Anyone have pictures of what flat worms look like?
Black Mammoth replied to Black Mammoth's topic in General Discussion
They are pretty tiny. The tiny digital (in macro mode) I have couldn't pick them up. Later I will try to get the macro mode working on my digital SLR. Hopefully my photo skills are good enough to get them. They don't appear to be bothering any of the corals, but there is a lot of them and it's just nasty looking. -
Anyone have pictures of what flat worms look like?

It looks like a combination between the 2nd one on Melev's Reef and the picture in this thread. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthre...light=flat+worm BTW...How was I able to put the edit in my first post without it saying edited? I posted a reply to it and it just put it in the body...weird -
I got something in my tank and I have no idea what it is...actually I got a bunch. I thought it was an algae at first and then I realized that they were moving. I haven't had a chance to get a good picture of an ID. Got any flat worm pictures? Crap! I found a picture and it looks like flatworms! However, they really haven't touched any of my corals. How on earth did I get these? I guess I'll be purchasing some flat worm exit.

Dinoflagellates & UV Sterilizer
Black Mammoth replied to Black Mammoth's topic in General Discussion
I'm not sure how much I can push through the UV, but it is quite a bit. I have to look at the manual. I think it says that it kills bacteria around 105 - 115gph. Then it's like 250gph for algae...and it continues on. So I made sure that I did low flow so I could kill down to the bacteria level. I had a bunch of crap in my tank...ich, velvet, and more crap awhile ago. So I wanted to make sure I got it all. I went fish free for like a 8 weeks. Then I ran the UV for another 6 to 8 weeks. So far all the fish look healthy. I will have to try the PHOSaR. -

Dinoflagellates & UV Sterilizer
Black Mammoth replied to Black Mammoth's topic in General Discussion
I'm positive that it is dinoflagellates. I don't know for sure that it isn't helping, but it just seems like it. The tank has been cycled for at least 6 months The UV bulb is maybe 2 months old. I just got the UV sterilizer I have just under 100gph going through the UV sterilizer PH is actually in the "normal range." Usually it sits around 8.3...sometimes...usually it is somewhere between 8.2 & 8.4. Actually, I would say it's a bit on the high side. It's a new sand bed that is pretty shallow...maybe an 1 to 2 inches thick...just under the black bar on the tank. It is oolite sand...CaribSea. I stopped adding chemicals and they were just Randy's 2 part solution. I'm going to dose again to get the Alk and Calc up. I think the low Alk is causing problems. I just replaced all my filters, RO membrane, and DI resin. The only thing I need to get going is new bulb and cheato for the sump. I also need to check for phosphates. I was going to check my freshly made saltwater for phosphates. Another WAMAS member in my town says that the phosphates are around 1.4 He doesn't know why his RO/DI system isn't pulling them out. So I need to check my water for phosphates to see if I'm having the same problem. -
I'm battling a dinoflagellate problem right now. I'm doing my best to get rid of it, but it has been pretty tough. I have an 18 watt UV Sterilizer running 24/7 on my 90g w/40g sump. I'm flowing just enough water through it so I can kill bacteria. That should be more than enough to kill algae. So here is my question. What am I still have a dinoflagellate problem with the UV Sterilizer running? I've cleaned the glass and everything I could to get this stuff out. Then I did a 30g water change. I'm going to make the light cycle shorter (4hours) and raise the Ph and this should help...but I'm still wondering why the UV Sterilizer isn't helping. Is it possible that this stuff just isn't getting sucked in to the water column?

I got mine from ReefGeek.com You can upgrade the reflectors if you want.

I'm calling you out...fraud!!! If you were legit you would post pics!! j/k Now where is the emoticon that says that this thread is useless without pics? Come on what did ya get?

Is that for RC or IO? Actually, I've been interested in doing a GB for RC, but never really looked in to it.

Wow! I might have to stop by there again...even though it is a haul for me. I was there about this time last year...maybe April last year. I went up there to get a Tunze and I didn't want to wait and get it from Premium Aquatics. The price on the Tunze was fantastic! I was really impressed with the tank up front. I didn't look at the price on corals since I wasn't interested in them at the time. I was really impressed by the variety of the fish and how healthy looking everything was, but I nearly had a heart attack when I saw the prices. I kid you not...those were the prices when I was in there about a year ago...but it sounds like that the prices are drastically cheaper from the last time I was there. I'll have to go up there again to check them out again. FWIW, I don't like Roozens either I'll spend the extra money to get something I think that is healthy I found your Bellus story kind of funny. I spent forever (almost a year) trying to get one. F&F was able to get me one and I was so happy...but then I lost it when I moved :( Now I'm trying to get another one. Well I'm glad to hear a bunch of people chiming in on the prices. Maybe I'll stop by there again on my next trip up to AC I try to hit as many stores as I can as they all have their pros & cons :D

How can you guys afford exotic aquatics?! The only thing that they have good prices on is some of the hardware. Maybe they changed it around since I was there...but Ocellaris Clowns (False Percs) were $50 each!!!! Skunk Cleaners for $40 - $50 each. All of their fish were like that. Nice store and all...very clean, but way too expensive. It makes Marine Scene look like Walmart.

Killing Bryopsis with Elevated Levels of Magnesium
Black Mammoth replied to a topic in General Discussion
Very interesting. I'm still having some problems, but my hair algae went nuts recently. I talked to Sean at F&F and he got me 5 HUGE crabs for my 90. They've been mowing that stuff down like crazy. They haven't destroyed everything yet, but they've done a pretty good job. You may want to talk to him and see if he can get you the same crabs he got me. -
Thanks...I just used it!

