Any suggestions for capturing a hippo in a heavly scaped 70g cube. I came to the conclusion last night that catching dori will not be easy and removing the rock is not an option. Looking for any suggestions. This fish is fat, fast, and outgrowing the tank. Thanks

you can try making this:

to catch 2 smaller fish last week, i went with a recommendation from Jan, which was turn the lights out. wait 3 hours. then turn the actinics on and swoop in and catch the fish while they were dazed. worked great.

2 nets can also work if you have someone "shooing" the fish towards the other net.

I guess I can try the bottle trap. I did this before with a smaller fish but was unsure if this large of a fish would work. I'll put it in tonight and just observe. Catching at night would be ideal except he rests in the rock work at night so not an option.

Mike Mann has a fish trap for sale as well for $20. Sells for $40 on DFS. It's basically a nice version of the 2L bottle. Another option for you.

Thanks for the advise. Hopefully I can get him. I do know he loves to eat, so I should have a chance! LOL

Not too long ago someone showed me how he feeds his fish with a net to get them used to going into the net. You may want to try feeding with a large net, if you have the time. Doris are piggys.

I have a similar problem. Trying to catch a velvet damsel (3+ inches) in a 125G reef mix. I am sure most rookie reefer made this same mistake on this fish.

I got it on a packet deal with a blood shrimp. I did check him out for reef compatibility. all online fish store classified it as a reef-safe. anyway, finally caught him rearranging my smaller polyps/corals on rocks (some 4-5 times it size). That when I realized the reason why some of my corals died suddenly for no appearance reasons. So he got to go! to the refugium.

He is definitely a smart fish. Will eats chopped shrimp off my hand but as soon as he see the net, he's gone.

Please update on bottle trap. I like to give it try it if it works.<br class="Apple-interchange-newline">

Damsels are fast and dumb. Catch them hours after lights are out at night. Turn lights on and they're dopey. Move fast. Once they wake up they move really fast. They are quite easy to catch at night.

This velvet damsel hid behind and under my rocks. He shifts sand and made underground caves. Every time I pushes the sand back to cover those caves, he dug them out again and again. I tried several nights to look for him, but he hid somewhere under the rocks. I am going try the bottle fish traps to see if I can catch. I really don't to hurt the little guy with hooks as suggested above. After all, I am the one who put him in there.

Caught it yet? I tried 3 days with 2 bottle traps already with no luck. Traps many fish but not the one I want to removed. hook and shrimp next!

I've had good luck catching fish with this fish trap. I copied the design from something I found online, and modified it to my specs.

Everyone should remember when aquascaping their tanks, that there may be a future need to catch a fish out of it.
