School me on 2 part

Well I was originally thinking I wanted to do kalk but I Just have this overwhelming fear of my ATO malfunctioning and just wrecking my tank, plus I don't want to put my ATO on a timer to where it only comes on at night and I don't think my evaporation is exactly fixed its just ahh... I don't know if I want to go that route just yet.

What do I need to know to get into 2 part? I have some Bionic 2 part that someone gave me but it has just been sitting not getting used. How do I know how much to do, in other words I know nothing about dosing. All help is much appreciated.

Also if I go this route I will probably do it manually everyday, unfortunately with my schedule I'm not available to do such a thing everyday, what about some form of automation?

Thanks

So 2-part is basically the same thing as a calcium reactor but you don't get the lowered pH problem. You're dosing Alk and Ca in balanced amounts in order to replenish what is used by the corals, clams, etc. in your tank. You can find recommendations on how much to dose to start out - either on the B-Ionic bottle or on BRS, 2partcalculator.com, etc. You will need to test daily at first in order to adjust your dosing and keep the levels constant. Once you know how much your tank consumes, you will be able to test less often and will only need to adjust your amounts occasionally. You'll likely want to go with purchasing bulk chemicals and mixing your own 2-part as it is generally cheaper.

As far as automation, peristaltic pumps are the way to go. The common name-brand one is litermeter.

Just so I get this right- If I use two part it adds the calcium and Alk at the same time?

Not at the same time. The two basic components of "two part" separately provide calcium and alkalinity. A third part is often added to the two-part regimen. This third part doses magnesium. Using the three mixes, you're able to supplement each component to match consumption. Long term dosing without adequate and regular water changes can lead to ionic imbalance and changes in salinity (salinity creep), so make sure you perform regular water changes.
