  1. Nice! Not good for the frag tank. This thing really gets around too - I never know where it will be the next day, or what will be stuck to it. The lines in the coraline it munches aren't that bad, and must not be very dep because they purple back up in a couple of days.
  2. Thanks Rascal I hope to get a better shot of it in the coming days for the contest. I think VicSkimmer's starfish picture is going to be hard to beat though . . . jp
  3. this thing just rolled through a patch of zoas and now looks like this:
  4. wow I was going to nuke this thing after it ate the coraline and black paint off my CL plumbing, but just now I saw that it just munched down a patch of valonia I have been battling forever. Coraline is also growing very fast over his tracks, much faster than on 2-part epoxy so it might not munch down that far. jp
  5. Why not plumb in a valve just in case, use a lower rated pump or do the multipe drain plumbing if your returns go over the back some other way? You can also do some fuzzy headloss calculations as well to give you a ballpark idea. I have a 1260 and used the green eheim tubing made for the pump, then went up using fittings to 1". I like low flow through the sump, hence the gate valve, but have been running it wide open for months now. I know it's not the same pump as you have. lol @ how I used to run carbon and the swingarm.
  6. everything you'd want to know is here: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthre...threadid=102605
  7. Weird - I have the AWI Typhoon, and have only hand tightened and removed mine. I don't even know where the wrench is.
  8. FYI, I went with 90's for my outlets, and get great flow across the sandbed. I see the rockwork deflecting current up and around as well. Maybe mix some 90's in with your 45's to get an even wider flow dispersion. jp
  9. I love it - we find common ground on Canadians. Hey, if you change your scope to the US, 1934 is the warmest on record - and check out the spikes in the 30's and 50's. http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/updates/200708.html See what I mean about figuring out what temperatures and ranges to use? I need more info on how they are calculating that land-ocean index anomally statistic.
  10. webshoot - search the chemistry forum on RC for more details. Two sources are much better than one! jp
  11. now that I've stopped laughing with Tx - Wally, that's the kind of response that I can dig into, thank you, let me digest some of it. Is it that the earth is not warming? that is flatly contradicted by empirical data. - I've also seen a lot of empirical data that refutes this, but am really not sure which measurements and timeframes are the ones that paint anything that is cause for the alarmist state some have. Anybody familiar with the GW issue knows about the Time story in the 50's that said the Earth was cooling and we were at the tipping point of heading into an ice age, as well as how normal temperatures are if you go back far enough. How many major hurricanes were predicted this past two seasons? How many hit the US? Is it that human activity is not responsible for the warming? That, as I think I've shown not to be "shattered", is the consensus of the scientific community. - I am not radical to think that human expansion and progress has not created co2 and waste, but geez, those fires in Cali and volcanos and solar storms and such have to enter the mix somewhere, right? And more than somebody driving a Hummer to work. I have to be convinced that a - we are significantly contributing, and b. us lowering our contributions as a nation can make any impact. The Earth is a pretty big, complex thing - I'm not sure that Prius is going to buy us an inch of sea level. Or is it that there is little that can be done to stop the trend absent bankrupting the economy? This last question seems to me the only one up for debate at this point given the late hour. - The American economy is my first concern, which is why I am against enviro-activist legislation and regulation, BUT, again, nobody responsible would suggest that the planet or future generations should suffer because of something we could be doing different. http://www.gravmag.com/oil.html I'd love to see these statists updated, but in 2005 we imported 19% of our oil from Suaid Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq (down from the figures in 2002). I gues that means 81% comes from other places huh (although some like Venezuela are still in OPEC)? Oil only accounts for 42% of our energy dependence, so do the math there too to see what our energy dependence really is on the Middle East. Would you have guessed those percentages before reading this?
  12. oops - no, I meant 'didn't they?, being sarcastic - yes they did figure that out and yes it is a waste of money.
  13. I wasted all those words, research and time typing up what you so succinctly put together TX - beers are on me. You must teach me.
  14. Did they figure out on RC that Purple-Up is nothing more than coraline in RO water?
  15. i posted many links to articles which shatter that belief. Please post one backing your claim up that contains recent scientific data and hypothesis, citing sources. The Senate report listed 400 scientists, only 215 signed the latest thing in Bali. Not sure how we are defining 'consensus'. The closer anybody actually looks at the science behind global climate changes, the more the data states the opposite opinion of the climate alarmists. Dozens of links to back up my statements are contained just in my own posts. Please post one link backing your claim up that contains recent scientific data and hypothesis, not evil Republican and big oil company conspiracy theories, and of course please cite your sources.
  16. Dave - did you see this? http://www.starkproducts.com/product.cfm WATER CHANGES ARE NOT REQUIRED!!! The Stark Lobster system is no ordinary lobster tank. The filtration system was originally designed to maintain water quality for delicate warm water fish, such as Queen Angels, Parrot Fish, and even Lemon Sharks. This same system that will sustain these marine fish for years, in natural high density bio loadings (with no water changes), is the exact filtration used in each Stark Lobster System. The Stark Lobster System has more filtration power and water cleaning capability than you ever thought you needed. If you want to be able to hold more lobsters, in cleaner water, so they really do taste better, and look more attractively displayed in a lighted environment, then the dividends from a Stark Lobster System will be yours to recoup for years to come. The Stark Lobster System is no ordinary lobster tank. WATER CHANGES ARE NOT REQUIRED .
  17. thanks Dave, I would think that non-reefers might like the purple and white contrast he's creating on the rockwork. I pulled that cerith shell off it to see if it was alive - that thing has major sticky power and it's wild to see those feelers all pop out and move it around.
  18. Hola - when I rescued the ocelleris and mandarin, I also felt sorry for a tuxedo urchin which would have not had a merry Christmas without me. Now I see this thing is blazing a trail through my rock, and turning it back to white like when I bought it. Could this actually be good for the tank, as it is placing those elements back into the environment somehow? Anyways, wanted to see what the consensus is on the urchins. Here is a cool picture of what looks like an RBTA tidal wave. jp
  19. pi * R2 * L - traveller is right on the money using 16" as the height.
  20. if you could attach a vortech somehow you would have serious tidy-bowl action in there.
  21. Go Bob! Here's to seeing your awesome 240 full tank shots in next year's Christmas post!! jp
  22. this is what travellor is referring to. http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-11/mg/index.php
  23. really incredible attention to detail - love all the DIY genius here. jp
  24. good deal, beacuse I know you didn't read the article - The science has continued to grow loud and clear in 2007. In addition to the growing number of scientists expressing skepticism, an abundance of recent peer-reviewed studies have cast considerable doubt about man-made global warming fears. A November 3, 2007 peer-reviewed study found that
