Squishie89 June 1, 2015 June 1, 2015 (edited) I picked up a 40b and stand yesterday off of Craigslist. Tank is new, stand is used. Tank still had Tetra sticker, cardboard protection and even some stupid back insert (double sided taped to the inside which I find really odd). Today I got around to cleaning the tank out and when I removed the cardboard I found it stuck to the tank. I removed it gently and found that it had been siliconed to the tank. Now I don't care about how it looks, I however do wonder now about the history of the tank and its integrity. I will definitely be doing a water leak test this week. Was this most likely some manufacturing hiccup or was this pane replaced (other thought was that somehow the silicone melted and the cardboard just got stuck to it)? Anything else I should be doing to make sure this tank is safe to use? Here is the tank next to my display yesterday. Thanks!!! Edited June 1, 2015 by Squishie89
wildcrazyjoker81 June 1, 2015 June 1, 2015 My 40B QT was the same. It had cardboard stuck to the silicone. I just made that the back side and filled it up with no issues.
Origami June 8, 2015 June 8, 2015 It looks like they just wrapped the brown paper around it before the silicone was cured on the surface. I'd probably just run a razor blade flat up against the outside surface to scrape off the paper and the excess silicone that was apparently squeezed out.
Coral Hind June 9, 2015 June 9, 2015 I agree with Origami, use a new blade and just skim cut the surface to remove the extra silicone. If you don't feel comfortable using the blade you could get a silicone adhesive remove and apply that to the area and wipe off the top layer.
