Tampico96 March 23, 2011 March 23, 2011 I bought a used skimmer and wondered what model it is.... is this the CS1? I also ordered a new pump today because you will note in the one photo that the sicce wire has the insulation coming loose. Was there ever a cover on the back of this pump? the baskside looks to be missing something.
Origami March 23, 2011 March 23, 2011 "Older." LOL. Yeah, that looks like a CS1 with a swabbie on top. Not sure if the gate valve on the side was standard, but it's a nice option to have to help set the level inside the skimmer.
Coral Hind March 23, 2011 March 23, 2011 I was just at Avast's production center and I mentioned this thread to them. Once he gets today's orders out the door he plans to respond to you.
Tampico96 March 23, 2011 Author March 23, 2011 One of his "today's orders" belongs to me. so will will let him carry on and take a look later Is it not older? Thats how it was sold to me. just want to verify that the 150-200gallon estimate is close to right. Its very well built. I just got the impression that it was prior to cs1 or a proto.
Tampico96 March 23, 2011 Author March 23, 2011 (edited) So that is the 2nd time i've botched the use of that word. I'm going to never describe something as old. And proof read about a dozen times before I hit send. Last week a had a raffle here at work for "Old ladies restroom lockers" My desk phone, cell phone and email exploded. Made sense to me when I wrote it. Edited March 23, 2011 by Tampico96
Chad March 23, 2011 March 23, 2011 ^lol, that is hillarious! With requests to buy raffle tickets I am sure It looks like a totally innocent mistake
Origami March 23, 2011 March 23, 2011 Here you go. This is from July 2010. It had a gate valve. http://glassbox-design.com/2010/avast-marine-diy-cone-skimmer/ By late 2010 / early 2011, the pump moved under the cone's body in the "Peg-Leg" version. It had a different gate valve structure. http://reefbuilders.com/2010/11/29/preview-pegleg-2011-avast-cone-skimmer-diy-kit/
Tampico96 March 23, 2011 Author March 23, 2011 I agree with the july 2010 model. The proportions on mine seem different. Not sure if its camera angles or what. My collection cup seems huge. I do feel better that it will be sized well for my setup. I'm going with a 125 instead of the 150 due to tank depth. and then I plan on having a 135gallon sump that will most likely have something shy of 100gallons.

The collection cup definitely has a different aspect ratio. Dan says he'll be dropping in to look. I'm sure that he'll know right off the bat what you have. It may be an early version or prototype as somebody's mentioned.
Tampico96 March 24, 2011 Author March 24, 2011 The raffle tickets were free. problem was 650 employees only 300 lockers and they were groups of 3 so only 100 people could get free old lady lockers.

That is a "crossover" model from the Grey Seas Aquatics to Avast transition days, around this time last year. Basically the only difference between that skimmer and the original CS1 kit is the larger cup, 8" on yours vs. 6" on the kit. The cone body is the same size. That is also an original grey-cord Swabbie, possibly one of the first 30 or so made after the initial prototypes. As a result, you may need to send it in for rewiring, as we changed the motor wiring to produce more torque. If it works as-is, it is not necessary to send in, but if you see periodic blade reversing or sticking, then best to let us fix it for you. The Sicce pumps usually don't include a back to hide the green epoxy. No idea why. I think some of our PSK 1000s have them though, if so I will make sure you get one. Justin
Tampico96 March 24, 2011 Author March 24, 2011 Thanks Justin Will keep an eye on the swabbie. I did not know that the exposed epoxy was how the pump was made. The need for a back is not a big deal for me. My first impression of the 2500 that is currently on it was "hey that looks broken" Glad to hear the history of the unit I have. still working on the fish room and hope to have all up and running by july. will send the swabbie in if I notice issues.
OldReefer April 3, 2011 April 3, 2011 That is a really nice skimmer by the way. I have the CS2 version from the same time period. The new pinwheel and special venturi that is now available are great upgrades. They improve performace and make the sicce more reliable on start-up. I also had the very early Swabbie. It is best to get the wiring upgrade while your system is down.
