Mr11's 65g Artfully Acrylic 65g upgrade

I bought my first tank, a 50g acrylic tank off of craigslist last October and I'm already upgrading! I wanted some better dimensions to work with so I decided to get Adam at AA to build me a 65g 48 x 18 x 18 tank and stand. I picked up the tank and stand a couple of weeks ago and have working on plumbing the thing.

The stand is amazing, professional display quality piano black laminate. The tank has an external overflow which I've plumbed with a beananimal overflow system. I went with a Trigger sump Ruby 36 which I want to use to establish a refugium, something I don't currently have. I'll otherwise be transferring all of my other equipment over to start: Eheim 1262 return, SCA302 skimmer, Gyre 130, and Koralia something something.

The livestock, rock etc will be transferred over and this is the part I'm most concerned about, any advice is appreciated. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions along the way but this is a start. Let me know what you think!

That stand is awesome. Im looking for something identical in white. Ill have to hit them up.

Is the hole in the eurobrace for wires or something else? Going with one of the lids for this?

Yeah the stand is KILLER. It far exceeded my expectations, very professional looking. With the laminate I'm pretty sure they can do any color you want so definitely get in touch with them.

Yeah I assume the holes in the eurobrace are for wires, at least that's what I'm using them for. And I do have one of their lids on the way. I planned to have the lid ready when the tank was but there was a slight miscommunication on that front but the guys at AA are making it right and are top notch in terms of customer service.

Looks awesome! I would also have a lid on the overflow. it makes such a big difference when it comes to noise and keeps all the splash in.

Tagging along.

This is my current setup for reference. I'm light on corals but that'll change.

Next challenge is mixing up 65g of water 5g at a time

Can you get a Brute trashcan from the hardware store and make 35g of it at a time?  Then you can drop an MJ1200 in there with a long hose attached to fill the tank up.

I could probably do that for a one time thing. There's no place to store a brute trashcan in my apartment though. That would save quite the headache...

I started working on some additional aquascape features while I fill my tank. I can't say I'm ecstatic with this cave but not really sure why or what I can do to improve it. Let me know what you think! This will be in addition to live rock I'm moving over.

I like the cave but think of the flow and deitrus collection in the rocks.

Also GoT in the background, dig it! Can't wait for the new season; "the winter is ... finally here!"

Thanks! And welcome to WAMAS. I'll have pictures of it posted up soon. The lights I have came with legs so it just sits on top, not he most attractive solution. I did find out that these 32" light REALLY drop off in intensity quickly at the edges so I'm looking to upgrade so something longer.

Thanks. I really want to get some pictures up but I'm dealing with some nasty algae.

I put all new dry rock in one half of the tank and all of my old established live rock in the other half. The algae started covering the dry rock and then the sand around my dry rock and spread out towards my live rock. Kinda weird. I can't figure out how to manage it. I tried vacuuming some out today but I barely made a dent.

No way around the initial bloom with new rock. Provided water quality is high, the initial bloom will quickly die off. I like posting the pics all nasty so I can look back and see the progress. I have a pic with some nasty dinos that I compare to now (coralline really starting to take off) and get all excited LOL.

  Good point. Here it is algae and all. Nobody is particularly happy at the moment but I'm working on improving water chemistry. Really liking these Reefbreeder V2s, they have a lot better color in person and my pictures aren't all super blue. Also testing out the new iPhone depth of field effect on my cleaner shrimp. Sump pictures are next

Have to say, that stand is really nice. But the tank... IMHO it's the star of the show. Simple, sharp, fantastic design.  Wish I never saw it, because now I want one.
