Happyfeet April 18, 2010 April 18, 2010 Saw you purchasing this right after I checked out. Looked amazing in the bag, looks even more amazing in the picture, can't even imagine what it looks like in person!
Jon Lazar April 19, 2010 April 19, 2010 Looks like a nice specimen. You probably already know this, but dendronephthya are non-photsynthetic and you may do better to try feeding it very small foods like golden pearls, fresh hatched baby brine shrimp, or mysid shrimp juice, either in the DT or in a separate feeding container. You may also want to place it in a more shady area to prevent nuisance algae from growing on it, if you have algae in your system. Good luck! Jon
wfoxfox April 20, 2010 Author April 20, 2010 Thanks. I did buy some special food from Sean - rotifers(sp) - I believe. I can give it less light, but I have to be able to see it also :-)
Jan April 20, 2010 April 20, 2010 (edited) Wow, that's just too pretty. Oyster feast and phyto feast are also great foods for filter feeders. I sware by the two. If it gets too big give me a shout and I'll gladly help you out with it. J Thanks. I did buy some special food from Sean - rotifers(sp) - I believe. wfoxfox April 21, 2010 Author April 21, 2010 I moved it to the bottom right of the tank. The Mrs can see it from her chair, but I can't. So I will be re-scaping soon lol Jan, Since you have offered to bring me stuff all over NoVa, you will get the first piece when I grow it out a little :-) Thanks for all the comments guys and gals. Maybe we can start a swap - if it grows fast. Jan and I just love the swapping - lol
Jan April 21, 2010 April 21, 2010 TY! I'll travel all the way to you to get it too. OMG do I love to swap, LOL. I moved it to the bottom right of the tank. If I need to feed it, it would make sense to me that it needs a lot of flow "to bring it food" in the wild :-) What say you guys?
Jan April 21, 2010 April 21, 2010 (edited) GARF says YES to high flow. Read http://www.garf.org/1armci/dendro.shtml http://images.google...%26tbs%3Disch:1 What about flow? ctenophore April 21, 2010 April 21, 2010 I hate to be a pessimist, but you will need to do a lot more than feed it some oyster eggs or phyto a few times a week. I have been wanting/trying to keep these for decade(s) now, and from the research I have done, the only folks having even basic growth success are keeping these corals in dedicated azoox tanks with 24/7 feeding. As in, gallons of concentrated phyto & other foods per week. You may manage to keep it looking reasonably good for 4 or 6 months, and it may even drop a baby or two in that time- but it is living off of energy reserves, and slowly starving. I don't think it's possible to keep them in a mixed reef with today's standard nutrient import/export mechanisms. If you are serious about wanting to keep these most difficult of non-photosynthentic corals, you will need to figure out a way to feed enough food for a tank 10x bigger than what you have, and pull out the resulting nutrient buildup. Look into biopellets, a major-league skimmer, huge water changes, and lots of $$ in food- preferably live. Again sorry to come off sounding pessimistic but I have experience with these guys and have been following others' results closely for many years. Good luck!!

Jan April 21, 2010 April 21, 2010 (edited) As shirley would say..."Be optimistic!..." Oh, and email leroy@garf.org or call 208-344-6163 Sally Jo at GARF. She's great about giving advice and helping out a fellow reefer with difficult corals like these. Edited April 21, 2010 by Jan
Chris- April 21, 2010 April 21, 2010 Might even try to stop all the flow and with a dropper, rain some phyto down on it. Saw your pics. I think you should let me have dibs on that lonely piece on the top, it really looks out of place.
Jan April 21, 2010 April 21, 2010 He'd have to do that several times a day. As far as dibbs go....LOL, I don't think so . Jan April 21, 2010 April 21, 2010 (edited) Interesting and important read for non photsynthetic corals http://glassbox-desi...synthetic-reef/ http://stonyreef.com...hellate-corals/ http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-02/feature/index.php Edited April 21, 2010 by Jan

What do you meen you dont think so? Thats what you women fought for for so long, every man woman an child for themselves. Okay okay, I will stand in line.
Jan April 21, 2010 April 21, 2010 Huh? Oh, not me. I didn't fight for any of it. No feminist here. I like equal rights in some things; man can cook for me, do the wash, iron the clothes and even stay home with the kids while I go out with the girls. I love when a man opens doors for me, holds my coat for me and pays the meal bill . Firemen should be men! Machines were invented by man for mans use. I want no part of them is my view on all of it . I like being a girl . What do you meen you dont think so? Thats what you women fought for for so long, every man woman an child for themselves. Okay okay, I will stand in line.

Looks like it is back to the creek, beating cloths on the rocks for you then, however, when I am doing my load of laundry tonight in my man made washing machine, I will send a thought out to you and toast your independence with a clean glass out of the man made dishwasher. I do need to find time to come check out the fish in my man made car, or, if your in the area with the donkey and cart, you could bring it by on that. And girls are......."okay" . j/k Edited April 21, 2010 by Chris-
Jan April 21, 2010 April 21, 2010 ROFLMAO....Huh, no, no no. You have it all wrong. No washboards, donkeys or any of that non sense for the gals here. We gladly, gleefully and thankfully use as many man made machines as we can get our hands on. Drive? In this weather? That's scary . Definately man's work. Hmm, oh well. Good luck!! not tot argue, but I have propagated them in the past with foods that aren't alive(mostly frozen) by broadcast feeding after lights out and then once the polyps extend, I blast them with small micron food(whether phyto or zoo). wfoxfox April 22, 2010 Author April 22, 2010 Well, I guess I have a challenge ahead of me. I don't think Sean would sell me something that I had no chance to keep alive......... The 'piece off to the side' will be Jan's in a week or 2. :-) Hopefully, she can find something to swap with me - lol

Chris- April 22, 2010 April 22, 2010 Well, if there is an easy way to keep the dendro, that would be good. Hopefully its not too much more to it than feeding my sun polyps, per say.
