treesprite March 15, 2011 March 15, 2011 Wondering if anyone else has problems with very young pair of clowns (trying to make them a pair) not getting along, like when they are too young for either to have already changed to a female. My misbars are both very young, no bigger than an inch. I got them at 2 different times. One is slightly bigger than the other. Both were from shop tanks with at least a dozen other juvie clowns in them. The big one has been chasing and nipping the smaller one, and sometimes the fish wag their back ends at each other very aggressively. In spite of that, they still hang out together most of the time. The smaller one has a couple obvious snips on his tail and fin, so I am worried about the aggression.
treesprite March 15, 2011 Author March 15, 2011 Little clowns are just so incredibly cute that I couldn't imagine anything negative coming out of them.
FearTheTerps March 15, 2011 March 15, 2011 My juvies that I got from Anthony are very peaceful towards each other. They are siblings from the same clutch so I'm sure that has the most to do with it. One is slightly larger then the other, but so far they havent showed any sexing behavior yet.
Glenn March 15, 2011 March 15, 2011 My very-small Picasso's are showing no signs of sexing behavior at all, but my Perc's (one larger than the other) and my Occi's (ditto on size) are starting to nip/chase/hang-out so maybe they'll start claiming some turf for eggs soon :-)
Jon Lazar March 15, 2011 March 15, 2011 Sounds like the typical clownfish dominance rituals, especially if one or both of the clowns are turning sideways and wriggling in front of the other. Dominance has to be established first, then the sex changes can occur. Your fish won't do any lasting harm to each other.
treesprite March 16, 2011 Author March 16, 2011 (edited) At first I thought the one was going into convulsions! Then I realized it was it's way of trying to intimidate the other one. If I hadn't figured it out, I'd have been pretty darn worried! oops.... that was the funniest typo I have ever made.... fixed now Edited March 16, 2011 by treesprite
gmubeach March 16, 2011 March 16, 2011 Yea mine do it all the time they turn wiggle and chase! If you introduce a new clownfish the patern starts all over again (do not do this) anyway glad to see its coming along.
Saltwaterworx March 19, 2011 March 19, 2011 Yeah, I've had clowns by the tank full. Seems totally normal.
