steveoutlaw July 31, 2012 July 31, 2012 I'm thinking about using the black heater hose for my return to help cut down on algea build up. Has anyone used this before? any reason why I shouldn't?
Ryan S July 31, 2012 July 31, 2012 (edited) I don't think it's reef safe. Probably leeches crap into the water. Another source. Edited July 31, 2012 by Ryan S
Coral Hind July 31, 2012 July 31, 2012 I agree if it is the automotive heater hose then I don't think I would use it. Can you use spa flex instead?
smallreef July 31, 2012 July 31, 2012 some Home Depot's (not woodbridges of course) carry a black water line hose... I have used it MANY times in the past for my return line and never had an issue... Had it for 4 years on my 150g for 2 return pumps...

Is your return pump external and out of the water? You could wrap the hose in electrical tape to block the light.
steveoutlaw July 31, 2012 Author July 31, 2012 Nope, the pump is a submersible. Ok, back to the drawing board.
mogurnda July 31, 2012 July 31, 2012 Why not something like this: black flex tube. I have used it a lot in the past.
steveoutlaw July 31, 2012 Author July 31, 2012 Why not something like this: black flex tube. I have used it a lot in the past. Too thin for me. I found some 3/4" flex PVC that I can get.
L8 2 RISE July 31, 2012 July 31, 2012 I don't know if it's the same thing, but they do make black vinyl/plastic tubing that's the same as the clear stuff only black. I believe HD/Lowe's carry it. I've used it on many tanks and it's fine.
epleeds July 31, 2012 July 31, 2012 BRK carries black pond hose. I have used it for years on my return pump for my old 75 gallon with no ill effects.
hypertech July 31, 2012 July 31, 2012 (edited) I use black silicon tubing. Its great. Prevents algae growth and provides good isolation from vibration. Edited July 31, 2012 by hypertech
ToddR July 31, 2012 July 31, 2012 radiator hose is reinforced with metal fibers, I wouldn't use it on a reef tank. Check out a local pool and spa outlet. They will have what you are looking for. Probably cheaper than aquarium specific stuff.
