bertsch February 13, 2013 February 13, 2013 I was in the basement today and all of a sudden i started to hear a noise very similar to what a washer or dryer makes when they are done, but this noise was coming from my external pump that runs the closed loop. I checked the intake and outputs to make sure something wasnt stuck and didnt see anything. So I plugged the pump back in and the noise kicked off immediatly. Any idea what the noise could be, its god awful and the pump isnt pushing any water. By the way, I do not know the model as its not in a good spot for me to check, but i do know it is approxamtly three years old
Origami February 13, 2013 February 13, 2013 Is the impeller turning? Is the pump squealing? Could it be a bearing seizing?
bertsch February 13, 2013 Author February 13, 2013 I would say no to the impeller moving, as the only sound i am getting is this god awful hum or buzzing sound when I plug it in. By the way as best i can tell this is a little giant pump modle 581507, 1100 GPH.
Origami February 13, 2013 February 13, 2013 Sounds like the motor's failed or a bearing has seized from what you're describing. The hum is coming from the motor coils probably. It doesn't look good for that pump from the sounds of things. I may have a similar pump at home that I've not used personally, but got from a member here if you're interested. You're quite a ways away, though. You have plenty of in-tank circulation going now to keep the tank well oxygenated, right? Where are your heaters? If in the sump and, if you don't have circulation from the main pump any longer, you're going to need to put some heaters in the display to keep it from cooling too much.
Jon Lazar February 13, 2013 February 13, 2013 In the mean time, you could take the pump apart and check the impeller for debris or calcium build up that might be stopping the impeller from turning.
bertsch February 13, 2013 Author February 13, 2013 Right now the heaters are in the sump and that pump is working fine. Without the closed loop the circulation is light and will need to be addressed, but at the moment I only have a single Maroon in the tank as I am in hoping to consolidate tanks in the near future. I am going to have to sit down and plan this out as getting behind the tank to swap out the pump is darn near impossible,
Origami February 14, 2013 February 14, 2013 Sorry. The pump that I have at home is a Pan World NH-40PX and smaller than what you have by a factor of 2. It's also 3/4 in 3/4 out. (Sent from my phone)
Coral Hind February 14, 2013 February 14, 2013 The little giant pumps should be oiled as part of your yearly maintenance. If you can get to it a little oil might help if it isn't too late. You can see the oil hole in this picture. Some models have a hole on each end.
bertsch February 14, 2013 Author February 14, 2013 I did not know the pump should have been oiled, when I get home I will try to get some oil in there. Thanks for the info
