Huly June 18, 2013 June 18, 2013 I don't mean to lol at ya, but once you work out what is happening in that picture, it's pretty funny. Dorrie was trying to get to her cave but he was in her way and refused to move. He tried to grab her, she raised her top fin and flew off then came back to huff and puff some more but the crab would not move. We had to chase him off with tongs (well we were tryto grab the jerk with tongs and he ran off)
L8 2 RISE June 18, 2013 June 18, 2013 For what it's worth: as far as the crab was concerned it was just defending itself- if he had let go of his spot on the rock to run, he would have been easy to grab off the rock. They raise their claws and hold their ground to defend themselves. I'm betting that even if it had pinched the tang, it would've been very brief and just to get it to leave. Nothing about porcelain crabs is made for catching or killing fish- especially large ones- their claws arent made for it and it's not something they do. I love crabs and other inverts in the tank and i think they add a lot of personality and uniqueness to any tank.

Porcelain crabs will not eat your fish they are not equipped for that line of work.

He is super big 3-4" and I have heard some crabs getting more aggessive as they get bigger. I am scared he will hurt my smaller fish. Edited June 18, 2013 by Huly

I am scared he will hurt my smaller fish. The claws really aren't that powerful. He could hurt the fish, but it would probably just be a small scratch or something. The only time he would bother or hurt a fish, it would be the fish's fault for bothering it. Chances are he wouldn't even react to a small fish, but a larger fish like a tang is pretty threatening to it. Porcelain crabs are filter feeders and scavengers, they'll defend themselves and that's it.
Jason Rhoads June 18, 2013 June 18, 2013 My two Porcelain crabs will raise their claws if my Yellow Tang gets too close, but it is pure show. It is not the ruthless efficiency that you would see in an animal that is a hunter.
Jason Rhoads June 18, 2013 June 18, 2013 BTW, the crab in your other post is not a Porcelain crab. I hope that is not what we are discussing here. That crab probably is a killer.

swimmatte June 18, 2013 June 18, 2013 I was actually playing with my largest emerald the other day with a sea squirt. I'd hold it near him and he'd grab on with a claw so I'd take him on a ride..... We repeated this 10 or so times......
L8 2 RISE June 18, 2013 June 18, 2013 When we bought him we were told Porcelain Crab- Filter Feeder and he does filter feed. What might it be? When I first saw the pic I also thought it wasn't an porcelain, then I looked a little closer and I thought it was. It's just a hard pic to tell. Look up pictures of porcelain crabs then look at your crab, I think you have more chance of IDing it than us because you can actually see the crab.

I will also see if I can get a better photo too

I was talking about the crab in your other topic (paranormal tank), the one you caught and people are telling you to kill etc.. That one is not a Porcelain crab. Sorry if I confused the issue