I've seen 2 in a 75g and a 90g. I have 2...well I'm waiting on my other one to come in. I've seen 3 in a 90g. I say give it a shot. They might fight for a couple days. My PBT and Magnificent Foxface fought for the first couple days. They now get along.

I don't really know too much about the fish diseases...I usually have F&F help me out. With that said, is it possible that you can treat them by lowering your salinity? I've found that hypo and copper helps me, but I know that you said that the copper doesn't do you much good with this disease. I'm not sure if hypo will help.

What's my problem- calling all tank detectives
Black Mammoth replied to DaveS's topic in General Discussion
15 total snails or 15 of each variety...even if it is the latter, that's still probably not enough. That's not even enough for my 90g. I would stop by Fins & Feathers (closer to you) or Blue Ribbon Koi and talk to Sean or Johnny about your situation and setup. They can help you out with getting the correct stuff and right number of each They know their stuff. -
What's my problem- calling all tank detectives
Black Mammoth replied to DaveS's topic in General Discussion
Coraline is kind of weird. It likes to grow wherever it likes. There are several factors that come in to play. It could be lighting, flow, calc levels, etc. Your calc levels seem OK. I don't think your coraline growth is out of the ordinary. Are you sure that the brown hair algae isn't dead green hair algae? Also, when green hair algae starts, it can look like brown hair algae and then it will turn green. Unfortunately, you can't really do an accurate test for phosphates with all the green hair algae. You can try testing your RO/DI water for phosphates to see if there is anything in there. I'm also interested to hear about the bulbs. My guess is that lighting has nothing to do with your problem. Every time I've heard something like this (or experienced), it was due to something being out of whack...whether it was Ph, Alk, Calc, etc, something was wrong. How's your cleaner crew doing? If you lost a lot of corals and fish, I imagine you lost a bit of your cleaner crew. I would make sure you have enough critters helping out. -
Becareful when replacing your bulbs. You want to do it slowly over a period of time. You don't want to replace all of them at once. That might stress out your corals (i.e. bleaching). Maybe a bulb every week or two.

What is a "heavy" bio-load and bubble envy
Black Mammoth replied to alan mcilvried's topic in General Discussion
I think you would be OK with that load because most of the fish are pretty small. I don't think I would put any Anthias in a 75g, they typically need a lot of room. They are beautiful and I would love to have them, but I only have a 90g. As for a skimmer, well I guess it depends on how much you want to spend. IMHO an ASM skimmer is the best bang for your buck. I have a modified G2 skimmer on my 90g with a decent bio load (4 Green Chromis, 2 Ocellaris Clowns, Flame Angel, Bellus Angel, Magnificent Foxface, and a Powder Blue Tang). All have been in the tank except the Bellus, I'm waiting on it. I also have about 160lbs of live rock. The EuroReef are also popular. I would like a Deltec, but I just can't bring myself to spend that kind of money on a skimmer when it could be used in other places Don't get me wrong, they are very nice. I believe you can get a ASM G2 in your 24" requirement...it'll be close. Your skimmer probably doesn't have much to suck out of the water yet. More may come later. I'm not really familiar with that skimmer, so I can't really say how good it is. Some signs that your skimmer isn't keeping up is if you have to empty it every day and it's really thick. Also, you may see your water params spike and you can't bring them down. BTW as a side note, I would recommend not using any live fish to cycle a tank, it is pretty rough on them. So if you have to do another cycle in the future, I would use a piece of shrimp (or something like that). Also, I would QT your fish before putting them in your main tank. Keep an eye on them and make sure they are healthy and disease free before putting them in your tank. Good luck! Oh BTW, I see that you recently joined....welcome! -
According to the guys at reefgeek.com, they told me 2" - 3" above the water. Mine is sitting around there. I have SPS growth on my sand bed in my 90g. With that said, I try to keep my SPS up higher. You have to be careful because some SPS don't like being up that high and they'll start to bleach or not grow very much.

2 part dosing question(s)
Black Mammoth replied to jason the filter freak's topic in General Discussion
I dose by hand every night. It doesn't take very long and it's cheap. Maybe one day I'll spend the extra money to have it do it for me automatically. I bought 1 gallon dispensing containers. Usually people fill them up with water and put them in their fridge. Then they just use the nozzle to fill up their glass. I bought 3 of those and put my solutions (Ca, Alk, Mag) in those. They hang off a shelf and I just fill up my dosing glass every night and dose after I feed. Then you save yourself a little money -
Sean and his staff yet again did another great job! I had a terrible outbreak of crap in my tank. All of my fish got sick with multiple things...ich, velvet, etc...very odd. Anyway, my hospital tank wasn't big enough to keep both my Magnificent Foxface and Powder Blue Tang. Sean identified what probably stressed them out and also was able to take my Foxface and PBT to nurse them back to health. While this happened, my other fish came in from an order I placed with him. He was able to hold them until my other fish got healthy and my main tank was back to normal. Wait...yes...one more thing happened. When all of this happened my mother-in-law passed away :( Sean held on to the fish for another 2 weeks or so! I'm very thankful of that. IMHO he went way above and beyond than what he needed to. I just thought it was worth sharing.

I like to do two sections in my sump. Water comes in to the fuge so it can constantly move the cheato around. Then the other section has my heaters, auto top off, skimmer, UV sterilizer, and return. My skimmer and UV sterilizer dumps out back to the fuge side to reduce microbubbles and to help with the flow.
