lnevo March 31, 2014 March 31, 2014 http://reefbuilders.com/2014/03/31/diy-3d-printed-protein-skimmer/ Ok, this is pretty cool. This is one of the reasons I'm convinced that 3d printing has a huge potential. I would love to see real community developed things like this especially that can adapt something as simple as a 2L soda bottle into a pretty cool protein skimmer. Imagine if we had plans online for media reactors, calcium reactors, other parts (barb fittings, etc) that you could easily get access to and start building at will. Anyway, thought the DIY minded crew here would enjoy...
Origami March 31, 2014 March 31, 2014 Very cool. I'd like to print out a volute cover and a working needle-wheel for a pump, too.
ctenophore March 31, 2014 March 31, 2014 We tried doing needle wheels, but so far the parts we made with our printer (Afinia) wouldn't handle the centrifugal force and the pins were breaking off. Not sure if it was a setting in the printer that caused the pins to be made fast versus strong, but haven't revisited it yet to find out.
Coral Hind March 31, 2014 March 31, 2014 I agree, these printers have a huge potential and as they improve things will get even cooler.
lnevo April 1, 2014 Author April 1, 2014 (edited) And now sumps!!! http://reefbuilders.com/2014/04/01/nextreef-experiements-3d-printed-sumps/ Edited April 1, 2014 by lnevo
lnevo April 1, 2014 Author April 1, 2014 Apparently, I'm a sucker for an April Fool's joke... but seriously why not?
smallreef April 2, 2014 April 2, 2014 It could happen...we're not to far off from it...though I think the printed stuff is not completely smooth?
ctenophore April 2, 2014 April 2, 2014 Big industrial printers could print a sump with perfectly smooth sides right now. Problem is, the machine is $hundreds of thousands. So that's a really expensive sump. But in 5 years I can see little companies like us having a printer like that, and very easily printing sumps to order.
ddfusion August 23, 2014 August 23, 2014 thats really cool, wish i had a 3d printer. would save me so much time and money.
Keraxis August 23, 2014 August 23, 2014 (edited) Just a few things being done right now. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/blog/five-practical-uses-of-3d-printing-for-aquariums http://www.yeggi.com/q/fish+tank/ http://www.makerbot.com/blog/2012/04/26/print-your-hobby-makerbotting-for-aquariums/ This one is neat... not up to standards for a saltwater tank on clarity but this is the future of acrylic tanks eventually. What shape would you pick because it could do anything. http://www.3ders.org/articles/20130227-self-cleaning-fish-tank-3d-printing-steps-into-life-sciences.html Edited August 23, 2014 by Keraxis
