So my pH is creeping slowly UP. It was a steady 8.01, then 8.2, now it is at 8.5.

I just did a 30 gallon water change this weekend, (before the sump problem).

Reasons for increasing pH?

how are you measuring the ph? I would verify reading first and work from there. Have you calibrated your probe lately?(if your using one) My ph was reading 8.3 or so for a few weeks but my calibrations was off, it was actually closer to 8.0.

I just added a new probe a few weeks ago and calibrated it before I set it up but maybe I will try it again.

Good idea!

To verify your probe is working correctly-just stick it in the calibration fluid (both 7 and 10) and see what it reads. It shouldn't be too much more than .05 off. I have the big bottles of the fluids and I just pour them into shot glasses as needed.

+1 Always check calibration first. I have done some really dumb things because of dirty or uncalibrated probes.

Definitely recalibrate, Laura. I had a probe go bad a few weeks ago. In my case, I noticed the pH measurement was dropping steadily. It dropped below 8, then 7.5, then 7.2 - I'd rejuvenate and recalibrate but the drop would continue. Eventually, it bottomed out at 2.65 - I just had to see how far it would go. Imagine that! Everything in the tank looked fine, though. A replacement probe fixed everything.

Thanks everyone.

I re-calibrated and the pH adjusted to 8.3. Down .2

I am also using a controller and the temp adjustment was set to off, changed it to on.

Wait and see!
