I was told to keep my temp below 78 degrees. Its reading at 80 degrees. I am using a basic coral life digial thermometer. I have the probe in the back of the tank about an 2 inches below the surface. Its a red sea max 130 and i have the cooling fan running too.

80 degrees is OK shouldn't hurt anything. Get a chiller if you want stable water temp.

+1

I use a small clip on fan from wal mart to cool my 180 keeps it between 77-78 all the time

80 is perfect!! I hate when books or unknowledgeable store help recommends keeping a tank at 76 to 78F unless you have a specific item that came form cooler waters. Most reefs where our corals come from are going to be about 80F or higher unless they come from deeper waters or an area near a trench where colder water is forced up. Tonga is on of those cooler water areas because of a nearby trench. I would keep the tank between 77 and 83, stability is the key.

This is a nice read: http://www.coralfilm.com/about.html

Bed Bath and Beyond carries cheap clip-on fans all year long . A little fan goes a long way. 80 isn't bad, but you may as well figure out how to deal with it before it warms up in the spring.

80 isn't bad, but a bit high for me (a personal preference). However, I don't trust the Coralife digital thermometer very much. While they can be consistent, I've seen them be off by as much as two degrees.

Tom, whats a good thermometer you would recommend??

The temp is staying at 80.4

see HERE.

They also have a dual stage controller that can control both a chiller and heater. Tyhe gold standard in temp control.

Just for accuracy, I keep a NIST-traceable glass thermometer around that I use to check my electronic thermometers from time to time. That's how I found out that my first thermometers (little Coralife digital thermometers) were off. If you go this route, expect to spend $15-$20 or so.

Here's something similar to the one that I have that I Googled up:

I also have a Ranco monitoring the temperature and it's normally pretty accurate.

Woke this am and the temp was 76 uggh

Scott, there will almost always be a few degrees of temperature swing in most tanks. If you ran a chiller / heater combo, you can tighten this down to a degree or so.

I run an apex controller on my system and my temp goes from 77-78 very very very rarley will it go above 78 and I have no chiller at all on my system....2-300watt heaters and one clip on fan....on a 180 gallon system....your house temp will effect your tanks temp as well....like if you have a digital controller on your heating system to let the temp drop from lets say 77 when home and 75 when you sleep then your tank will also adjust along with the temp of your house....I keep my temp at 77 on my heating and cooling in my house....if i get hot just turn on a fan....hope this helps...

I was running at 82-83* and I went the clip on fan route last week. Now my temp stays between 77-79 all the time. No need for a chiller just set up a fan and a heater and you will wind up right where you need it. This is on my 220g

I should have said, "with most AIO (all in one) nano tanks with closed lids."

Now, in my case, I did run a small 1/13 HP chiller on this tank when I had it in my wife's home office because it was across from a window that put a solar load on the tank, raising the temperature. However, when I had it in the front living room, I never had to use a chiller because the temperature never got high enough to warrant one (in my opinion).

Ok guys with the fan off it was 77 this morning as it was last night. I think im starting to get it to a normal steady temp now!

Just to confirm that the temp is staying at 77 with lights on and 76 with them off at night. wahoo temp is set now.
