mojano anenome

Recommended Posts

SO........I removed the mojano anenomes off my new live rock and while doing so I hit one of them with my bone cutters. I just cut the rock that they were on to get rid of them. Anyways while doing this the things squirted stuff in my face (like a zoa or a mushroom can spit at you) and the liquid got into my right eye. I thought everything was fine but now 5 days later my vision is little burred and my right eye is a little puffy and bloodshot red. I have started to flush with saline solution again. Has anyone else ever had this luck with these things? I know I should have been where glasses.

I have not had that experience, but I would get it checked out right away. I tell my guys at work in regards to eye safety "You can walk on prosthetic legs, and eat with prosthetic teeth, but you can never see with a prosthetic eye."

Keep us posted as you get better so I can stop my worrying.

I would have the eye checked out by a physician to make sure you didn't get any weird infection especially if you are getting discharge or matting of the eye. On the flip side, my allergies has been bothering me the past week and I think allergy season is starting early this year. The fact that you were "fine" for 5 days make it less likely to be an infection...but you never know.

well I don't doubt that my allergies are making this worse.............but I told my bf that if this doesn't get better than after wk and class Monday I will go have it looked at although I bet the doc will just say a what squirted you in the eye???? and prob. be very confused and may not even know what to do LOL. --It does keep stinging off n on the strange thing is it gradually has become more bothersome through the 4-5 day period.

I wouldn't wait. There are a lot of different things that could be introduced to your eye. I would go to the ER if I were you, just to be on the safe side. I haven't heard stories of toxicity in them, but considering the fact that they don't get eaten by anything that I know of, there's gotta be something in them that is toxic or at the very least problematic for your mucous membranes.

I did go to the ER here and the women said that there services are for real LIFETIME emergencies. SO this morning I finally got a DR appt it is at 11am. We will see how it goes. I will post for everyone here even if you all think this is a stupid post.

BTW my eye is def. infected it was swollen and resembles pink eye YUCK! For anyone who actually cares to read this thread.

Thanks for insight fellow wamas members.--Amanda

Honestly, I am very interested in this thread. Just yesterday I kalked one with a syringe in my tank (Only one in the tank, and wanted it gone. came with a frag I got recently). I want to see what the outcome is with the Dr.

Hope you have a quick and safe recovery.

By all means, keep up posted. While most of us know to be careful around reef tanks, some of us aren't as careful as we should be. For instance, I routinely stick my hand in my tank to move stuff around without wearing gloves and I know better. We have a member that poured boiling water on some polys and inhaled the fumes, spent three days in the hospital and was on steroids for a month and I'm sure that he knew better (at least he does now). If it make you feel any better, we've all done dumb things that seemed like a good idea at the time.

I had a metal splinter (and a wood one on a diff occasion in my eye) and ended up in the ER, Washington hospital center has the best reputation for eye doctors and i was told to go there by one. It was a saturday night and nothign was open so waiting the weekend was not an option. I would just tell them you think you got a chemical in your eye and need to see someone.

I cant believe the ER would turn you away something sounds fishy their, make you wait for sure but turn you away just isnt right. Id call up the hospital and ask to speak to someone concerning this, especially since the eye has gotten worse/infected, if you go blind that could be a close to a law suit for them denying you care. (im no lawyer but in the US im sure people have sued for less)

I hope it turns out ok, I keep telling myself to wear safety glasses but its soo hard to remember something so simple. i mean twice i had a splinter and didnt learn, moron i was drilling two holes in a piece of metal the first time and the second time pulling like 6 pieces of interior wall down so i figured 5 min job no need. ill probalby wear them next time.

you probably spoke to a nurse/triage person. surprised an er doc didn't take a peek and schedule you for outpatient evaluation. if this is still bothering you, i would have your primary care doc schedule a visit with an opthamologist.

well, I just got back from the Doc's and I have a chemical burn to the eye from an "unknown" toxin. So, a nice drug cocktail includes; steriods, eye drops, antihistamine (spelling) and anti inflamatory etc. and call in a few days to follow up if there are no improvements then I have to go to a specialist. Good thing is I have a few days bed rest b/c I am having a mild allergic reaction and I can use this time to catch up on my school work. Hopefully I will not need a specialist and this will all be history soon I have a big vacation planned in florida and a small pesty anenome is not going to crash my plans!---

Glad to hear you're on the path to recovery. I keep a pair of safety goggles on my tank room workbench for fragging and doing water tests. I find if they're right there, I'm much more likely to use them.

I am so glad you gave us an update. I'll still be worrying (I tend to do that) until you post the "everything is back to normal". I wonder if it is possible that some of the nematocysts from the anemone stung the cornea?

Please keep us all posted!

I would talk to the administration at that hospital you went to. That's purely irresponsible for an ER to tell you something like that and if you have any damage to your eye that was exacerbated by the fact that you were told it was not an emergency then you have one heck of a case against them... this coming from an attorney who hates how litigious our society is and comes from a family of doctors (I'm talking parents, brother, sister in law, cousins, aunts and uncles, grandparents, probably even some distant cousin's dog, too). Very irresponsible, which ER was it so that I can make sure to never go there?

Unfortunately this is with a lot of ER's these days. As a former EMT for couple of years. I've seen how worse it got as time went on. This is because of many different factors. Some not to blame on ER nurses/Doctors. That's all i'll say on this topic. I consider the best ER's to be INOVA Fairfax and Suburban.

This is what the doctor basically said could have happened. Everything is not back to normal but I can see thankfully, and move my eye. Basically under my top eyelid it is all swollen and the viens very red and exposed. But the white of the eye is starting to clear up. The outside is still puffy today but not as bad. The doc said that the nematocysts could have attached at parts of the eye then they keep attacking everytime I rubbed my eye (which I could not resist). The meds are helping but the steriods make me nervouse a little.

I have never been allergic to poison ivy up until a few months ago and I would have to say that this was like having poison ivy in your eye 10x's fold!Hopefully by the end of the 7 day treatment all will be well and I will not need a specialist.

--But I will keep everyone informed best as I can being a full time student and holding a full time job :).

Not that I want to totally down any ER but for one I was pretty sure you legally can not be turned down medical attention. Which BTW I was from many DR offices around here who will not see patients with my ins anymore or are "no longer accepting new patients" after I explained my issue!

Thankfully even though the family doc I called was no longer seeing new patients like every other one in 703 area code, after hereing my explanation of the problem I was put on hold and the receptionist said come in at 11am. They must be the only office not run by delinquents!
