Tracy G July 13, 2012 July 13, 2012 Does it help to have a UV sterilizer? I have heard a lot of mixed reviews and wanted to see if it's worth the investment.
jimlin July 13, 2012 July 13, 2012 i use it on my planted fresh water to control green water and algae. i rarely use the one for the reef tank. i only use it when i buy a new fish during quarantine and when i see signs of ick on the fishes. although it is rather expensive, it has cured my fish of ick on multiple occassion. for me it was worth the money.

Sharkey18 July 13, 2012 July 13, 2012 (edited) I LOVE my UV. Won't run a tank without it. I ran without one for years but since I added it my fish are much healthier. I think it helps keep some parasite numbers down giving the fish a better chance to fight it off if necessary. Edited July 13, 2012 by Sharkey18
Jan July 13, 2012 July 13, 2012 It helps keep algae down as well as disease. I was hesitant about it at first, but now I'm a believer. I wont run a system without it.
Ryan S July 13, 2012 July 13, 2012 (edited) I love mine. Here is some good information on them. This is the unit I use on my 150g reef. $98 new, and bulbs are only $18 each. Edited July 13, 2012 by Ryan S
Coral Hind July 13, 2012 July 13, 2012 I think it helps keep some parasite numbers down giving the fish a better chance to fight it off if necessary. That is the same reason why I like to run them. I don't think they cure but they help control the numbers of parasites which reduces stress on the fish.
PotomacBoater July 13, 2012 July 13, 2012 I notice that the 15W one you recommend only has a 350 GPH throughput, Did you have to add the diverter valve for the rest of the return flow?
Ryan S July 13, 2012 July 13, 2012 I notice that the 15W one you recommend only has a 350 GPH throughput, Did you have to add the diverter valve for the rest of the return flow? I hooked it up to a maxi jet 1200 (295 gph); so I didn't need the diverter.
treesprite July 13, 2012 July 13, 2012 If you are dosing a carbon source or bacteria, you might want to give it a second thought. I have a small UV sterilizer I only use for QT.
