gmubeach March 10, 2011 March 10, 2011 As many of you know I had a problem with grape culerapa in my nano... I have a new breed of feather culerpa(Need proper id) I need to get a picture of this stuff. Its not nearly as invasive as the grape culerapa but its still making me nuts! Its like little feathers... I have cheato in my fuge I noticed a little bit of culerapa pulled it out. I also have some dragons breath I'm going to leave it be. I've also got some slimy stuff thats attacking the feather culerpa, but leaving the corals alone? I've been doing regular water changes and running boyds chemi pure. Going to do one tomorow and pull the feathery stuff:)
gmubeach March 10, 2011 Author March 10, 2011 I wish I had something that would eat it:) small tanks have thier diffuculties!
gmubeach March 10, 2011 Author March 10, 2011 Ok so its not feather culerapa I don't know what it is? Its feathery but not nearly as thick or as stout!
gmubeach March 10, 2011 Author March 10, 2011 Hair algee? No its more of a macro then a hair algee. Its like cheato but has little feathers on the end it pulls rather easily!
gmubeach March 10, 2011 Author March 10, 2011 YES it is bryopsis I had to check I had one strand come in I've started with magensium....and manuel pulling its not terrible at the moment.
El Camaron March 10, 2011 March 10, 2011 raise your magnesium slowly to 1800, you will see the algae start to die off.
dakotasreef March 10, 2011 March 10, 2011 I believe only kent marine tech m magnesium works for bryopsis. I could be wrong. I would do it over a period of like 2 weeks to be safe and make sure you use a good test kit. Maybe someone can chime in who has done this and been successful. Sent from my DROIDX
El Camaron March 10, 2011 March 10, 2011 when i went through this i used Kent MG so i would also reccomend it, do not do any water changes till the MG is up to the desired level, once the bryopsis is gone, bring the MG down with water changes.
GraffitiSpotCorals March 10, 2011 March 10, 2011 Yea the kent stuff worked for me. Just make sure you hold it at the right level for the right amount of time.
Origami March 10, 2011 March 10, 2011 Kent has worked for most people. Other magnesium sources have not had the same track record. I first experienced bryopsis with it came in on a frag that I got from somebody. In my case, I wiped it out with magnesium from Dead Sea Works (a deicer) - aka mag flakes (though I was using the pelleted form, mag pellets).
gmubeach March 11, 2011 Author March 11, 2011 Ok I don't have a whole lot of it I put some magnesium in a syringe and squirt it on the roots of the bryopis. I've also been pulling it so far so good. I don't want this tank to end up like the last one:(
treesprite March 11, 2011 March 11, 2011 I would like to know what the very short, highly dense patches of algae are that I get when I have no tang. I thought that's what bryopisis was, but I guess not. It's not like the long hair algae which is stringy and easy to pull off, it's very difficult to pull off with fingers - the ways I've gotten it gone were to either have a tang or scrub it off with a toothbrush.
dandy7200 March 13, 2011 March 13, 2011 tech m works for me. I baste, just like your saying. Then a day or two later it pulls off at the roots. More of a long term maintenance thing for me then total irradiation. I buy the stuff a few gallons at a time and just attack it when it starts to bother me, usually twice/yr keeps it under control.
gmubeach March 13, 2011 Author March 13, 2011 Thanks for all the info I've never had anything like this. The internet says its very hard to starve this particular macro of nutrients. I just want it gone. So far its been fairly easy to kill.... the weird thing is it out competes the hair algee does anyone know which is worse for the tank?
