I picked up two nice corals from Howards tank breakdown. He told me what they were, but I promptly forgot..

Looking for an ID on these so I can get more informed as to their care:

Other than a patch of not-so-colorful zooanthids that came on my live rock, these are the first corals I have had experience with.

I am now running 2 strips of T5s (1 blue, 1 white) and 2 strips of VHO (1 blue, 1 white). The corals seem to be doing well in my tank.

I don't test for calcium, but maybe with these I don't need to? Other than basic maintenence (skimmer cleaning, 5% weekly water change, RO/DI auto-top off) I am not doing anything else.

Capanella and Green star polyps

They are easy and would prob live through some of the worst conditions. Just do what you have been doing and you will be fine!

The first one is a Capnella also known as Kenya Tree.

The second one is a Pachyclavularia, also known as Green Star Polyps.

They both grow quick, and quickly will cover your tank, so keep them trim.

Stevil,

Great choice on getting those corals. It's good to see folks starting out with corals that are likely to bring them success.

One more thing. Check your water parameters and quality. The Capnella polyps should be extended at least three times as shown on your picture. Look into my gallery and see a picture of a fully extended purple Capnella tree for comparison.

Ok - I see the difference. That is why I wasn't sure mine was a Kenya tree to begin with...

My parameters are:

Temp 80

SG 1.0225

pH 8.0 (normally is 8.2)

Alk - 2 meq/L

Nitrite: 0

Ammonia: 0

Nitrate: 0

I can also test phosphate, but didn't. Last week it was 0. I don't have any other tests right now.

Steve,

You're fine. That capnella is the one from my tank. My baby!

Polyp extension is fine. It is a different variety than Jake's. Look in my gallery with the hippo tang and you will see it in the bottom right.

Ha ha - that coral sure gets around... So it's definitely a capnella, but not a Kenya Tree?

Nice Pictures!!!

What camera?

Thanks! I use a Canon Digital Rebel XT (8 megapixel), with an EF-S 17-85mm lens. I also make sure to use a tripod when shooting my tank.

Capnella, Kenya Tree - same thing...

Stevil,

I'd like to be the next owner of that Kenya Tree if and when you don't want it anymore. LOL

It is awesome! :)

Gallery? Which gallery? :)

EricBrian,

Anytime you want, I'll cut you a peice. Social? It grows quite fast, and I usually have it on the free table at meetings.

I got some Capnella, Kenya Tree FREE, just need to pick it up in Herndon, VA.

Jacob

If distance is the issue, I got plenty of free capnella right here in Tysons Corner area. Come and get it! :P

I'd love to have to have some. :)

Maybe this Saturday at the Social?

Also, anybody in the Huntington Area (Alexandria, on Rte 1 just south of the Beltway) and a pro at fragging? I got a tiny button polyp that is covered in algea. Need some help removing it. Maybe somebody in this area could stop by and give me a hand?

Can Zoos move if they don't like the location that I put them?

Thanks. :)
