Looking for a recommendation

Can anybody recommend a good thread or online article about sump design/setup?

I want to change my tank from HOB everything (which has worked well for over 4.5 years) and make a nice sump setup.

Instead of asking a bunch of questions, I figure there must be a mother-of-all sump thread out there somewhere for me to read.

Thanks.

When I starting doing this two years ago or so I was referred to this guy:

http://www.melevsreef.com/allmysumps.html

,

and learned a lot from him. I also watched a few things on youtube. Then I went out, cut my baffles the wrong size, got mad and now use a 40g breeder.

Since that time I have ran into the guys at Aquatic Obsession who build a series of really nice custom sumps. Check them out.

main question is how big of an area do you have for a sump. Also, are you going to be drilling your tank or running an overflow box?

It has to fit under a 20 gallon. I have a sump already, just not hooked up. I will be using an overflow box.

I was more interested in optimizing the setup, so topics about flow, bubble traps, fuge design, ATO, water levels, securing plumbing, etc.

Will check out Melevsreef right now. Thanks.

Actually, I am the self proclaimed master of designing sumps. I have about 50 under the belt...

You need a silent water intake of some sort that eliminates salt creep.

You need an area for the skimmer.

You need an area for accessories or a RDSB.

You need a baffle to eliminate micro bubbles and or to hold a mechanical filter sponge.

You need an area for the return pump.

The sump needs to be made of 1/4" reinforced acrylic that doesn't leak.

The simpler you make it, the more efficient it will be.
