One last upgrade - MAYBE - need some suggestions

Recommended Posts

Well it looks like we might upgrade one last time. lol

We are going to get the basement finished soon and the wife wants to get a bigger tank and put it in the basement.

I'm on the fence about it, but might be into it depending on the size and stuff.

We'll probably go with something like a 180g-240g, since I don't want anything in the 300g range just due to monthly costs, let alone initial investment.

I'm also thinking about a 6ft x 3ft x ? custom made, but not sure how much they run.

What do the customs normally run for something like that?

I'm definitely open to suggestions at this point since I really am on the fence about putting one down there and going through all the work, unless it is a really nice setup.

I'd get a 210 long. 7' x 2' x 2'. Hunter (reefhunter) had one and it was pretty slick.

It was cool, that is for sure.

I am definitely going with a 36" wide tank though. After reviewing the MarineLand tanks again - it will either be the 250g or 300g

No reason to go custom since they have these production ones.

I guess I answered my own post - thanks to Steve for reminding me about the Marineland tanks :)

Good luck. When my livestock grow out, I'll be trying to switch to the DD200. That tank would be just perfect. But good luck when you get your 300 in. :)

I have a 240 and it is 8'X2'x2' ,but now that I have it I would love to have a 3' wide tank. I did buy it used and love it. just my 2cents. I have it built into the wall, but my basement design did not alow me to have a room behind it,but it still worked out nice.

I was told there is a guy here on the boards who makes excellent custom acrylic tanks, I don't remember his name though? In your volume range, I would get a quote from him for a tank of 6' x 3' x 20" (225g). I am not the biggest fan of height with our tanks (I hate not being able to reach to the bottom). I also think 6' is a great length, so then I'd go with as much depth as you can in your volume range, 3' would be awesome. Just my suggestion. I'd love to have a tank as I've described here someday as well. (I have a 135g that I'd be upgrading from when that time comes, similar to your 125g in size).

3' deep is the only way to go. If you go less you will end up 'up grading' again before you know it. Even with my down size to a 3' tank, it had to be 3' deep.

I would never go over 2' high.Like Ryan S said 3 foot high tanks are hard to work on and reach the bottom. i love my acrlic tank, but i still like to clean a glass tank with a razor blade, its so easy. I have heard lots of good things about the starfire glass tanks, but I know they are very expensive. maybe get quotes for both.

Just get the 300g. It's a little over 100 for the extra ft. length.

200 Gal. Aquarium - blk - 48"x36"x27" - $1,018.99

250 Gal. Aquarium - blk - 60"x36"x27" - $1,145.99

300 Gal. Aquarium - blk - 72"x36"x27" - $1,272.99

For $127 more, I'd get the 300gal.

Hey Amay where are those prices from? Those are good deals because I was quoted $2300 for the the 300 gallon marinland tank. Please let me know as I am interested in one of these tanks and would like to get one for a good price.

Sikryd- I would say go with the 300 marineland as they are beautiful tanks. :)

Mine is 25" but take out the 1" PVC bottom and the 2" above the waterline and I'm @ 22" of water.

Thanks Guy - if we end up going this route, it will be one of the two - probably the 300g just because the difference isn't that much as far as monthly costs, lighting, ect.

We'll see, I am still debating whether I really want to put one down there or not. It'll be 3-6 months before I do and it is ready to transfer over from this tank.

I want a super clean looking setup - with no fish room, and all that. Just a nice clean looking display tank. So I am still researching to see the best way to go about it.

If I have to do a seperate room, I probably won't do it.

Simple, clean, and enjoyable is what I am looking for. Kind of tough in this hobby though ;)

I know a guy that can make it happen for you,but it seems that you guys butt heads so he would not be your first or 50th choice.but he made me a sweet sump and I did the rest of the under tank set up and it is a very clean looking set-up.it just costed me a arm and a leg and lots of barder work as well.I also went with expensive skimmer and kalk stirrer and reactors, but I'm glad I Did ,and with the help of WAMAS "peeps" helpfull people in the club my tank is expoding with growth!

Thanks for the heads up :)

Khalid,

Wait until they have a 15% off, then you can get an addition $100+ off. :)

That whole NAGA - and Jeff Bean thing (local guy up here that does it on the side) was nothing more than me trying to say there is another guy that can make sumps and does a great work for a great price. Nothing more, nothing less. He made me a sweet sump for $100. I figured I would pass it on.

I'm CHEAP, so I figured I would pass on the info - especially since I read some posts about some people that had some issues. That way they didn't feel like there was no one else around that could do acrylic.

I called NAGA after that, hashed it out, then wanted to see if he could make me a frag tank. He wasn't thrilled to hear from me, but hopefully that is in the past. I never even talked to him before I posted that stuff, so I didn't know him except for what I have read on here, which was good and bad. One day I might pick up a tank from him, if he'll even make one for me ;).

I know where to go when I need something with some quality in it. I know Jeff NAGA does great work, I've seen some of it.

With that being said though - I don't like acrylic displays for saltwater.
