Larry Grenier January 4, 2006 January 4, 2006 I just bought a 65 gallon setup! :2thumbsup: I've been doing FW for more years than many of you have been alive. A few of you may even remember when I did a reef a few years back (look at my member #). The space where the tank is going fits a 3' wide tank nicely so no "you should have gone bigger" responses please. Besides, I'm thinking about going through the floor later-on and having a large basement refugium and frag tank next to my 3 FW tanks already down there. It's in my garage now :( until I do a few room improvements first. The tank stand and accessories are in great shape so I couldn't pass it up. Basically, I paid $500 for aboult $900+ worth of stuff. Tank - AGA 65 gallon 36/18/24 megaflow + durso Stand - custom oak which stands almost 3' tall; lots of head room. Lights - 36" Tek: 6-39W T5 made by Sunlight Supply It's this model Plus a lousy skimmer, return pump, plumming parts, titanium heater... I'll post more as things develop.
rioreef January 4, 2006 January 4, 2006 Excellent choice on the lighting in my opinion. If you have not had T5s before you are in for a suprise with the amount of output. Change out a couple of the ballasts for one IceCap 660 and increase even more, but probably not needed on that size of a tank. cr
Larry Grenier January 4, 2006 Author January 4, 2006 Thanks Scott! Chris, I agree that the lights are a great option. This is the best piece of the setup I bought. It has two ballasts for more control. Fits nicely into the custom canopy that came with the setup. (plenty of room over and under the fixture for ventalation). Hmmmmm, and my birthday just happens to be in January B)
ErikS January 4, 2006 January 4, 2006 "you should have gone bigger" responses please. I'll never say that...........IMHO the 65 is king of the 3' tanks - great length to width ratio! Nice buy...........you're gonna love those T5s, just don't ever look at them - they'll make you see more spots than MH :D
six-line January 4, 2006 January 4, 2006 Larry, was that the one listed on RC? The guy was in N VA, I was looking at that one but backed out because I want to use a 250 watt MH pendent that I already had. (center brace) It looked really nice, good buy. Congrats.
Folta January 4, 2006 January 4, 2006 You should have knocked a wall out and gone bigger I am having my first experience using T5's - they are really bright, especially with the individual reflectors! I also like the coloring with my bulb configuration - alittle bit on the blue side of white Good luck with the new tank Larry!
Lee Stearns January 4, 2006 January 4, 2006 Great Larry- you are one of the only members around that I can call an old fart- If you are looking for additions to 65 let me know- I know your penchance for raising fish- let me know if you'd like a bangai- my male is carrying eggs again only two weeks after puting him back in the main tank. At least I got two out of the last batch happily living in my fuge... Got some corals for you too when you are ready. Regards, Lee

PupChow January 5, 2006 January 5, 2006 I am actually planning to go 65g in a month or so... really nervous about sump and plumbing since I have never done it before! Would love to see some pictures of your set up once you have it up and running! PS - I got the exact same T5 light you got there! Great light! :P
Larry Grenier January 5, 2006 Author January 5, 2006 Thanks Howard. PupChow, I plummed a sump on a 75 a few years back. I'll plan on pics when I set things up. Eve, aint it true :2thumbsup:
rioreef January 5, 2006 January 5, 2006 I am actually planning to go 65g in a month or so... really nervous about sump and plumbing since I have never done it before! 49066[/snapback] Setting up the sump and then turning it on (??too much water, too little water??) gets the heart pounding, expecially when the water starts spilling over into the overflow or if you have hardwood floors. It kinda like the ACE Hardware commercial where the guy wires up the ceiling fan in the kitchen and then has his hand in the disposal when his wife goes to turn the fan on. He is questioning, did I wire it correctly or am I going to loose some fingers.
