Jan March 29, 2010 March 29, 2010 Leave the lights off in your tank for one whole day. Turn them back on a day later and see how beautiful everything looks. Eveything appears rejuvinated. I wonder if that is what happens in the ocean when it rains.
Noobalicious March 29, 2010 March 29, 2010 Jan, did you do that in your 75G or the nano? did you feed like usual?
rocko918 March 29, 2010 March 29, 2010 There is a bunch of people doing a 3 days of darkness. Search some of the other big boards. I have done it and i can't say scientifically it did anything but everything looks good.
darkcirca March 29, 2010 March 29, 2010 I've done the 3 days of darkness and it helped rid my tank of some algae in the past. It was so hard to resist turning on the lights though...
Jan March 29, 2010 Author March 29, 2010 This is the third time i've done this with my 75 gallon. The other 2 times I wasn't so sure of what I was seeing because i'd done water changes just before leaving the lights off. This time I didn't do a water. I don't know why it happens but everything appears brighter, bigger and more full of life. My plate corals, shrooms and LPS especially. My Acans are HUGE. I wonder if it's because they are so dependant on light. I wonder if when they are without light for a day or two they get bigger trying to take in as much as they can to make up for they've missed? Jan, did you do that in your 75G or the nano? did you feed like usual?
Jan March 29, 2010 Author March 29, 2010 (edited) when I first read your response I thought to myself 3 days seems like alot but then I thought monsoon season lasts for months, right? The oceans get very dark and stormy. Flooded with fresh water. I get these same results when my top off acts up and I end up dumping 3/4 of a gallon of RO/DI water into the fuge. A few hours later everything looks puffier, more awake. There is a bunch of people doing a 3 days of darkness. Search some of the other big boards. I have done it and i can't say scientifically it did anything but everything looks good. Edited March 29, 2010 by Jan
Jan March 29, 2010 Author March 29, 2010 Duh, who knows what I was thinking 3 days with out light is fine.
paul b March 30, 2010 March 30, 2010 The corals look better because they were starved for light and need the full polyp extension to make up for the light they were missing. If you put mushrooms in a darker place in the tank, they get larger because they are streching for light. I myself look much better after it has been raining for a few days, but I don't get noticably taller.
Inspector March 30, 2010 March 30, 2010 (edited) Yeh right, why does'nt it work that way when the lights get turned back on at my local watering hole? They or I must not be dosing with the proper chemicals or something. No wait, old light bulbs. Lol!!! Seriously, neat little experiment I'll have to try. Edited March 30, 2010 by Inspector
lhcorals April 3, 2010 April 3, 2010 I left my lights off for two days. I did notice that the Acans seemed to be quite a bit bigger. The SPS and all the other corals did seem brighter in color. Oh yeah and any signs of algae was gone. I might do this once a month for a few months to see if there is any advantages.
zygote2k April 3, 2010 April 3, 2010 I dare you to turn them off for a week. They should look incredible on the 8th day!
lhcorals April 3, 2010 April 3, 2010 I dare you to turn them off for a week. They should look incredible on the 8th day! It was hard enough to leave them off for 2 days. I will let you do the week and LMK how it worked out for you.
