Firefish

I have been getting conflicting information regarding compatibility of firefishes. One says there should only be one while another says they are a good choice for schooling fishes. Has anyone have, say, 4 fire fishes school in a 100G or larger tank ?

I've got 2 in a 150 gal. I think you would be fine with 4 in a 100 or larger.

I've heard both things as well. My guess is that if a person only has a couple they need to be mated, but groups in a larger tank would be ok. I have an inseparable pair, very cute. A few pairs in a large tank would be really cool.

If u are keeping a school then you should have them in odd numbers not too sure why..that's just what I've always heard..

I've seen a 50 gallon tank with more than 20 and they seemed fine.

I've read somewhere that Firefish will school together while young and as they reach adulthood they will seek out a mate. At that point they will kill any competitors.

 

I personally would just get one or two. There are plenty of other fish to get and why waste all that room on a single species.

 

FYI: they are jumpers, lids are needed.

FWIW: I think a similar thing happens to the Chromis.

My 2 firefish are hooked like a ball n' chain. I hope they are a mated pair.

My personal experience with firefish is that if you add a group together at the same time. They won't bother eachother that much and may even stick together. If you add firefish over time, the established one will be aggressive towards the newer one. If you want a group of firefish add them all at the same time and you'll have a chance at them staying in a group.
