Valve on DC return pump?

Is it ok to use a valve to slow down a DC return pump? I need extremely slow flow for a new tank and have placed a valve inline to slow it down.. any issues? Thanks

As long as the valve is on the output side of the pump should be fine

Wouldn't it make sense just to grab a smaller pump?

Tank is already plumbed and this pump is installed... plus its what I have on hand..

Also, I'm not sure a smaller pump would have the head pressure to get water up from the sump even at a slower rate..
