GraffitiSpotCorals May 4, 2012 May 4, 2012 So I gotta figure out what I am going to use as a wave maker. All the plumbing on this closed loop will be from the bottom of the tank. As far as I know my only options are swcd and ocean motion. Ocean motions are supposed to be better but the guy isnt selling them so they are expensive and who knows how customer service will be. The other one i have seen lots of bad reviews on but it is cheap. So are these my only options?
GraffitiSpotCorals May 4, 2012 Author May 4, 2012 Ye they would put me greatly I debt and screw the viewable from all 4 sides look.
steveoutlaw May 4, 2012 May 4, 2012 why don't you see if Bruce (bbatv) can make you some Wave Action Valves? From what I hear, they perform great and last longer than the Squids.
GraffitiSpotCorals May 4, 2012 Author May 4, 2012 I use them on the other tanks but they cant be used under a tank on a closed loop.
GraffitiSpotCorals May 4, 2012 Author May 4, 2012 Does anyone use or has anyone used one of thoes swcd wave makers or what ever they are called? Seems like its really they cheapest and best option.

I used one on my 75 but it wasn't on a closed loop, it was on my return. They are limited to the amount of flow they can handle (without mods), and they didn't alternate back and forth as quickly as I would have liked.
GraffitiSpotCorals May 4, 2012 Author May 4, 2012 But you had no problems with it? How long did you run it? I am not worried about how often it turns over it's not for actual waves, more for random flow.

GraffitiSpotCorals May 5, 2012 Author May 5, 2012 I think I am going to try one, I will just make sure there is not way anything can get into the intake and hope it runs okay.
Grav May 5, 2012 May 5, 2012 Theree are no "good" CL wavemaker options. Did you consider tunzes on a wavemaker?
davelin315 May 5, 2012 May 5, 2012 I wouldn't use a SCWD on a closed loop. It would do better under less pressure which is what a closed loop is, but at the same time, I wouldn't use it. It's not exactly the sturdiest construction and I've seen them crack and fail very often. That said, knock on wood, I've been using the same one on a return for the past 3-4 years without any cleanings and it still works great. On a closed loop, however, especially under the tank... would not ever try that personally. Get an OM, I love mine. Wasn't aware that he wasn't making them any longer. The other alternative is to ask Dan and Justin to build one. They love to create new stuff and can fabricate lots of things. I'm sure they could build one with the same motors they use for the kalk stirrers although who knows if they have the time.
GraffitiSpotCorals May 5, 2012 Author May 5, 2012 If I am going to do powerheads it's going to be one k4 just to get some random flow, tunze and vortech or WAY to expensive for me. Plus this tank I want to have as little plugs as possible. So with the squid it would be one less to worry about. I really want to try the squid but like you said I have read bad things. But I am guessing most of them are from people who don't know how to use them, example, tightening clamps to tight and breaking them or letting stuff get into the unit and having it lock up. Only thing I do not like is the hose fittings you have to use which I do not lime to use. Getting avast to build something seems like a LONG shot since I still haven't gotten a price estimate for a large calcium reactor. I think they must have their hands full with the new line they are making. I think I may plumb it up and see how it works without one, it's only a 1100 gph pump on the loop so the squid should work okay I would think. Thanks for the I put guys!
F&Fmgr May 5, 2012 May 5, 2012 sqwds cant handle the back pressure from the non input port. they tend to freeze. the only viable option would be check valves above each port
GraffitiSpotCorals May 5, 2012 Author May 5, 2012 (edited) sqwds cant handle the back pressure from the non input port. they tend to freeze. the only viable option would be check valves above each port How would check valves effect the back pressure on the powerhead side? Seems like as long as they are open the back pressure is still going to be there. By the way this tank is 12" tall if that makes a difference... If anyone wants to give me some vortechs to make waves I would be glad to take them! Edited May 5, 2012 by Piper27
rioreef May 6, 2012 May 6, 2012 From the Ocean Motions web page... "OceansMotions has recently been impacted by a number of issues, a health issue has laid me up and I am still recovering. Manufacturing has slowed to a point where the machine shop had to be closed. OM product motors have been discontinued at local levels, and prices have substantially increased from the manufacturer. I have decided for the moment to put on hold making the OM product line as it was and redesign certain products with the latest technology available. I am presently sourcing components to service new and existing customers. Many thanks to all that have supported us in the past and we look forward to the future with new and enhanced products. Paul"
GraffitiSpotCorals May 6, 2012 Author May 6, 2012 Yea that's why I was leaning towards a squid. I couldn't find any ocean motion for sale with a quick search and them being out of business makes spending a lot of money on one even more hard for me to do. Sean can you explain how to set up a squid the right way under the tank? I am kinda lost as to why it won't work.
