Fishie July 25, 2012 July 25, 2012 i planned on keeping couple mollies in the reef being that they are brackkish water and are known to do well in a reef setting so i drop accilmated it yesterday over 4 hours....tossed it in by around midnight... woke up this morning and saw one in the vortech sticking out and the other near a brain coral dead i watched them for about 15 minutes in the night after they were in and they were swimming around fine. not sure what to make of it...are they just unaware of things like a vortech...with a lack of a sense of direction or should i acclimate them even longer...or is this just a plain bad idea to begin with i liked the idea of having them because they are good alage eaters and they would supply a good source of live food with the babies they seem to produce easily and frequently
smallreef July 25, 2012 July 25, 2012 You need to acclimate slower...over 8 hours and up to 12have depending with keeping a close eye on the salinity.. they may be brackish but they cannot become saltwater that quickly....
smallreef July 25, 2012 July 25, 2012 And you may want to turn off your powerheads the first night...

Actually that's not exactly true- I acclimated 3 prs of Lyretail Mollies even 1 that was pregnant in just around 4 hours from 1.000 to 1.025. Zero issues. The pregnant Molly even had healthy fry. I have 5 of the original 6 after 2 months. I believe the missing fish wandered into the shrimp/basslet cave....
treesprite July 26, 2012 July 26, 2012 I play with the idea of keeping mollies now and then, when I feel like I need some fresh food. What do you think about putting a few pairs in the refugium? Will they eat all my macros?

zygote2k July 26, 2012 July 26, 2012 mine graze constantly on the walls of the tank eating the green film.
treesprite July 28, 2012 July 28, 2012 FYI, mollies are actually supposed to be more prolific reproductively in salt water than fresh water. My main purpose in getting them would be to have live food.
