I'm going to be moving a lot of my live rock and all the fish/inverts to a 110g tub. Currently the plan is to just have them in there along with a heater, one or two wave makers and a light. My question is, how long can I keep them in there without real issues? I don't have a skimmer to hook up to the tub or any way of having a sump attached to it.

I'd say a week or 2...and longer if you can do water changes on it...

That actually is way longer than I was planning on having them in there. Ideally they'd only be in there for a day or so. Maybe 2.

But I'll stop worrying now haha. Seems terrifying to put all my livestock into a bin and hope it does well.

But consider this...there are many many people who use large bins to keep livestock instead of a tank...and while they may have a skimmer attached, as long as you have some way to export nutrients long term, there shouldn't be an issue...

That's what I was figuring. Just wasn't sure if there could be problems with oxygen exchange or nutrients without having the skimmer and sump..

What skimmer do u use now on your tank? Why can u use that in your tub?

External skimmer, mtc hsa 2000. Thing is it takes an iwaki 55rlt to run it. If I put the skimmer intake in the tub, I'd probably end up with all my fish and inverts either stuck to the intake or as processed minced skimmed seafood.

Also, I'll be setting up the skimmer to be used with the new sump and new tank location so while I can set it up on the tub, the amount of work to get it in place and then to just take it off again the next day seems .. inefficient for lack of a better word.

I've kept fish in a tub and its amazing how fast nitrates will rise in one. Test daily !

When I moved a few years ago I kept all my fish in a 100g Rubbermaid tub for about six months with no skimmer. The more rock you have the better.

Ok.. I'll stop freaking out about the poor fishies. Almost all of my live rock will go into that tub, and the process should take no longer than half an hour.

All this freaking out for half an hour? :)

Well, I'm going to get them in the tub on Sunday morning. Then move the tank and hopefully have them back in the tank on Sunday night. I was going to put them in there on Saturday morning instead, but I worry that the sand bed that's going to be staying in the tank for the move will die out in a day and a half of no heat or water movement.

Do you need to borrow some equipment to give you a piece of mind? Just in case ? Internal skimmer , BRS dual media reactor for carbon etc. LMK

Thanks for the offer! I think not.. For now. If something goes horribly wrong and I need to keep them in the tub for an extended period, I'll take you up on that offer though.

I think they will all be fine for the time you are expecting to get the move done. Most fish can survive in a plastic bag from the store for 12-24 hours so a tub would be sufficient IMO.

I agree, he will be fine. I doubt the sand bed will die out compeletly. Some minor things might die but for the most part the sand bed will be fine. They ship live sand in sealed bags and the bacteria survives. The bacteria deep in the sand bed likes low O2 levels so it will be even better while the tank is shut down. It was a power outage on a public aquarium tank with an undergravel filter which helped the hobby discover the benefit of denitrification with plenums and later on sand beds.

Fair enough. Well, either way, I think I'm almost at the point of no return for this move. Got the wall down today, made 100g of new saltwater, got new sump made, arranged the tubs and about to go buy the new plumbing parts that I'll need. Yikes. All to move a fish tank 5 feet.

I must say it looked better with a wall hiding all the equipment.
