tightline September 8, 2012 September 8, 2012 ok got a new tank it has 2 1 1/2 in bulkheads the bottom for overflow that have been remoned for transport my question is should i put a lil bit of sylicone around top and bottom of bulkheads?? and how tight do you gat them im SCARED of cracking the glass
wvreef September 8, 2012 September 8, 2012 I have never ised any silcone myself on these, make sure the rubber hasket is clean and the imside bottom of the tank is clean of all trash so it will seal. I only tighten mine as tight as I can get it with my hand Hope thia helps
bill stine September 8, 2012 September 8, 2012 There should be no need to use any silicone as long as the surfaces are clean as stated by wvreef, make sure the gasket is on the inside of the tank and only tighten hand tight plus a quarter turn with a wrench, any more and you risk deforming the rubber gasket and it wont seal effectively. Good luck
Jon Lazar September 8, 2012 September 8, 2012 No to silicone sealant, but I put a very light layer of silicone grease on seals and o-rings to keep them from drying out.

treesprite September 8, 2012 September 8, 2012 Is everyone talking about just under the bulkhead, or are you including on the outside of the tank around the outer edge?
Origami September 9, 2012 September 9, 2012 No to silicone sealant, but I put a very light layer of silicone grease on seals and o-rings to keep them from drying out. +2 Just be sure that you don't tighten the nut so tight that the gasket squeezes out from under the flange. Is everyone talking about just under the bulkhead, or are you including on the outside of the tank around the outer edge? For me, just on both sides of the rubber gasket. Sometimes the threads, but not often. Silicone grease, not sealant. I never use silicone sealant on bulkheads.
treesprite September 10, 2012 September 10, 2012 I meant to say silicone sealant not the grease, but you answered the question either way.
