  4. In an recent tour of local fish stores in an effort to restock my crashed tank I have the following to report: 1.) Roozens: Tanks are MUCH cleaner now than before - say a year ago. The stock levels where not as overflowing with impressively diverse fish and inverts as usual. However all in all a positive change. Also an unusually large quanitiy of clean-up hermits, crabs and snails which at times there are strangely unavailable. There was a tank of bamboo sharks, as well as, bizzarely, a terrier sized maine lobster. Lots of small Blue Striped tropical lobsters as well. The usually crazy roozens, just a little toned down and less dirty in the tanks. They also had a garibaldi, which must have been a little warm... 2.) Pristine Aquariums in ALX: 1st time there. Not much stock at the moment. Highlights: A tank of Banggai Cradinals, maxi mini anenomes. Large amounts of turbo snails though not much else cleaner wise. Large frag tank in the center. Nice well managed, conveniently located store, decent dry goods. Great freshwater selection, in particular they had a plethora of oscars, and several tanks of angels. 3.) Congressional Aquariums Rockville: Hadn't been here in ages. Fairly diverse, and quality Salt fish, invert selection. highlights were some nice starfish and urchins, a spiny puffer. Prices a bit high though. Livestock all appeared healthy. Coral selection was not large. Freshwater selection is as good as I have seen, near dc, possibly second only too Superpetz in sheer tank numbers. Nice freshwater planted selection also. Beautiful, well stocked dry goods section. 4.) Aquarium One: Seems to have really stepped up their game into the high-end reef arena. Amongst the selection a Platinum clown, paired picasso clowns, two beautiful cherub angels, lotsa firefish, couple of dwarf lions, seahorses, you get the idea. Impressively beautiful coral specimens in a aisle length frag tank, including $250 acan lords etc. Huge amounts of trochus, turban and mexican turbos. they also carry the new aquacultured LR which was coated in corraline. Coral wise the undisputed champ of the 4 stores.
  5. Hello, I have a 34G Solana and have been running on the same RO unit for about 5 years. I have changed all of the filters except for my RO filter. Well finally my TDS meter says it is time for a new one. Also, anyone have a good way of adding Di to my system? Anyone have a good place to purchase either new filters or a whole new system. Here is a link to my current system: http://www.amazon.com/Reverse-Osmosis-Storage-Removes-Fluoride/dp/B002LHDL7E Thanks, Neal
  6. I have been wondering the same thing. I have an SPS dominated tank and i seem to use a ton of Alk. My tank has been up and running for 4-5 years with the same live rock. My calcium is at 430 to 440 and my Mag is in normal parameters. It has always seemed to me that corals suck in more calcium than Alk. Am I wrong? Thanks, Neal
  7. I have an SPS dominated tank. I currently dose Seachem Reef Calcium Advantage twice a week and Seachem Reef Builder twice a week to keep up with the demand. I hate dosing my tank by hand. There has to be a better way. Calcium: 480 Alk: 10 Mag: 1275 - 1300
  8. Is it really necessary to use a Kalk Reactor? If so, can someone please tell me why? I have a few options for top off tanks that I already own. I will be using a Tom's Aquatic to slowly drip any top-off into my tank. 1-2 drips per second. BRS says to add 1 Teaspoon per Gallon of top-off water. I already use a tom's aqautic aqualift to pump my top-off in my tank very slowly. Option 1: 5.5G open top glass aquarium. After all of the research it seems that an open top somehow messes up the mixture. What if I turn on a power head? Option 2: 2.5G Kent Aqua dose closed container. If I use this as my top off tank should I use some sort of power head inside the container? I have also read that dripping into my skimmer may help out in the absorption. Is this true? Any thoughts on pre-mixing kalk with vineger? Since I have a Solana my stand just isn't big enough to have a reactor. Any help figuring this out would be great.
  9. Sounds like the liter meter is the way to go. Thanks for all of the help
  10. I am also thinkg about the litermeter but my worry is that I won't have enough space in my cabinet. I have a very small cabinet and neet to make sure that everything is going to fit.
  11. Hello All, I am trying to setup a dosing system for my tank. Has anyone tried this setup? If so do you like it? Any downfalls? http://www.marinedepot.com/ESV_B_Ionic_Sup...-FIDPET-vi.html thanks, Neal
  12. Just so I get this right- If I use two part it adds the calcium and Alk at the same time?
  13. Great meeting! Thanks to all of the officers for making it happen. Our local vendors really came out on this one. Thanks Aquatic Obsessions for the great new Vortech. Looking forward to stopping by your store this weekend!
