Anthworks September 10, 2006 September 10, 2006 I was told by the folks at TFW that they are working towards setting up a reef section of the store. They are converting an office by the current salt water section and putting in tanks for corals. They plan on several tanks for SPS, LPS and softies. Just thought I would let people know.
dzekunoi September 10, 2006 September 10, 2006 Thanks! Their prices are usually up to the sky. Maybe they will be better on pricing though.
Charlie97L September 12, 2006 September 12, 2006 Cool. I've been meaning to check them out. i really like them for freshwater, especially. really nice guys. i think if they put some real effort in, they can have a top-notch sw system. they do seem to be leaning more that way, they really fixed up their SW fish section a few months ago... very impressive. they also have the best selection of FW plants i've ever seen, for anyone into that.
Anthworks September 13, 2006 Author September 13, 2006 From talking to them they are planning a good system. No date on when it will be ready though.
jamesbuf September 14, 2006 September 14, 2006 They do have a great SW fish setup. Their fish are usually healthy and disease free. On several occasions they've warned me that a fish had just come in and that they were waiting to see if the fish ate before selling them. They actually offer a guarantee on their SW fish too. You have to bring them a water sample and they only give half credit, but its better than any other store. Only one I know of in this area to offer a guarantee on SW fish.
rooroo November 2, 2006 November 2, 2006 All the fish I've bought from them have lived (except a large lawnmower blenny, and he died because he didn't have enough to eat. Stupidity on my part). Also, all the corals I've bought from them have survived. I like this store cause its on the way home for me. Split my time between TFW and Aquatic Creations.

altezza November 2, 2006 November 2, 2006 I was just there yesterday and yes they are setting up a new section for saltwater, which used to be their office. Looks like everything is going good so far, I'll come back next week to see their progresses.
rooroo November 2, 2006 November 2, 2006 (edited) I work in Rockville very close to Shady Grove. So its right on the way home. They don't have much by way of corals, but they do have a few. Got a leather and a couple mushrooms from them. If you're talking SPS then they have nothing, but softies they've got a few of. I like that they've got several varieties of tank raised fish there. jamesbuf November 6, 2006 November 6, 2006 I stopped by the other day and the new coral room is coming along nicely. They claim they'll have it up and running within a months time. It looks like they're going all out too.
rooroo December 26, 2006 December 26, 2006 I stopped by a few days ago to check out the coral room... not much has changed since a month ago when I saw it. I asked the one guy thats there all the time when he though it would be done, he shrugged. So who knows. I hope they get it finished up soon.
flowerseller December 27, 2006 December 27, 2006 go to scales on newhampshire ave, youll love it. Anthony, start a new thread, this one's about Tropical Fish World,
rooroo March 22, 2007 March 22, 2007 Just stopped by last night to get some snails and to see how the reef room is doing. Its all done! Theyve got 3 big tanks, 2 with T5s and one with MH. Plus a bunch of smaller tanks that they're putting various shrimp and snails into. When I was in they were unpacking a shipment of salt stuff including a ton of corals and inverts, so I couldn't get the snails I wanted, but will be back tonight. I'll let everyone know if they've got anything worth checking out.
dzekunoi March 25, 2007 March 25, 2007 Prices are not low. I asked about a few pieces and had to skip. 3" crocea - $85 ?
rooroo March 29, 2007 March 29, 2007 Not cheap. They probably have very high overhead. It is a large store space in Gaithersburg after all. Actually I found their fish prices to be reasonable but their coral prices were always high. I spoke with the manager and he said they want to do trade-ins from local hobbiests to get their prices lower. It seems buying from their wholesaler is expensive, probably on par with what we pay online. And they need to make a profit to run the store.

They do not buy but give store credit for livestock in the store - does not work for me. I love their freshwater section though. Very good selection and prices.
jamesbuf March 29, 2007 March 29, 2007 I've traded in several items there before. Both freshwater and saltwater fish and corals. I've also bought a decent ammount of stuff there too, so it might be on an individual basis. If they know you as a customer they might be more inclined to give you credit.
