DDiver September 17, 2009 September 17, 2009 (edited) so i bought a torch coral and was trying to glue the bottom of the heads to a piece of branch rock and i accidently sprayed some glue accelerator on one of the heads...i got it back in the tank as quickly as i could then i noticed that most of the tentacles on the head was instantly melting away....i blew off all the slime with a baster, is there anything else i could or should do?...do u think its gonna make it or will the head die completely and possibly kill the other heads that are conjoined to it?.. Jan September 17, 2009 September 17, 2009 Keep it under high flow to help avoid brown jelly. that stuff spreads very fast. so i bought a torch coral and was trying to glue the bottom of the heads to a piece of branch rock and i accidently sprayed some glue accelerator on one of the heads...i got it back in the tank as quickly as i could then i noticed that most of the tentacles on the head was instantly melting away....i blew off all the slime with a baster, is there anything else i could or should do?...do u think its gonna make it or will the head die completely and possibly kill the other heads that are conjoined to it?..
L8 2 RISE September 17, 2009 September 17, 2009 I've done this far too many times with mainly zoa's, but also my frogspawn once. IME, the melting from the actual glue won't spread at all, but they are prone to being taken over by algae in their weak state which is what might take them, so precautions should be taken on that matter. To date, 100% of the time with my zoa's, you couldn't tell what had been done a week later because the zoa's that had gotten glue on them had either melted away, or had grown back, and the rest of the zoa's that didn't get glued were fine. With the frogspawn, the one head disappeared for a while, but apparently still survived and grew back (this was the smallest of three heads).
Sikryd September 17, 2009 September 17, 2009 If it was me, I would cut the one head off. It most likely won't make it and will leave a dead skeleton anyway.
DDiver September 17, 2009 Author September 17, 2009 It wasn't the glue that got it..it was the glue accelerator..like the ones found at BRK..
lanman September 17, 2009 September 17, 2009 I only did that once... accelerator does NOT make corals happy at all No telling what will happen - but keep it under good flow and wait and see. bob
Jan September 17, 2009 September 17, 2009 (edited) Once an LPS gets injured it is suseptable to brown jelly. I've had it happen from one stinging the other. Once they start melting/dying many times they will also get brown jelly. Blowing the stuff off with a trukey baster spreads it. It also just spreads on it's own from water movement. I took the injured coral out and blasted it with water from the tank mixed with lugols. I've had this happen to mushrooms too. I had to cut the dead spots off or just throw the whole thing away. Cutting off the injured section is a good idea. After I treated the coral with lugols i placed it in an area of high flow. It wasn't the glue that got it..it was the glue accelerator..like the ones found at BRK.. Edited September 17, 2009 by Jan
Mountaineer September 17, 2009 September 17, 2009 I think the accelerator is acetone if that is in any way helpful for you. Acetone is an organic solvent if I remember correctly and I can't imagine would be good to have touched the fleshy part of the coral.

You are absolutely correct..in any case it seems like the tentacles that have melted are still there..any chance it will repair itself and be ok?..

Saltwater is the ultimate "healer" - including for us. I don't take anything out of my tank until it is FULLY gone. Even if I cut the head off like I suggested, I would still leave it in the tank to see if it came around. I have had stuff wither away to barely a pencil tip spot, then come back around. Saltwater never ceases to amaze me.

Btw that DM porites is sick Chad...one of my favorites in my tank right now along with the two other pieces I got from him...
