Shoelace October 14, 2013 October 14, 2013 I was supposed to downsize and just do a nano in my kitchen, and then I got on WAMAS, and then I met Ryan (Orion), and then I got sucked right back. Here is my really exciting picture of my empty 40B. I already had the stand from ages ago sitting in my basement. I have never been good at documenting builds, so I'm going to give it a try again. Please, make sure that this is as big as I get. I actually have an in-wall 180 that I turned from a reef into a mbuna tank which i now only have to do about 5 minutes of maintenance every month. If it ever seems like I am going to turn that back into a reef, please perform an intervention! This Marineland tank is pretty cool because it has black silicone. I was thinking of going rimless, but that is so expensive. Save for lighting, I was hoping to use a lot of what I already had in storage. I'd really love suggestions and comments along the way!
Shoelace October 14, 2013 Author October 14, 2013 This is what I set up a couple months ago in the kitchen. I started with a 4G but that was frustrating because it was too small. So I went to a 16G which I really like. I think I will make this a softie tank and make the 40B an SPS tank. I'm certainly going to steal some stuff from here to go to the 40B over time. YHSublime October 14, 2013 October 14, 2013 (edited) Rocking nano. I started with a 14 gallon almost a year ago. It got out of control quickly, and now I've got a 150. You are wise to request an intervention, but foolish to ask for it on a forum with people like myself. There are some really nice 40 breeders around on the forum. One of my personal favorites is fscbishop's, worth checking out, and I think he's more interested in the SPS as well. I've got a MP-40 FS that would really go nice on that 40B! That is a quote worthy of being in my signature! I've seen fscbishop's. I think I really have a lot to do and learn. MP-40 on a 40B? Eh gawd, you temp me! Don't tell your wife that it was my fault! Um, isn't that what the Emperor said to Anakin?
smallreef October 14, 2013 October 14, 2013 Oh that's pretty, those are probably the only freshwater fish that I like, lol the only really colorful ones...still wouldn't have made me turn a 180 into a fresh tank, but incouldmsee how the ease could draw you there....
Shoelace October 14, 2013 Author October 14, 2013 Thanks Yeah, the cichlids are really cool for fresh. But it wasn't that I was attracted to them, per se. It was more of the fact that I had two young kids, a busy job, yadayada. The tank started to spiral downhill and it was painful. Plus, this was before the days of LED so electricity, cooling, etc were a royal pain. So I made a compromise rather than get totally out of aquariums. My kids are older now and I have a more manageable job, but I think 180 is still too big both cost and time wise. When I see people posting their getting out of the hobby threads, I totally feel their pain.

Haha, well, thank you! You're 40 is a perfect size. I think you made the compromise with the 180 that works. Although it's a shame to have all that space, what you did with it is simple, clean, and looks nice, and importantly, isn't a maintenance nightmare. I don't know how you haven't started to set that up as a reef tank yet (don't say I didn't warn you, I will be of no help reigning in this addiction.) I'm like Gollum when it comes to decisions with tanks.
sachabballi reef October 14, 2013 October 14, 2013 hmmm FOWLR would be soooo simple in that 180...and much less time and expense than a 40B reef tank.... uh oh...I am no help either
Shoelace October 14, 2013 Author October 14, 2013 You guys are not helping me, lol. But really, to ramp up to a 180 the way I want to would cost at least 3-4 times as much as the 40B. I mean going from one LED pendant to three is going from $500 to $1500. Argh! Speaking of Gollum, remember when Galadriel passed the test and was able to resist the ring?
steveoutlaw October 14, 2013 October 14, 2013 You're right, those LEDs would be too expensive..........Unless you went with some of the evergrow fixtures and then the cost would be much less.
YHSublime October 14, 2013 October 14, 2013 Speaking of Gollum, remember when Galadriel passed the test and was able to resist the ring? Not a chance, look who showed up to the party... You're right, those LEDs would be too expensive..........Unless you went with some of the evergrow fixtures and then the cost would be much less. ... AND, if you want to see what the spread would be like, I've got evergrows across my 6'er, you know, if you're interested.

Shoelace October 14, 2013 Author October 14, 2013 Why do I have a distinct feeling all of the members at this AA meeting are bartenders? Alright, pour me a drink, Mister. I have a 180 reef ready a 55 sump with no baffles, a heater, and an Eheim 1262. No live rock, only sand. If I were (and I emphasize IF) to make it a reef again, what should I do to make it a nice souped up Honda Accord reef? I ain't talking to Mercedes. Ideas? Wow me WAMAS!!!

YHSublime October 14, 2013 October 14, 2013 I love how it only took 15 posts. I almost feel bad.... like almost bad enough to host that intervention I told you I wouldn't participate in.
Orion October 14, 2013 October 14, 2013 I had nothing to add, but this... 40B SPS dominate tank. 180 - Awesome FOWLR tank.
