from NBC weather: http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Area-Under-Severe-Thunderstorm-Watch-162890366.html

A combination of high heat and a strong cold front is giving way to powerful storms Wednesday afternoon.

A severe thunderstorm watch for the region around remains through 9 p.m. Affected areas include the District; Anne Arundel, Calvert, Howard, Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland, and Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun and Prince William in Virginia.

A severe thunderstorm warning for Montgomery, Prince George's, Anne Arundel, Fairfax, Arlington and Fairfax counties as well as Falls Church expires at 5 p.m.

It's not just our region facing down storms. A large swath of land from Indiana to New Jersey could see severe weather Wednesday through about 10 p.m., said Storm4 meteorologist Tom Kierein.

As of 4:17 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was detected near Chevy Chase and Bethesda, moving east at 15 mph. The storm has the potential for quarter-sized hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph.

It may also produce heavy downpours, leading to ponding or flooding on roadways, said Storm4 meteorologist Veronica Johnson. Never try to drive through standing water, and be vigilant because heavy rain could reduce visibility.

The National Weather Service is calling the storm dangerous, and advises residents in its path to stay inside away from windows.

Thanks for the headsup, Steve!

Everyone be careful out there.

seriously if the last power outage has not been enough to scare serious tank keepers, take another warning! at least get a battery powered air pump and stone, think of it as insurance for your tank.

john

About 2 hours ago the lights in the grocery store flickered off. I was like, dang they better not go off after I picked out all this stuff! (i.e., no cash register to pay)

Scared me too. Just got home last night from week vacation and found my 5 gallons ATO 5 ran out of water. Turned out that my overflow box lost siphoning (don't know why??). Got everything running again and the light started to flickered. I am thinking to myself, oh crap!! not again!! But thank goodness no power lost. This morning I checked my tank and seem to have lost a yellow tang during my vacationsad.gif.
