm willing to pay, of course; how much would such an appraisal cost?) Or can someone recommend such a person? Thanks. I'd ideally like to do this sooner rather than later, so I can take corrective action or sleep easier. (I know, I should have known to worry about this when I set up the tank, but if I had to start the hobby all over again, there's a lot I'd do differently...)
