Jan March 8, 2013 March 8, 2013 I may have over dosed Mag but all my other readings are fine cal 500 dkh 10 phosphate 0 nitrates .5 SG 1.026 temp 78.6 dosing 2 part, reef bio fuel and microbacter7. Feeding Jan's Natural Reef Foods 2-3x daily. Oh and I have green algae on some of the white spots of my SPS. I suspect that is from 2 year old MH's that were replaced this morning. Correct me if I'm wrong. thanks. Jan
Coral Hind March 8, 2013 March 8, 2013 I think it could be a burn from the new lamps but I wouldn't think algae would grow on them so fast. How long have they been white?
Jan March 8, 2013 Author March 8, 2013 No. the tips have been white for a week. The lamps just went on at 9am.
Guest March 8, 2013 March 8, 2013 Did you or have you measured PAR? Any changes in flow? Has the temp ever spiked or been unstable? I've noticed with SPS that one bad thing is enough to hurt or damage them but they will recover. If you have an aquarium controller you could look on the computer for a history on all devices. Maybe the water level dropped without you knowing due to an electrical issue? Just my thoughts.
Jan March 8, 2013 Author March 8, 2013 No, have not measured PAR. No, no changes to flow, temp or anything. don't have a controller. No, no drop in water level. Did you or have you measured PAR? Jan March 8, 2013 Author March 8, 2013 I did change my GFO 7 days ago and increased it a little. Could that have been the culprit? It isn;t all SPS just a few. It's on the very tips. Like something brushed against the tops.
Guest March 8, 2013 March 8, 2013 I believe that having a reef tank without a controller is like flying blind. It can easily be done without, but you are taking a great risk. If anything happens it will tell you. I remember when my tank lost power for 2-3 hours over night. Never would have known if it were not for the emails. Thank god for battery back up. Knowing the PAR on an SPS tank also is critical. I wouldn't even put certain high end or very sensitive acro's in tank if I didnt know the PAR. Way to risky.
Jan March 8, 2013 Author March 8, 2013 Ok. Thanks. I'll consider it at some point but not a priority. I have a battery back up and generator and it's a pretty stable system. also don;t have the money for a controller right now or anytime soon. F&Fmgr March 9, 2013 March 9, 2013 Carbon dosing with an Alk above 9 will do it +1 IME as well. Especially with NO3 and PO4 that low...
Jan March 9, 2013 Author March 9, 2013 Ok guys. Tell me why? The chemistry is what I always have trouble with. Splain to me, please. +1 IME as well. Especially with NO3 and PO4 that low...
Origami March 10, 2013 March 10, 2013 Ok guys. Tell me why? The chemistry is what I always have trouble with. Splain to me, please. Probably not chemistry, Jan, but biology. It's something that's been observed. I've never read anything conclusive about why. The same is mentioned here http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-08/nftt/index.php. (Sent from my phone)
Jan March 10, 2013 Author March 10, 2013 This is exactly what some of my corals look like. Thank you, Tom. Probably not chemistry, Jan, but biology. It's something that's been observed. Jan March 13, 2013 Author March 13, 2013 This really stinks. the tips wont stop turning white. I've stopped dosing and done partial water changes. They are also getting a little cyano.
basser9 March 13, 2013 March 13, 2013 Carbon dosing is always a tricky thing and in my experience once you get white tips on sps or Bacterial infections on fish you are very close to a potential tank wipe out. Red slime outbreaks usually follow and can be real bad. A high DOC level is always a concern and i would run alot of carbon and turn off the lights for a day. There is know such thing as 0 po levels you need to have someone with a HANNA phos tester see what your levels are as they may of dropped to low......
Jan March 13, 2013 Author March 13, 2013 Oh. this is why one angel and the pyramid got sick and died. Now the SPS tips are getting white. I'm getting a little cyano now. Great. I just sold my phosphate hannah checker. I never took to it. Ok. Will leave lights off and continue with water changes. dosing stopped last week. Thank you,
Jan March 18, 2013 Author March 18, 2013 Tips are still white. It spread a little further down but looks to have stopped. Now they're getting a little cyano :-(
Jan March 18, 2013 Author March 18, 2013 Today it's 5 dkh. Yesterday it was 8. I stopped dosing because I'm not sure what to do.
Jan March 18, 2013 Author March 18, 2013 Why would dosing carbon and having high alk cause cyano blooms and bacterial infections?
Bobby March 18, 2013 March 18, 2013 So I am new but any time I am having problems I do water changes. I have done them before 10 gallons each day for a week to get things back in order. That was on a 120. Just my 2 cents.
