Scolymia, Lobophyllia, Acan Bowerbanki.... or what? It came into Fins and Feathers as a lobo... picked it up for $40. It is pretty small.... like 2" and it opens at night like you wouldn't believe...

Looks good Hunter!!! Im interested to hear the masses on this one

Sean

I will have to take a picture of the bone structure underneath... I have scolymia, cynaria, etc... the tissue looks like a scolymia but the skeleton looks like a dead lobo... so... maybe the scoly grew on a lobo skeleton or maybe the lobo ended up in a round shape and looks like a scolymia... Ill go take more pictures....

Thanks Sean... its awesome!

I think that does look like a scoly coming out of a lobo skeleton it doesn't really look like it's growing ON the skeleton, more on top of. It's playing mind tricks with you :gho:

the first thing I thought when I saw it was Scolymia... but the skeleton threw me off...

That could be its skeleton. Really can't tell from the photo. Maybe it was dying off and grew back or maybe it was glued onto that skeleton. You'd be the best judge.

Indophyllia?

Yeah, I saw that too. The base looks a lot like what you've got.

(edited)

I asked Sean if he knows where it came from.. maybe that will help ID it...

I think I will be going to fins and feathers alot more often...

+1 Nice stuff and cool store

Here is a good reference on Advanced Aquarist from Julian Sprung. Taking a look at the skeletons shown, the edges of the Indophyllia look more rounded over compared to the Scolymia. The Scolymia skeleton looks more funnel shaped with sharper edging. Also, it looks like the ridges on a Cynarina are more pronounce and farther apart too.

I got a Scolymia vitiensis from F&F in the early spring and it has old exposed growth like yours, but the coral is flatter.

Can anything be eliminated due to where it was collected? Does anything stand out as more of a canidate due to where it was collected?
