treesprite March 14, 2013 March 14, 2013 A single frag RTN-ed on me while I was at work today - went from beautiful blue to wasted white in a matter of hours. Everything else is fine, its just this one little frag of hoeksemai. What kinds of things besides water chemistry can make that happen? The frag wasn't in touching range of another coral. I'm wondering if perhaps it had flesh blown off by flow rather than had a true RTN event (my WAV broke, so I've got non-stop water flow rather than intermittent, and I don;t think the corals are happy about it).
Coral Hind March 14, 2013 March 14, 2013 It would have to be really strong to blow healthy tissue off. Was it a fresh cut frag or newly introduced? Maybe an infection from the cut or change in water parameters. If another coral slimed lately and that landed on the frag it could kill it. If it was recently moved to a higher light that could kill it.
treesprite March 14, 2013 Author March 14, 2013 I picked it up from someone at the last meeting. I had a combination of bumping a powerhead slightly out of position the night before, and having a return pointed that direction from the opposite side. So the coral was getting it non-stop from all around (due to my WAV being broken, which means the return flow is constant instead of gradually transitioning from 0 to low to high alternating with the returns from the other side). The powerhead isn't usually there, but I put it in there when my pump broke and didn't take it back out, because then the WAV stopped working so the flow is not diverse enough.
Big Country March 14, 2013 March 14, 2013 Who knows, I've had a nice aussie colony in my tank for at least 6 months and the other day it just started turning white, is almost totally white now, haven't done a water change or added anything new in that time, sometimes things just happen I guess.
treesprite March 15, 2013 Author March 15, 2013 I'm wondering if a snail was messing with it. A few times in the past I've had snails sitting on montis for hours at a time leaving dead spots (now when I see snails on corals, I pull them off).
GraffitiSpotCorals March 15, 2013 March 15, 2013 Yup when my wav broke the same thing happened. The magnets in all the wav's I have had split and rusted. One after I took it off line and the other while it was in the tank.
treesprite March 15, 2013 Author March 15, 2013 (edited) Yup when my wav broke the same thing happened. The magnets in all the wav's I have had split and rusted. One after I took it off line and the other while it was in the tank. Did you ask Bruce to help you with them? He's the bomb when it comes to backing his product. He replaced part of mine a few years ago, and right now I'm just biding my time until I see him so I can try to get it fixed again. I took the WAV out and replaced the section with straight pipe for now. It will just take a couple snips with PVC cutters to put it back online. I'd like to know how to fix it myself so I can keep it forever - I have not been able to find anything similar anywhere. FYI, I got mine from a WAMAS meeting raffle! I'd like to see more hobbyist inventions or creations in the raffles. Edited March 15, 2013 by treesprite
