Hello, I'm a newbie and will be setting up a 72 gal salt water aquarium with coral and fish.

I'm still in the early stages of setting it up and wanted some recommendations for the filtration.

Right now I'm looking at getting a protein skimmer and also a canister filter for extra filtration in addition to live rock.

What are the pros \ cons with such a setup.

while im on hold,

suggest a good skimmer (avast marine makes one of my favorites and they are local and a sponsor)

not a huge fan of the cannister filters, i know my inlaws have a few cannister filters that they are trying to sell if you decide they are what you want just let me know.

do as much reading as you can, google is great for finding stuff.

Wamas, adavanced aquarist, reefkeeping, etc etc.

and welcome

I had an undergravel and Eheim canister bio filter with my first set ups many many years ago. Now that there are skimmers I don't see the need for both a skimmer and canister filter. I think the canister is a little over kill with a skimmer, especially with a new set up. Canisster as a back up is a really great idea the problem is bio media. so make sure you have a sponge in your system somehwere to establish the bio.

I love the ASM skimmers and the bubble magus.

Welcome  Is your saltwater tank drlled for an overflow? if not consider a hob overflow and sump where you can place a good skimmer.

most of us have a protein skimmer, sump, drilled tank, powerheads of some sort, reverse osmosis, and strong lighting.

type/brand is up to you and the amount you can afford.

if you follow this basic recipe, you'll be more or less successful depending on your level of attention.

that's it in a nutshell.
