YHSublime March 18, 2013 March 18, 2013 One of these days I'll stop dominating the "new to the hobby" section. One of my favorite corals, my Toadstool has been pouting lately, ie. no green polyps extending, and it makes me sad. This was shortly after I had added some snails, and it looks like one of them may have left a slime trail over them, but that's just speculation. I took a closer look today, and snapped some pictures. One thing that really boggles my mind is that my tank is crawling with Amphipods, some of which you'll see all over my toadstool photo. I'd never seen them in my biocube, and now all of a sudden, I see them everywhere. Am I just looking harder? Anyways, I'm rambling. Point is, toadstool was doing fine, until a couple of days ago, I have not seen it "open up" since. My other Fiji Yellow is doing great, and they aren't far apart. Is this uncommon? Should I be worried? I've also noticed these spots building on my glass. I don't think it's glass, it looks like maybe just hard brown algae, can this be confirmed or denied? It takes a bit of elbow grease to get off with a sponge. I've also noticed that I have snail eggs laid on my glass. It's amazing how much life I have seen so much quicker in the 57 then I ever saw in the BC14, which seems strange.
surf&turf March 18, 2013 March 18, 2013 Leathers will do that, they will close up and usually shed when they do. That cleans them of any algae that may be trying to grow on them.
Jason Rhoads March 18, 2013 March 18, 2013 Totally normal for a toadstool. Breath easy, it looks like it is doing well! You will see them (and some other softies) do that from time to time. It will extend polyps in a day or two.
YHSublime March 23, 2013 Author March 23, 2013 Just an update, here, still no extending, It's been about a week and a half (I posted this after a couple of days of it happening already.) should I try moving it to another part of the tank?Give it a revive dip? Just let it be?

YHSublime March 23, 2013 Author March 23, 2013 I had 2 hydor koralia powerheads and another one rated for a 75 gallon tank. I just got an MP40 which is on random right now, and all the corals appear to be loving it (Past 24 hours.). The GSP which is about 6 inches away is getting a great mixed flow (it's right in line with the toadstool pictured above.) Also in line is my Yellow Fiji which is doing wonderful as well. It's maddening.

My overflow box covers the back center, my options are limited to the sides with my current rock work. I did inspect it this evening though, and it appears to be shedding. I think seeing as most of these lps and softies came out from compact florescents to a 250W halide, they are warming up and acclimating.

YHSublime March 25, 2013 Author March 25, 2013 back in action today. I looked last night, and it was literally shedding off a thin layer, polpys have slowly begun to come out, I expect to see it in full swing tomorrow or the next day. Researched it, and leathers do shed! Nature, you so cool!

We had two of them lately in the main frag tank that began this process at the same time. One shedded after 2-3 days and then opened back up better than ever. The other took a week longer than the first to go through the same process. Just like all of us...some are faster/more efficient than others .
monkiboy March 26, 2013 March 26, 2013 (edited) yeah, my tyree neon toad does this about once every five weeks or so and usually looks a bit bigger, more extension, and brighter than the time before. sometimes it'll have two sheddings back to back with one or two days of full extension between. here he has just wrapping up his latest shed cycle, the shedded skin floating and polyps beginning to come back out: Edited March 26, 2013 by monkiboy