  14. Thanks guys.... I am going to go ahead and get the Phoenix.
  15. Hey Guys, About 2 years ago I moved into a new house and the Mrs. required that I get a new tank. I settled on the Current Solana with a 150W MH (The Hair Dryer Light.) Since I mainly keep SPS I quickly moved up to an IceCap 250 DE MH with an electronic ballast. The setup came with am IceCap 10K bulb. On my old setup I had T5 actinics to supplement my MH. With the new IceCap the Mrs. has asked that I keep a clean looking tank since it is in our living room. Problem: Under the 10K bulb my corals look brown. When I add any type of actinic the corals magically pop with types of blues / greens / purples / oranges. Is there any way to make this happen with just a bulb change? Has anyone made the change and seen a drastic color difference? If so what type of bulb were you using? I am thinking about one of the following: Phoenix 14K XM 20K Ushio 20K Thanks for the advice
  16. Hey Guys, I was wondering if anyone has seen a mantis at an LFS in the last week or so. I have already checked with Roozens and they are out. Any thoughts would be great. Thanks, Neal

    Vortech

Hey John, How is everything going? I really like the new space. Congrats on the move. On the group buy you had joined in and had mentioned that you might be able to get Vortechs. The new vortech MP10 is coming out soon and I was wondering if you might be able to get me one of these? I would rather go through BRK than marinedepot or one of those. Thanks, Neal
  18. Any chance you are going to be getting any nice 250W DE 14 or 15k bulbs in?
  19. Just to add my 2 cents I have had an overstocked nano for 3 years and chemipure elite is the greatest stuff ever. It takes care of everything. Good Luck, welcome to WAMAS
  20. Thanks guys I am finally beginning to get this. It seems like kalk is risky in my top off water. No one seems to make a tiny kalk stirrer that will fit into my stand. I can not seem to figure out how to get the two part Seachem Reef Advantage Calcium and Alkalinity powder into my tank in an easy manner. Is there anything that I can add to my top-off water that might at least help? Perhaps a sold one part product that won't mess up my cubes parameters? Or has anyone devised a simple way of dosing a two part into a smaller system?
  21. Wow, thanks for all of the great advice. I am going to recount what I have heard and put it into my own language to make sure I do not mess it up. I am using a 5G tank as my top-off water. It sits in my cabinet. (Which only has a very small amount of space. ) Currently I am using a MJ1200 as my top-off pump. Using the MJ pump would be a terrible thing because it would add too much kalk at once and create a huge PH spike in my tank. I could get a dosing pump but even then there seems to be some type of material that will collect at the top of the Top-off water that is bad. What if I added a dosing pump and got a MJ1200 to constantly mix the water? Ok, onto two part dosing. What would happen if I added the dosing materials directly to my top off water when I made it. Put a power head and there to mix it around. My 5G tank seems to last between 10-14 days. If I put all of the 2-part that I would need for 8-10 days, so that I do not over-dose the tank, would there be any negative to that? Would I still have to use a dosing pump or can I continue to use my MJ1200? Thanks, Neal
  22. Ok, so I recently changed out my 33G cube with a nice 20G sump to a 34G Solara all in one. It is very nice but I have no idea how to dose kalk into an all in one. I would like to not have to build some kind of crazy extension to the very nice stand and tank. Can someone remind me why I can not add Kalk directly into my top-off water? Thanks for the help and ideas....
  23. Roozens makes me smile every time I walk in the place. Half of the fun is trying to find all of the fish and corals hidden in the back of the tanks. Jos up front constantly changes the price. My trick is to dress down and look I know what I am doing. I do miss larry though he was great at his job. He was always nice asked about your setup and made sure that you were buying the right piece. However I have found that Jos does the same thing when you actually talk to him. This weekend I went in there to pick up a fish or two for my new solara tank and he took the time to help me rummage through all of the crazy tanks finding just the right female wrasse that was reef safe and very peaceful. I was extremely disappointed in the clam tank as well as some of the other tanks. The apatsia was outrageous. However, I have been buying fish there since I got into the hobby over 3 years ago and I have never received a fish with any type of disease at all. Not even once. I can not say that about any other LFS in DC. Hopefully they get that problem under control and bring back Larry.
